Fashion design in Europe from Bangladesh: the fees, the portfolio and the jobs

The money, first

This is the field where the fee difference between two apparently similar options is largest, so it belongs at the top.

Over a three-year bachelor's at a private Italian institute, tuition alone is roughly EUR 45,000-84,000, before living costs of EUR 800-1,200 a month in Milan. That is medical-degree money for a degree with no regulated profession behind it and no guaranteed employment. Nobody is going to tell you that in a brochure, so treat it as the central fact of the decision. Model it properly on the cost calculator.

⚠️ The public route at Politecnico di Milano is the one worth real effort. Italian public tuition is assessed on family income, so the low end of that band is genuinely achievable with correctly filed documentation — but places are limited and the admission test and portfolio are the filter.

The portfolio is the application

More than any other subject in this collection, fashion admission is decided on work, not marks. A portfolio for a European fashion programme normally wants:

1. 115-25 pieces, curated rather than everything you have made
2. 2Observational drawing — this is what schools look at first, and where most Bangladeshi portfolios are weakest
3. 3A development process, not just finished images: research, sketches, iterations, failures
4. 4Technical work — pattern cutting, construction, textile experiments
5. 5One personal project that shows a point of view

Start it a full year before the deadline. A portfolio assembled in three weeks reads as one, and it is the single most common reason a strong candidate is rejected.

Where the jobs actually are

Here is the honest structure of the industry, which the word "designer" conceals.

• Designer roles are a very small share of fashion employment, they cluster in a handful of cities, and entry is through internships that are often unpaid or minimally paid.
• Sourcing, merchandising, production management, quality and compliance employ far more people, pay better at entry, and are where a graduate from a garment-producing country has an actual advantage. European buying houses and brands source from Bangladesh; someone who understands both the design brief and a Chattogram factory floor is a rare and valuable profile.
• Textile technology and materials is a separate and more technical route, covered in textile and apparel engineering.
• Fashion business, retail and e-commerce roles are growing and hire on analytics as much as taste.

If your family's connection to the industry is the RMG sector, that is not a reason to avoid fashion — it is the strongest card you hold, and it points at the commercial side of the field rather than the studio.

Language and work

Milan works in Italian for almost everything outside the international institutes. Your course may be in English; your internship interview, your studio and your part-time job will not be. Budget for Italian from day one, and read the part-time work rules before assuming you can earn while studying.

Entry requirements

• HSC or a bachelor's degree, depending on level
• IELTS 5.5-6.5, generally at the lower end of the range for design programmes
• Portfolio, and usually an interview
• For Politecnico di Milano, an admission test in addition to the portfolio
