The Italy type D study visa document checklist

Md. Salahuddin 11 min read Last reviewed: 2026-09-14Visa and embassy

This is the full list, in the order the documents actually have to be produced, with who issues each one in Bangladesh, roughly how long it takes, and the mistake that most often sends it back.

One honest caveat first, and it is not boilerplate. The Italian Embassy in Dhaka and VFS Global publish their own current checklist, and theirs overrides this one. Consular requirements move inside an academic year. Use this page to understand what each document is and to start the slow ones early; use the VFS Global Italy page for Bangladesh and the Embassy of Italy in Dhaka for the definitive list on the day you submit.

1. The validated pre-enrolment, which gates everything

Pre-enrolment for a study visa is made exclusively through Universitaly, the free official portal of the Ministry of University and Research. No other portal, no agency form, no university's own admission system substitutes for it.

Three rules to build your calendar on:

  • Only a validated application can be taken to the consulate. Failure by the institution to validate results in the automatic refusal of the entry visa where the visa application has already been received.
  • Validation is capped. From the 2026/2027 academic year, an institution may validate no more than the number of places it has allocated to international students plus a maximum of 20 percent, after which a monitoring mechanism suspends further validations. Late pre-enrolment can therefore fail for reasons that have nothing to do with the strength of your file. It is a turnstile rather than a locked door — each refused study visa immediately releases one further validation to that institution, and an institution may request extra validations by formal academic resolution — but you cannot plan around somebody else's refusal.
  • Validation does not guarantee a visa. The circular states plainly that the visa decision is the exclusive competence of the diplomatic-consular representation.

If you hold a qualification from the circular's first annex, the pre-enrolment application lets you name one course only, so the choice is a commitment rather than a shortlist. Step-by-step: Universitaly pre-enrolment.

2 and 3. The qualification, and the document that explains it to Italy

For a Bachelor or a single-cycle degree, Italy needs a final secondary qualification obtained after at least twelve years of schooling, which an SSC plus HSC satisfies. Where your own country requires a university entrance test for access, evidence of passing it belongs in the file too.

For a Master or a doctorate, you need a qualification that gives access to the next level at home, with no substantial difference under the Lisbon Convention methodology, plus a transcript of examinations passed and, where available, the detailed syllabus for each subject or a Diploma Supplement.

Either way, the qualification has to be accompanied by one of two things, not both: a CIMEA comparability statement together with an authenticity verification, or a Declaration of Value. Which one is at the individual institution's discretion, so ask the university before you spend anything — Declaration of Value or CIMEA sets out the cost and time difference.

If your result is not out yet, the circular allows a provisional attestation issued by the competent authority of the awarding country. What it does not allow, in express terms, is a self-certification or a letter from a body with no official role in the system. A coaching centre's letter is not a provisional attestation.

4. Language, at B2 across four skills

For a course taught in a language other than Italian, the consulate must verify competence at not less than B2 on the Common European Framework, and may rely only on a suitable certificate from an internationally recognised institution or an equivalent certificate issued by the university itself. In either case it must attest the level in all four skills: listening, reading, speaking and writing.

For a course taught in Italian, each institution runs its own test at a minimum of B2. A recognised Italian language certificate at B2 or above exempts you from that test, and it can be obtained in Bangladesh.

What this does not say is IELTS 6.0. That is a common programme requirement, not a national rule, and our own dataset carries 5.5 as the observed minimum and 6.0 as the typical across Italian programmes — those are our observations of what universities ask, not a legal floor. The trap for a student admitted on a medium-of-instruction letter is in studying in Italy without IELTS.

5. Means of subsistence: EUR 10,179.85, and where it came from

One annual figure, not a monthly one. Italy requires no blocked account — the money is evidenced, not frozen.

The requirements that decide whether the evidence works:

  • The funds must come from lawful and traceable sources.
  • They should preferably be the student's own, or otherwise made available by the family unit, a relative up to the fourth degree. Rotating current accounts or bound accounts in the student's name are preferred where the home country allows them.
  • The consulate is required to establish the origin of the funds and whether they genuinely belong to the student or the family, including by examining the movement of the account and whether the funds are coherent with the income and overall assets of the student and family.
  • Institutional funding counts: Italian bodies of established credit, including universities, local governments, and foreign institutions the Italian mission considers reliable.
  • A scholarship you have applied for does not count. Mere candidacy, or meeting the eligibility conditions for a regional right-to-study grant, cannot be counted toward means of subsistence without an explicit attestation that the grant has been assigned.
  • The money must plausibly last beyond year one. The circular asks for the funds to sit inside a wider assessment of the family's situation, such that it is reasonable to believe they will remain available for the rest of the course.

How to build and evidence the balance: proof of funds for a European student visa.

6. Accommodation, and the trap inside it

The requirement is suitable accommodation in Italian territory. The circular then closes the loophole most students walk into: a mere application for, or eligibility for, a place in a university residence is not a valid document for evidencing accommodation.

So a DSU housing application, or a confirmation that you are in the running for a dormitory bed, does not satisfy this. What satisfies it is a document showing accommodation you actually have — a signed rental contract, a confirmed residence assignment, or a host's hospitality declaration.

7. Health insurance, and the number that is not in the rule

Adequate cover for medical treatment and hospitalisation is required, and the circular names three admitted forms: a consular declaration of entitlement to healthcare arising from an agreement between Italy and your country; a foreign policy valid in Italy with no limitations or exceptions on the tariffs for urgent hospitalisation for its whole duration; or a policy with an Italian insurer accompanied by a declaration from the insurer stating the same absence of limitations.

Note what is not there. The circular sets no EUR 30,000 figure for the study visa. That number belongs to the Schengen short-stay visa and is quoted onto Italian student pages constantly. What the rule actually cares about is whether urgent hospitalisation is covered without exclusions — health insurance for a European student visa explains how to read a policy for that.

The circular also places the insurance obligation at the point of applying for the residence permit after arrival. The consulate may still ask to see it with the visa file, so take it either way.

8. The form, the photograph, the fee and the fingerprints

The national long-stay visa application form, a compliant photograph, and a passport valid comfortably beyond the intended stay. Two current facts worth having:

  • The type D national study visa fee is EUR 50. The EUR 90 adult and EUR 45 child figures you may have read are the Schengen short-stay fees set on 11 June 2024, and are not your visa.
  • Fingerprints have been compulsory for national visas since 11 January 2025, so a biometric appointment is part of the process rather than an occasional extra.

Who does what between the embassy and the outsourced centre is in the Italian Embassy and VFS in Dhaka.

What the visa itself looks like when it comes back

Worth knowing before you plan flights. Where the pre-enrolment was validated without reservation, the mission issues a type D study visa valid for 365 days with multiple entries.

There are exactly two cases in which you may apply against a pre-enrolment validated with a reservation: where you do not yet physically hold your qualification, and where you still have to sit an in-person language test or the admission examinations. In those cases the visa issued has a conventional validity of 100 days, so that you can sit the examinations and, if you pass, enrol without flying home first.

The deadlines that decide your year

Visa applications for the 2026/2027 academic year must reach the competent consulate by 30 November 2026; for 2027/2028 the date is 31 October 2027. Those dates bind only the standard degree courses, which the circular calls corsi ordinamentali: the Laurea, the Laurea Magistrale, and the first- and second-level academic diplomas, including single-cycle courses.

Everything else has no national deadline at all — the Italian professional Master, the Dottorato or PhD, Erasmus, single courses and foundation courses. For those the only rule is that the application cannot come after teaching has started.

Be careful with one word here, because it is a genuine false friend. In Italy a Master is not the Laurea Magistrale. The Laurea Magistrale is the two-year second-cycle degree that most Bangladeshi students mean when they say Master's, and it is bound by the November deadline. The Italian Master is a shorter professional post-graduate qualification, and that one is not. Getting this backwards in the wrong direction costs a student their intake, so check which of the two your offer letter actually names.

The row that matters more than any of them: institutions are expressly allowed to publish their own earlier dates on their own portals, tied to when teaching begins. A student who plans for 30 November can still miss a university's own October cut-off, and no national deadline will save them. If a deadline is extended, the extension serves applications that already arrived on time; it is not a second chance for a late one.

Who this checklist is not for

It is not for EU, EEA or Swiss citizens, who need no study visa at all. It is not for anyone already legally resident in Italy on another permit. It is not the checklist for a short course under ninety days, which is a different visa with different rules. And if your university has told you which of CIMEA or the Declaration of Value it wants, follow the university rather than this page on that row.

Common questions

What documents are required for an Italian student visa from Bangladesh?+

A Universitaly pre-enrolment validated by the university, your final qualification with at least twelve years of schooling accompanied by either a CIMEA statement or a Declaration of Value, a language certificate at B2 covering all four skills, evidence of EUR 10,179.85 for the year from lawful and traceable sources, proof of suitable accommodation in Italy, adequate health insurance, and the national visa form with photograph, passport and the EUR 50 fee. The embassy and VFS publish the definitive current list.

How much is the Italian student visa fee?+

The type D national study visa fee is EUR 50. The EUR 90 adult and EUR 45 child amounts set on 11 June 2024 are the Schengen short-stay type C fees, which apply to tourist and business visas rather than to a degree, and they are frequently quoted on the wrong page.

Does Italy need a blocked account for the student visa?+

No. Italy requires you to evidence EUR 10,179.85 for the year, not to freeze it. The circular prefers rotating current accounts or bound accounts in the student's name where the home country permits them, and it requires the consulate to check that the money comes from lawful and traceable sources belonging to the student, the family unit or a relative up to the fourth degree.

Is a university dormitory application enough to prove accommodation for the Italian visa?+

No, and this is stated explicitly in the circular: a mere application for, or eligibility for, a place in a university residence is not a valid document for evidencing accommodation. You need a document showing accommodation you actually hold, such as a signed rental contract, a confirmed residence assignment or a host's hospitality declaration.

How long is an Italian type D student visa valid for?+

Where the pre-enrolment was validated without reservation, the mission issues a type D study visa valid for 365 days with multiple entries. In the two cases where a reservation is still outstanding, because you do not yet hold your qualification or must sit a language or admission test in person, the visa carries a conventional validity of 100 days so you can sit the examinations and enrol without returning home.
