Where students actually live
San Salvario is the student and nightlife district. Cenisia and Borgo San Paolo sit next to the Politecnico. Aurora and Barriera di Milano are the cheapest — look at the specific street before signing. Crocetta is quiet and expensive. There is one metro line but the tram network is good.
The universities
- Politecnico di Torino — engineering and architecture, with a large English-taught master's list and particular strength in automotive and mechatronics
- Università degli Studi di Torino — humanities, economics, sciences, medicine
Turin is the home of Italy's car industry, and that is the real argument for studying engineering here: internship and thesis-project access to manufacturers and their supply chain is among the best in the country.
Work, honestly
More opportunity than Bologna or Padua, less than Milan. The safest start is the university's own 200-hour student collaboration scheme or EDISU work. Anything outside needs Italian.

Common questions
Turin or Milan for engineering?+
Both are at the top in Italy. Turin's case is cost — rent is EUR 150-250 a month lower — plus better access to automotive and manufacturing internships. Milan's case is the size of the graduate job market. On a tight budget Turin wins clearly.
Who gets an EDISU scholarship?+
EDISU Piemonte awards income-assessed (ISEE) grants that typically combine a cash payment, a tuition waiver and priority for housing and canteens. Thresholds and amounts change annually, so EDISU's own published notice is the only reliable source.
Can I manage in Turin without Italian?+
In class, yes, if the programme is taught in English. Outside it, no — English is less widely used than in Milan, so starting Italian in your first year is the practical choice.
