Two different pots of money
Bologna is where students most often discover, too late, that Italian funding comes in two unrelated forms.
| University study grant | ER-GO regional scholarship | |
|---|---|---|
| Who runs it | Università di Bologna | ER-GO, the Emilia-Romagna welfare agency |
| Decided on | Academic merit | Family income and assets (ISEE) |
| Roughly worth | Around EUR 11,000 gross a year in recent calls, including a tuition waiver | Cash grant plus tuition waiver, hall priority and canteen access |
| Applied for | With the admission application | Separately, on ER-GO's own portal |
| Deadline shape | Winter to spring | Summer, closing late August or September |
| Nationality restricted | Open to international applicants | Open to all enrolled students |
They are assessed by different people against different criteria, and it is entirely normal to win one and not the other. A strong student from a comfortable family is a good candidate for the first and a poor one for the second. The reverse is just as common.
The university study grant
Bologna's own scheme for international students is decided on your academic record and application, not your income. Recent calls have set the award at roughly EUR 11,000 gross per year, which includes a full tuition waiver, for the standard duration of the degree. Treat that figure as indicative: the call republishes the amount, the number of awards and the eligibility rules every year, and the university's own page is the only reliable source.
Three things about it that matter more than the number:
- You apply at admission time. There is generally no separate later window, so a student who applies for the programme and intends to "look at scholarships afterwards" has already missed it.
- The deadline is early. Winter to spring, for a September start - months before ER-GO opens.
- Renewal is conditional on credits. The grant continues only if you meet the progression requirement each year. Fall short and it stops.
ER-GO, and why you want it anyway
ER-GO is Emilia-Romagna's student welfare agency and its award is the one that changes daily life: a cash grant, a tuition waiver, priority for a hall place and access to heavily subsidised canteens. Because it is income-assessed, it needs a valid ISEE parificato, and that document takes six to ten weeks to assemble from Bangladesh.
ER-GO's call closes in late summer - before most students have a visa. You apply from Dhaka. The full regional picture is in which DSU agency covers your university.
Can you hold both?
Assume not, and check. Calls of this kind normally carry a cumulation clause stating what may be combined with what, and university merit grants are frequently declared incompatible with the regional scholarship, or reduced by its value. The clause is in the call, near the end, and it is worth reading before you build a budget on the sum of the two.
What a realistic year looks like
| Item | Self-funded | With ER-GO | With the university grant |
|---|---|---|---|
| Tuition | EUR 0 to 3,000, by ISEE band | Waived | Waived |
| Rent | EUR 350 to 550 a month | Hall place, lower | EUR 350 to 550 a month |
| Food | EUR 180 to 250 a month | Subsidised canteen | EUR 180 to 250 a month |
| Cash received | None | Regional grant | Around EUR 11,000 gross a year |
Living costs are covered in more depth in the Bologna city guide. Note also that Bologna teaches on campuses in Cesena, Forlì, Ravenna and Rimini where rent is materially lower - a decision worth making before the scholarship one.
Why applications fail
- 1Not applying at admission. The university grant has no second window.
- 2No ISEE, which removes ER-GO entirely and pushes tuition to the top band.
- 3A generic motivation statement that could have been sent to any university.
- 4Missing the ER-GO summer deadline while waiting for the visa.
- 5Assuming a scholarship is automatic because the offer letter mentions one. Read what the offer actually awards.
Next steps
- 1Open Bologna's own international scholarship page and note this year's deadline.
- 2Start the ISEE chain in parallel - it serves both the fee band and ER-GO.
- 3Shortlist by campus as well as by programme.
- 4If you want the university grant, put the work into the application itself, because that is the only thing being assessed.

Common questions
How much is the University of Bologna study grant worth?+
Recent calls have set it at around EUR 11,000 gross a year including a full tuition waiver, for the normal duration of the degree. The amount and the number of awards are republished each year, so read the current call rather than any summary.
Is the Bologna study grant the same as the ER-GO scholarship?+
No. The university grant is decided on academic merit and applied for with your admission application in the winter or spring. ER-GO is the regional agency's income-assessed award, applied for separately on its own portal in the summer, and it adds housing and canteen access.
Can I hold both at once?+
Assume not until the call says otherwise. Calls carry a cumulation clause, and university merit grants are often declared incompatible with the regional scholarship or reduced by its value. The clause is in the call and it is worth reading before you budget.
When should I start the ISEE paperwork for Bologna?+
Around February or March for a September start. The chain of certificates, Ministry of Foreign Affairs attestation, Italian Embassy legalisation and translation takes six to ten weeks, and ER-GO closes in late summer while you are still waiting on a visa.
