Where students actually live
Portello, next to the campus, is the classic student area. Arcella north of the station is cheaper; Santa Rita and Guizza are the quieter budget options. The city is small and flat, so most students cycle — a second-hand bike costs EUR 50-100 and effectively removes transport from your budget.
The university
Università degli Studi di Padova was founded in 1222 and is one of Italy's strongest research universities, particularly in medicine, engineering, psychology and the natural sciences. Its English-taught master's catalogue keeps growing, and it runs its own scholarships for international students alongside the regional ones.
Work, honestly
A small city means few jobs. The realistic options are university student assistantships, canteen and library work, and seasonal tourism work across the Veneto in summer. Italian is required for most of it — although in a small city you learn faster, precisely because there is less scope to get by in English.

Technically yes, 25-30 minutes by train — but Venice rents are far higher and you add a daily fare, so it usually works out as the more expensive choice, not the cheaper one.
