The portfolio is the application
In design, your transcript is not what decides the outcome — the portfolio is. The most common mistake from Bangladeshi applicants is dumping every class assignment into one file.
What works
- 1Fewer projects, in depth — five or six developed projects beat fifteen shallow ones
- 2Show the process, not just the result — sketches, wrong turns, revisions, final resolution. Reviewers want to see how you think
- 3A problem statement on every project, one or two sentences
- 4Keep hand drawing in — an all-rendered portfolio loses personality

What damages it
- Reference images presented as your own work — grounds for rejection if noticed
- Too much text; a portfolio is looked at, not read
- Huge files or broken links
Your context is your advantage. Dhaka's density, flood-resilient construction, bamboo and earth building, rickshaw art, textile and nakshi kantha motifs read as genuinely new and interesting to European reviewers. Working from your own context is far more effective than imitating a foreign style.

Applying to Italy requires Universitaly pre-enrolment, and architecture frequently adds an entrance exam. Timelines start earlier than other subjects — plan a year ahead.
The licence question
In Europe "architect" is a protected title. Signing off designs for planning approval requires registration with the national chamber or council, which typically needs a qualifying degree of a set length, supervised experience and sometimes a professional exam.
But working in an architecture practice as a designer requires none of that — which is how most international graduates begin. Graphic, product, UX and interior design carry no licensing question at all.
A practical note on UX
The branch of design where European employment is easiest and working in English is most normal is UX/UI and digital product design. Moving there from an architecture or fine-arts background is a natural transition, and demand in the tech-heavy Nordic market is consistent.
