Public vs private universities in Italy: what you are actually paying for

The structural difference

Note that Politecnico di Milano and Politecnico di Torino are public, despite being frequently sold as premium private options. Their tuition is income-assessed like any other public university's.

What the public route actually costs

This is the part that decides most Bangladeshi budgets. Italian public tuition is not a price — it is an assessment, made from your family's declared income and assets through a document called an ISEE parificato. A family with modest, properly documented income routinely lands in the lowest band.

Public students are also eligible for the DSU regional scholarship, run by a different agency in every region — ER-GO in Emilia-Romagna, DiSCo in Lazio, EDISU in Piedmont and so on. Where awarded, it typically bundles a tuition waiver, a cash grant, and priority for subsidised housing and canteen meals. What a private university buys

Sometimes something real:

• Smaller cohorts and closer teaching. A large public faculty can put five hundred students in a lecture; a private business school will not.
• Administration that answers email. This is not a joke. Anyone who has chased an Italian public university office understands what it is worth.
• Placement and industry links in specific fields. Business, economics, finance, fashion and design are where Italian private institutions are genuinely strong and genuinely well-connected.
• English-taught bachelor's provision. Public English-taught bachelor's degrees are much thinner on the ground than master's; private universities have filled part of that gap.

And sometimes nothing at all, at a high price. That is the case to guard against.

The check that matters more than the fee

⚠️ Confirm the institution is accredited by the Italian Ministry of University and Research and that its qualification carries legal value in Italy. Italy distinguishes between degrees with legal value and diplomas issued by institutes that are not accredited universities. A diploma without legal value may still be a useful education, but it is not an Italian degree, and it will not be treated as one by an employer, a regulator or a later university.

Ask the institution directly, in writing, and check that it appears in the ministry's list of accredited universities. If the answer is evasive, that is your answer. The same discipline applies to the offer letter itself — see checking that an offer letter is genuine.

The commission problem, stated plainly

We are a consultancy, so read this knowing our interest. Public Italian universities do not pay agents. Some private institutions do. That is a real structural reason why a student who could pay nothing at a public university is shown a private one instead.

Public tuition is published as a band and assessed on income; private tuition is published as a price. Both are on the institutions' own websites. Look them up yourself before you accept any recommendation, ours included, and ask what any fee above published tuition actually buys.

Who should choose what

Choose a public university if your family's documented income is modest, you want a shot at a DSU scholarship, you are targeting engineering, sciences, economics or architecture, or you want the lowest realistic total cost of any European destination.

Choose a private university if you are targeting business, finance, fashion or design at a specifically strong institution, you can fund the fixed fee without borrowing, you want a small cohort and responsive administration, or the English-taught bachelor's you want simply does not exist in the public system.
