Halal food, mosques and Bangladeshi community in Europe: the practical side of daily life

These questions appear in no brochure, yet in the first year they affect wellbeing at least as much as tuition does.

Halal food in practice

WhereWhat it is like
Immigrant districts of large citiesHalal butchers, restaurants, groceries — all of it
Large supermarketsCertified halal meat sections are common
Small towns / rural campusesLimited; a monthly trip to a city is the norm
OnlineHalal online shops operate Europe-wide, with frozen delivery

The usual arrangement: students buy meat once or twice a month in a larger city or online and freeze it, and cook day to day with vegetables, fish and eggs. Fish and seafood are widely available and comparatively cheap in Europe, which suits Bengali cooking well.

Learn to read labels

Packaged foods may contain pork fat or gelatine. Ingredient labelling is mandatory and detailed in Europe, so spend some time in the first weeks learning a handful of key words in the local language (gelatine, fat, animal-derived). Learn it once, use it for years.

Mosques and prayer

  • Every large city has mosques, and many universities have multi-faith prayer or quiet rooms
  • Many campuses have a Muslim students' association organising Friday prayer, iftar and support for newcomers
  • In smaller towns congregational prayer is often held in a rented hall or community centre

Contact the university's Muslim students' association on arrival — not only for religious reasons, but because they are usually the first practical help with housing, work and daily life.

Ramadan in Europe

Two things worth knowing in advance:

1. Fasting length varies with latitude. If Ramadan falls in summer, days in Finland, Sweden and Denmark can exceed 20 hours. In southern Europe (Italy, Greece, Malta, Cyprus) the length is closer to Bangladesh. That is a legitimate consideration when choosing a country.

2. Coordinating with exams and work. European universities are generally accommodating — exam timings or work shifts can often be adjusted if you raise it in advance. Raising it afterwards as an excuse does not work.

The Bangladeshi community

Presence is uneven across Europe:

Where it is largerNote
Italy (Rome, Milan, the Veneto)One of Europe's largest Bangladeshi populations
Greece (Athens)Significant presence
Malta, CyprusSmall but growing, student-centred
Nordic citiesSmall but organised; students and professionals
Hungary, BulgariaMainly student-based

A balance worth striking deliberately: the community is invaluable in the first months — housing, work, paperwork, loneliness. But staying only within it means the language never comes, the local network never forms, and job opportunities stay narrow. Students who do both — stay connected to the community and also mix with local classmates and friends — have visibly better experiences. Decide this consciously in your first semester.

Consular services

⚠️ Bangladesh does not have a mission in all nine countries. Passport renewal and consular services often mean travelling to a mission in another country (Italy or Germany, for instance). Find out which mission covers your country before you leave, and make sure your passport has plenty of validity, because renewing abroad takes time.

The part that is also real

The first three months are hard for almost everyone — weather, food, language, isolation. That is normal, not failure. Almost every European university offers free counselling, and using it carries no stigma; local students use it too. If you need to talk to someone, go to the student welfare office.

Common questions

Is halal food available in Europe?+

In essentially every large city — halal butchers, restaurants and certified supermarket sections. In smaller towns it is limited, and students typically buy in a larger city or online once or twice a month and freeze it. Fish and vegetables are cheap and widely available.

How does Ramadan work in the Nordic countries?+

If Ramadan falls in summer, days in Finland, Sweden and Denmark can exceed 20 hours; in southern Europe the length is closer to Bangladesh. Follow local mosque and Muslim student association guidance, and raise exam or shift timings in advance rather than afterwards.

Where is the Bangladeshi community strongest?+

Italy (Rome, Milan, the Veneto) has one of Europe's largest Bangladeshi populations, and Athens has a significant one. Malta, Cyprus and the Nordic cities have smaller but organised communities, mostly students and professionals.
