In short: Get admitted → pre-enrol on Universitaly → build the visa file → submit at VFS Dhaka. No blocked account, income-based tuition, and the whole thing runs from Bangladesh. The two things that sink files: skipping or delaying Universitaly, and money that cannot explain itself.
Italy is the most popular European destination for Bangladeshi students for three concrete reasons: public-university tuition is income-based (often EUR 0–4,000 a year), the DSU scholarship can cover living costs, and the entire process — including biometrics — runs from Dhaka. The catch is a sequence of steps that must happen in the right order.
The process at a glance
| Step | What happens | When (September intake) |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Apply to English-taught programmes | December – May |
| 2 | Receive the admission offer | February – June |
| 3 | Pre-enrol on Universitaly | June – July |
| 4 | Build the visa file, book VFS | July – August |
| 5 | Submit + biometrics at VFS Dhaka | August |
| 6 | Decision → flight | August – September |
Universitaly: the step everyone underestimates
Universitaly (universitaly.it) is the Italian government's own portal, and pre-enrolment there is a legal precondition for the visa — the embassy will not take a file without it. After your offer arrives, you create an account, select your university and programme, and the embassy verifies the application online. One rule matters above all: the details on Universitaly and on your visa form must match exactly — name spelling, programme, university. Small mismatches stall files for weeks.
The money: how Italy actually assesses it
Italy does not use a blocked account. You demonstrate capacity for one year — EUR 10,179.85 under the ministerial circular applying from 2026/27, up about 46 percent from the previous EUR 6,947.33 — and the embassy has grown noticeably stricter about traceability:
- Twelve months of sponsor bank statements (parents, grandparents, siblings, uncles and aunts are accepted)
- Documented income behind the balance — salary, business, property
- No sudden large deposits before the application; every large credit needs a paper behind it
The DSU scholarship deserves its own sentence: it is income-based, not merit-based, so a modest family income — properly documented — can win accommodation, meals and a tuition waiver. For many of our students it makes Italy effectively free.
The visa file
- Valid passport (3+ months beyond the visa, two blank pages)
- National visa (Type-D) form and photos
- Universitaly pre-enrolment confirmation
- Admission/offer letter
- Academic certificates and transcripts, translated and legalised
- IELTS or language evidence
- Bank statements, sponsorship papers, solvency evidence
- Proof of accommodation
- Health insurance
- Flight reservation (not a purchased ticket)
Submission and biometrics happen at VFS Global/JVAC in Dhaka; the VFS service charge sits on top of the embassy fee. Decisions take weeks to a few months — which is why starting three to four months before the intake is the minimum safe line, not a comfortable one.
The four mistakes that cost intakes
- 1Late Universitaly pre-enrolment — the intake slips by a year.
- 2Name spellings that differ across documents.
- 3A large last-minute bank deposit with no story behind it.
- 4Skipping translation and legalisation of academic papers.

Common questions
Does Italy require a blocked account like Germany?+
No. Italy asks for proof of financial capacity for one year — EUR 10,179.85 under the circular applying from 2026/27 — shown through bank solvency, not deposited into a blocked account. Sponsors within the close family are accepted, but the embassy verifies the source and history of the funds, so a sudden large deposit shortly before applying is a risk.
Can the whole Italian process be done from Dhaka?+
Yes — this is one of Italy's biggest practical advantages for Bangladeshi students. Admission and Universitaly pre-enrolment happen online, and the visa file, biometrics included, is submitted at VFS/JVAC in Dhaka. No Delhi trip is required.
How cheap is Italian tuition really?+
Public universities charge income-based tuition (calculated through the ISEE mechanism), which for most Bangladeshi families lands between EUR 0 and 4,000 a year — and the regional DSU scholarship can add accommodation and meal support on top of a tuition waiver. It is the lowest credible first-year outlay in Western Europe, which is why Italy is the most popular destination we handle.
What is Universitaly and can I skip it?+
No — pre-enrolment on Universitaly, Italy's government portal, is a legal precondition: the embassy will not accept a visa file without it. You complete it after receiving your admission offer, usually in June or July, and the details you enter must match your visa form exactly — a spelling mismatch can stall the file.
