Our Europe-wide business article answers the question of whether to do an MBA at all. This one answers a narrower one that we get asked in Bengali several times a month: what an MBA in Italy specifically is, why its price bears no relation to the tuition figures on our Italy country page, and whether the person asking should be applying for one.
The short version is that most people asking should not. That is not a reason to skip the page, because the alternative route is usually better and cheaper than the thing they came for.
Three different products share the word "master"
Italian higher education uses the word in ways that do not map onto Bangladeshi usage, and the confusion is expensive rather than academic.
| What it is called in Italy | What it actually is | Who it is built for |
|---|---|---|
| Laurea Magistrale | The second-cycle university degree, normally two years | Graduates continuing in a subject, no work experience assumed |
| Master universitario, first or second level | A shorter postgraduate professional qualification, usually one year | Graduates or working professionals, depending on the level |
| An MBA at a business school | A management programme sold on network and career change | People with real management or professional experience |
The word "master" is a false friend, and it is the single most useful thing on this page. When a Bangladeshi family says master's degree they mean the Laurea Magistrale. In Italy, a Master is the middle row: a professional qualification, not the second-cycle degree. Saying "I am applying for a master's in Italy" therefore describes two different applications with two different sets of rules, and later in this article it turns out to describe two different deadlines.
A Laurea Magistrale in management, economics or finance at an Italian public university is the route that fits a fresh BBA graduate from Dhaka. It is a degree, it is assessed on academic record, and its tuition sits inside the public system. An MBA is a different object with a different buyer, and the fee follows the buyer rather than the teaching cost.
Two fee markets, not one
This is the part that surprises families, so it belongs high on the page.
| Route | What our data carries | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Italian public university, any degree | EUR 0 to 4,000 a year | Assessed on family income, not a price list |
| A master's in management, finance or marketing across Europe | EUR 4,000 to 15,000 | The range our Europe-wide business guide carries |
| An MBA across Europe | EUR 20,000 to 60,000 and above | The range our Europe-wide business guide carries |
The first row is the number on our Italy country page, and it is the reason Italy has a reputation for being affordable. It describes the public university system, where what you pay is calculated from your family's assessed income rather than set as a fee. It has nothing to do with what a business school charges for an MBA, and quoting the two in the same breath is how a family ends up planning for one and paying the other.
If you are going to rely on the public route, the income assessment is the mechanism that decides your actual bill, and for a Bangladeshi family it runs through a document explained in ISEE parificato for Bangladeshi families. Without it, a public university will usually assess you at the top of its band, which is how a family expecting to pay nothing receives an invoice for four thousand euros.
What your work experience actually has to show
If you are genuinely an MBA candidate, this is where a Bangladeshi application is won or lost, and it is a documentation problem more often than an experience problem. Admissions committees are not testing whether you worked. They are testing whether they can verify what you did.
From an employer. A letter on company letterhead, signed, with your exact job title, the start and end dates, your reporting line, and three or four sentences on what you were responsible for. "Worked in the sales department" evidences attendance. "Managed a portfolio of eighteen distributor accounts and two junior executives" evidences management.
From the payroll. Salary statements or bank credits that match the dates in the letter. An experience letter with no financial trace behind it is the single most common weakness we see in files from Bangladesh, and it is also the thing a school can check most easily.
From a family business. This is common and perfectly acceptable, and it needs more paper, not less: the trade licence, the TIN, and a letter that describes your role in the business rather than your relationship to its owner. A committee that cannot tell the difference will assume the weaker reading.
In the motivation letter. Business applications look alike on paper, so the letter carries more weight here than in any other subject. It should name a decision you made, what it cost, and what you would do differently. The structural difference between the documents is set out in SOP, motivation letter and personal statement.
The visa file does not care which one you chose
Whatever the programme is called, the mechanics of getting to Italy are the same, and three of them decide your calendar.
Pre-enrolment on Universitaly. The study-visa route for a student resident abroad runs exclusively through that portal, and it covers university degrees and first- and second-level university master's programmes alike. Before you pay any deposit to a private school, get written confirmation that your specific programme can be pre-enrolled, because the visa file is built out of that pre-enrolment. The mechanics are in Universitaly pre-enrolment step by step.
The validation ceiling. From the 2026/2027 academic year, once you complete a pre-enrolment application the institution may validate no more than the number of places it has allocated to international students plus a maximum of 20 per cent, after which a monitoring mechanism activates and further validations are suspended. It throttles the queue rather than closing it: when a study visa is refused, one further validation immediately becomes available to that institution, and an institution may exceptionally resolve to validate more on reasoned academic grounds. Still, the behaviour it should produce in you is simple — pre-enrol early, because a strong candidate who arrives late waits behind a ceiling rather than behind a queue.
The deadline, which does not apply to every course type. This is where the false friend above costs money, and almost nothing written for Bangladeshi readers gets it right.
| Course type | Bound by the national visa deadline? |
|---|---|
| Laurea, Laurea Magistrale, first- and second-level academic diplomas, single-cycle degrees | Yes — 30 November 2026 for 2026/2027, and 31 October 2027 for 2027/2028 |
| Master universitario, doctorate, Erasmus, single courses, foundation courses | No national deadline — only that the application cannot come after teaching has started |
Most Italian MBAs sit in the second row, either as a Master or as a private business school's own programme, while a Laurea Magistrale in management sits in the first. So the two routes you are choosing between do not share a calendar. Two practical consequences: nobody should tell you that you have missed a November deadline for a programme that has none, and nobody should tell you the management degree is equally flexible, because it is not. Institutions remain free to set their own earlier dates in both rows, and for the flexible row the start of teaching is the hard stop.
And the money is the same money: EUR 10,179.85 evidenced for a year, from lawful and traceable sources, before you fly. Expect the consulate to examine where it came from — account movement tested for consistency against your family's income and assets, which is why a single large deposit made shortly before applying tends to fail. The full first-year picture is in what studying in Italy costs from Bangladesh.
Who should not do this
Say plainly to yourself which of these you are.
You finished a BBA within the last two years. An MBA is the wrong product. You would be paying the premium for a classroom whose value is the experience in it, and contributing none. Apply for a Laurea Magistrale in management, economics, finance or international business at an Italian public university instead, where the income assessment can put the tuition near the bottom of the EUR 0 to 4,000 band and the degree is the recognised second-cycle qualification. Come back to the MBA in six or eight years, when it will do what it is designed to do.
A school will admit you to an MBA with no experience at all. Treat that as information about the school. Programmes that depend on international fee income admit differently from programmes that depend on their alumni outcomes, and you are the one who finds out which kind you joined.
You are counting on the MBA to convert into a work permit. It does not do that by itself, and Italian law excludes time held on a study permit from the five-year route to EU long-term residence. That is a separate and often misrepresented subject.
You are choosing on brand alone. Business school reputation is real and it is concentrated. Outside a small group of schools, the fee buys teaching rather than a network, and the sum that matters is total programme cost against realistic net earnings afterwards — run it with graduate salaries and return on investment in Europe.
Who should
Somebody with five or more years of substantive professional work, a reason for the degree that survives being said out loud, documentation that can be verified, and a target sector in which an Italian network is worth something to them. That is a real person and we have met them. They are simply not the majority of the people who write to us about MBAs.
The wider comparison across all nine countries, including where an MBA is and is not worth its price, stays in business and MBA in Europe.
Last verified 14 September 2026. Tuition, deadlines and the validation ceiling all come from the current ministerial procedure and are reissued with each cycle.

Common questions
Can I do an MBA in Italy straight after a BBA?+
Some schools will admit you, and that is itself the warning. An MBA is priced for the professional experience in the classroom, so a cohort without it costs more and delivers less. The route that fits a recent BBA graduate is a Laurea Magistrale in management, economics or finance at an Italian public university, where tuition is assessed on family income within a range of EUR 0 to 4,000 a year.
Why is an Italian MBA so much more expensive than Italian tuition?+
Because they are two different markets. The EUR 0 to 4,000 figure describes public universities, where the bill is calculated from assessed family income rather than set as a price. Business school MBA fees are set commercially, and the Europe-wide range our business guide carries is EUR 20,000 to 60,000 and above.
How much work experience does an Italian MBA need?+
Each school publishes its own minimum and you should read it rather than trust a general figure. Our Europe-wide guide uses three years as the working floor, and in practice the stronger question is whether your experience can be documented: a signed employer letter with title, dates and responsibilities, matched by payroll or bank evidence, and for a family business the trade licence and TIN alongside a letter describing the role.
Does an MBA in Italy need Universitaly pre-enrolment?+
The study-visa route for a student resident abroad runs exclusively through Universitaly and covers university degrees and first- and second-level university master's programmes. Before paying a deposit to any private school, get written confirmation that your specific programme can be pre-enrolled, because the visa file is built from that pre-enrolment.
When do I have to apply for the visa for an Italian MBA?+
It depends on what the programme legally is, and this catches people out. The national deadline of 30 November 2026 for 2026/2027, or 31 October 2027 for 2027/2028, binds degrees: the Laurea, the Laurea Magistrale, the first- and second-level academic diplomas and single-cycle courses. It does not bind a Master universitario, a doctorate, Erasmus, single courses or foundation courses, where the only rule is that the application cannot come after teaching has started. Most Italian MBAs sit in that second group, while a Laurea Magistrale in management sits in the first.
