The distinction that decides everything
Students search for "journalism" and mean one of two completely different careers.
| Journalism | Communication and media | |
|---|---|---|
| Working language | The country's own | Often English |
| Typical employer | Newspaper, broadcaster, wire | Company, agency, NGO, platform |
| Hiring basis | Published work and contacts | Portfolio and campaigns |
| English-taught degrees in the nine | Few | Many |
| Realistic for a Bangladeshi graduate | Hard | Yes |
There is no dishonest way to soften the left column. A reporter in Milan reports in Italian; a desk in Copenhagen edits in Danish. English-language newsrooms in Europe exist, but they are few, they are in a handful of cities, and they hire experienced journalists. If your goal is a European newsroom, the language is not a detail you can deal with later — it is the qualification.
The right column is different. Corporate communication, brand and content strategy, social and performance marketing, public relations and internal communication are all done in English inside multinationals, and those employers are in Budapest, Sofia, Valletta, Nicosia, Milan, Copenhagen and Stockholm.
Where it is taught, and what it costs
| Country | English-taught provision | Typical annual tuition |
|---|---|---|
| Italy | Communication, media management, publishing | EUR 0-4,000 public |
| Hungary | Communication and media at several universities | EUR 0-5,000 |
| Bulgaria | Some communication programmes | EUR 3,000-5,000 |
| Cyprus | Communication, journalism, digital media | EUR 3,500-7,000 |
| Malta | Communication, digital media; English-speaking country | EUR 5,000-11,000 |
| Finland | Media and communication, service design | EUR 6,000-13,000 |
| Sweden | Media and communication studies, strong research | EUR 7,000-13,000 |
| Denmark | Media studies, digital communication | EUR 6,000-16,000 |
Add EUR 400-1,200 a month for living, depending on the country and city.
The honest part about the sector
- Newsroom employment across Europe has been shrinking for two decades. Staff jobs are fewer and freelance is normal, including for local graduates.
- Starting salaries in media are among the lowest of any graduate field. If you are financing this with a family loan, look at the numbers in graduate salaries and ROI before you commit.
- Internships in media are often unpaid or barely paid, which is a real cost for an international student who cannot fall back on family in that country.
- The exceptions are the commercial ends: performance marketing, data-driven communication, and anything that touches product or platform work. Those pay properly.
⚠️ Do not choose this field because entry requirements look softer than engineering. The degree is easy to get into and the career is hard to get into; that is the opposite shape of most subjects, and it catches people out.
What actually makes you employable
Nobody in this industry will read your transcript. They will ask what you have made. Build the portfolio while you study, not after:
- 1A published body of work. A blog, a newsletter, a YouTube channel, a podcast — anything with a public archive and a real audience number you can quote.
- 2One technical skill. Video editing, motion graphics, analytics, SEO, or a content management system. This is what separates two otherwise identical applicants.
- 3A second language. English plus the local language moves you from unemployable to shortlisted in most of these markets.
- 4Internships from year one. In this field they are the hiring pipeline, not a formality.
Applying
- IELTS 6.0-6.5; communication programmes often want a 6.0 in writing specifically
- A portfolio or writing sample for many programmes — start assembling it months before the deadline
- A motivation letter that names a medium and a subject, not "I have always loved storytelling". The SOP guide covers the structure.
Before you apply
- 1Write down whether you want to be a journalist or a communicator. Choose the country accordingly — journalism means committing to a language.
- 2Start the portfolio now. Six months of consistent public work is worth more than the degree title.
- 3Shortlist by city, because internships are local: Budapest, Sofia, Valletta and Milan have the most English-speaking communication employers among the nine.
- 4Check funding: Stipendium Hungaricum covers humanities and social science fields.

Common questions
Can I work as a journalist in Europe after an English-taught degree?+
It is very difficult. Journalism is practised in the national language in all nine countries we work with, and the English-language newsrooms that exist hire experienced journalists. If a European newsroom is the goal, learning the language is the qualification, not the degree.
What is the difference between journalism and communication degrees?+
Journalism trains you to report, in a national language, for shrinking newsroom employment. Communication and media management train you for corporate communication, marketing, content strategy and PR, which multinationals across Europe do in English. The second is far more realistic for a Bangladeshi graduate.
Do media programmes need a portfolio?+
Many do, and every employer in the field does. Build a public archive of work while you study — a blog, newsletter, channel or podcast — plus one hard technical skill such as video editing, analytics or SEO. That combination decides hiring far more than the transcript.
Is media a well-paid field in Europe?+
Starting salaries in journalism and general media are among the lowest of any graduate field, and unpaid internships are common. The commercial ends — performance marketing, analytics-driven communication, product content — pay considerably better and are worth targeting deliberately.
