The most common mistake in choosing a country is looking at tuition and salary separately. Taken apart, neither number means anything: the cheapest countries pay least, and the best-paying countries cost most.

Three things that move this table
- 1City, not country. Copenhagen and Aalborg are the same country and roughly double each other on rent. Same for Milan versus southern Italy.
- 2Sharing. The rents above are for a single flat. Sharing cuts 30–50% everywhere, and almost everyone does it for the first two years.
- 3Industry. IT pays roughly twice hospitality in the same country. Choosing the subject moves the outcome more than choosing the country.
The right ROI question
Not "where are salaries highest" but:
Total study cost ÷ realistic annual savings = years to break even.

This does not make the Nordics a bad choice. It shows that a scholarship changes the arithmetic more than a salary does — which is why the scholarship application deserves as much effort as the admission application. See scholarships.
Where the Nordics win
The table above covers the first few years. Over five to ten:
- Salary growth and senior pay are substantially higher
- Permanent residence and citizenship pathways are clear and predictable (details)
- Family reunification, public schooling and healthcare are strong
So the honest conclusion: if the goal is to recover the cost quickly, eastern and southern Europe with a scholarship wins. If the goal is to settle long term, the Nordics win. Decide the goal first, then read the numbers.
The number nobody mentions
It takes on average three to nine months to find a job after graduating, with income at zero and costs continuing. Plan to have at least six months of living costs available when you finish. It is part of the ROI calculation, and almost no agency presentation includes it.

How much do European graduates actually keep?+
Tax and social contributions take 30–40% in the Nordics and 20–30% in southern Europe, and rent takes the next slice. After both, a recent graduate typically has roughly EUR 550–1,700 a month left — a much narrower spread between countries than gross salaries suggest.
Which country pays back the study cost fastest?+
Hungary or Italy with a scholarship, because out-of-pocket costs are lowest. The Nordics pay more but cost more, so breaking even usually takes three to four years — though long-term salary growth and residence pathways are better there.
How long does it take to find a job after graduating?+
