Sapienza scholarships and DiSCo Lazio: the two routes

Most students find the first and miss the second, which is backwards: DiSCo is the larger and the more predictable of the two, because it is assessed on a formula rather than against a competitive field.

DiSCo Lazio, the one that matters

DiSCo is the successor agency to LazioDisco and covers Sapienza, Tor Vergata and Roma Tre. A full award for a student living away from the family home - which every international student is - normally combines a cash grant, a tuition waiver, a subsidised or free place in a hall, and canteen access.

Three things decide whether you get it:

  1. 1A valid ISEE parificato. No document, no assessment. Start it in the spring; the ISEE guide sets out the Dhaka chain.
  2. 2Meeting the deadline, which falls in the summer. You are applying from Bangladesh, before the visa decision.
  3. 3Meeting the credit condition in later years, or the agency reclaims what it has paid.

Rome's cost of living is EUR 700 to 1,050 a month, so a DiSCo hall place plus canteen access changes the arithmetic more than the cash does. The Rome city guide breaks it down.

Sapienza's own scholarships

Sapienza publishes its own calls for international students, under names that change between cycles - awards for outstanding incoming students have run under the "Wanted the Best" banner among others. The number of places and the value are set fresh in each call, so this is a case where you must read the current document rather than any description of it, including this one.

Alongside those, Sapienza offers two things worth knowing about:

  • Income-assessed tuition. Sapienza publishes a contribution table, and a low assessed income can bring the annual fee down substantially. As everywhere in Italy, filing nothing means the top band.
  • Student collaborations - part-time paid work inside the university, typically a fixed number of hours per year, open to enrolled students. Modest money, properly regulated, and workable without fluent Italian, which ordinary Roman part-time work is not.

The practical problem with Sapienza

It is one of the largest universities in Europe, and it administers like one. Two consequences for an applicant:

⚠️ The Italian-language pages are more complete and more current than the English ones. The English pages are genuine but abridged, and deadlines occasionally appear on the Italian side first. Run the Italian page through a translator rather than trusting that the English version is the whole picture.

⚠️ The deadline that decides your money is DiSCo's, not Sapienza's. Students track the admission calendar carefully and let the regional one pass, because nothing in the admission process reminds them of it.

A realistic funding plan for Rome

RentEUR 400 to 600 a monthHall place, materially lower
FoodEUR 200 to 260 a monthSubsidised canteen
Cash receivedNoneRegional grant per the call

Two more Rome-specific points. First, several UN agencies are headquartered in the city and run English-language internships, which is a realistic target for a master's student in a way that a waiting job is not. Second, ordinary part-time work in Rome requires Italian - see the work rules guide before counting on any income.

Why applications fail

  1. 1Missing the DiSCo window while waiting on the visa.
  2. 2No ISEE parificato, or one for the wrong reference years.
  3. 3Reading only the English pages and missing a deadline published in Italian.
  4. 4Assuming enrolment is automatic after the award - agencies set their own confirmation dates and the award lapses if you miss them.
  5. 5Budgeting on the grant before it is confirmed. Build the plan without it.

Next steps

  1. 1Note DiSCo's deadline from last year's call; the month will not have moved far.
  2. 2Begin the ISEE chain in February or March.
  3. 3Read Sapienza's own scholarship call in full, in Italian, when it appears.
  4. 4Model the year without any award at all using the calculator, and only then decide whether Rome is affordable.

Common questions

What is the difference between a Sapienza scholarship and DiSCo Lazio?+

Sapienza's own calls are decided on academic merit and applied for alongside admission. DiSCo Lazio is the regional right-to-study agency, decided on assessed family income, and its award combines a cash grant, a fee waiver, housing and canteen access. DiSCo is usually the larger and more predictable of the two.

When does DiSCo Lazio close?+

In the summer, which for most Bangladeshi students is before the visa decision. The application is therefore made from Dhaka, using an ISEE parificato prepared months earlier, and there is no later window once it closes.

Are Sapienza's English pages enough to plan from?+

Not entirely. The Italian pages are more complete and more current, and deadlines sometimes appear there first. Translate the Italian page rather than assuming the English version carries everything.

Can I work part-time in Rome to make up the gap?+

Cautiously. Sapienza's own student collaboration scheme is paid, regulated and workable without fluent Italian. Ordinary part-time work in Rome effectively requires Italian, so first-semester earnings should not be part of your budget.
