Studying engineering in Italy: how admission really works, and what a Politecnico degree costs

In short: Italy has no national engineering entrance exam — each institution sets its own assessment and its own earlier deadline. Public tuition, the two Politecnici included, is an assessment of family income rather than a price: EUR 0-4,000 a year, roughly EUR 150-200 in the lowest band. The language rule is B2 across four skills, not IELTS 6.0, and English runs much deeper at master's level than at bachelor level.

Engineering is the most common subject ambition among Bangladeshi applicants, and Italy is one of the few European countries where that ambition is met by an institution type built for it. But admission works differently from the rest of Europe, and almost every question people ask — which exam, what IELTS, what a Politecnico costs — has an answer specific to Italy. This page covers that Italian layer. What to specialise in and where the jobs are live in our engineering in Europe guide and the per-discipline pages: mechanical, civil, electrical and EEE, chemical, renewable energy, textile and apparel, computer science and IT and architecture.

How engineering admission in Italy actually works

The widely repeated wrong answer is that Italy has one entrance test for engineering the way it has the IMAT for English-taught medicine. It does not. Engineering admission runs through three gates, in this order, and the first one belongs entirely to the individual school.

One: the institution's own entry assessment. Each university and each Politecnico designs its own, publishes its own rounds and sets its own closing dates, so two applications can mean two assessments on two calendars. The admissions page of that specific institution is the only authority on what you sit and when — start there, not on a forum. Ours on each: Politecnico di Milano, Politecnico di Torino, Padua, Bologna and Sapienza.

Two: proof that your qualification is comparable. Italy accepts either a CIMEA statement of comparability or a Declaration of Value from the embassy, and the institution decides which it wants. CIMEA is online and paid and usually takes about a month, which makes it the slowest part of your timeline and the first thing to start. Which one Italy wants is worth reading before you pay for either.

Three: pre-enrolment on Universitaly, the ministry's single free official portal, followed by the national Type-D visa submitted at VFS in Dhaka and decided by the Italian Embassy in Dhaka. There is no trip to Delhi. Two rules new to this circular decide the year: a national visa deadline of 30 November 2026 for academic year 2026/2027, and a cap that lets an institution validate no more than its allocated international places plus a maximum of 20 percent. The cap is on validations, not visas, each refusal immediately frees one further validation, and no per-university allocation is published — which in practice means early is the only strategy. See pre-enrolment step by step, the validation cap and the deadline. Validation does not guarantee a visa; the consulate decides, exclusively.

Politecnico, a general university, or somewhere else in Europe

A Politecnico is not a general university with a strong engineering faculty. It is an institution that does engineering, architecture and design and nothing else, so the labs, the industry links, the career service and the people next to you all point the same way. Italy's two are in Milan and Turin. A general university — Sapienza, Bologna, Padua — puts engineering beside law, medicine and the humanities, which changes the campus and often the city budget.

We do not publish ranking positions, here or anywhere on this site; if a ranking matters to you, open the table you trust and read it yourself. What we can say is what each type suits.

The language answer is different at each level

Italy sets no national IELTS score, and any page saying "Italy requires IELTS 6.0" has invented a national rule. The circular requires each institution to verify at least CEFR B2, and where the course is taught in a foreign language the certification must cover all four skills. IELTS 6.0 is simply what we typically observe programmes asking for, some at 5.5. The language requirement explained and studying in Italy without IELTS cover the alternatives that are genuinely accepted.

The practical consequence for engineering is that the answer changes with the level. At master's level, the English-taught engineering catalogue is deep, and an English-language certificate is usually all the language evidence you need. At bachelor level it is much thinner, and most first-cycle engineering is taught in Italian — which means B2 Italian, across four skills, which is a year or more of work and a completely different project from taking IELTS. If you are applying straight after HSC, check each course's teaching language before you fall in love with it. Either way, learning some Italian before you go is the best use of the months before departure — for the work and the daily life, not for admission.

What it costs, and why the reputation misleads you

A public Italian university does not charge a price. It charges an assessment of your family's income, built through the ISEE parificato from translated and legalised Bangladeshi income and property documents. The band is EUR 0-4,000 a year. A low assessed band can bring a year down to roughly EUR 150-200; filing nothing at all puts you in the top band, commonly EUR 2,500-4,000 — so the most expensive mistake available to you is not filing the paperwork. That applies to the Politecnici exactly as everywhere else, which is why a degree from one of Italy's best-known engineering institutions can cost a fraction of what the name implies. Is university really free in Italy and the ISEE parificato explained go through it properly.

Living costs are the bigger number, and they are never waived. What a month is actually made of:

ItemA monthNote
HousingEUR 150-400A DSU dormitory place can take this close to zero
FoodEUR 120-220University canteens are heavily subsidised
TransportEUR 25-45Student pass
Everything elseEUR 60-130Phone, books, insurance, a life
TotalEUR 450-800Milan is the most expensive of our five cities, Padua among the cheapest

Add roughly BDT 2-4 lakh of Bangladesh-side spending before you fly, none of it refundable. What studying in Italy costs has the full arithmetic, and public versus private matters more here than in most countries, because only the public route is income-assessed.

DSU, and the trap inside it

The scholarship that changes an engineering student's arithmetic is DSU, the regional right-to-study scheme. It is income-based, not merit-based — it does not care that engineering is competitive or that your CGPA is mid-range — and it can carry a tuition waiver, a dormitory place, subsidised meals and an annual grant. It runs region by region, each with its own agency and its own deadline, separate from and often earlier than the admission deadline, which is precisely why people miss it. See the DSU guide and which agency covers your university. Institutions also run their own schemes, for example at Politecnico di Milano.

Here is the trap. A scholarship you have only applied for is not money. The circular states that merely applying for, or being eligible for, a DSU scholarship cannot count toward your means of subsistence without an explicit attestation that it was awarded. So you still evidence EUR 10,179.85 for 2026/2027, from lawful and traceable sources, preferably in your own account, otherwise from the family unit up to a relative of the fourth degree. There is no blocked account. Proof of funds explained.

Your Bangladeshi engineering degree and the Laurea Magistrale

Most Bangladeshi engineering faculties award a four-year bachelor, and that is the good case: four years is roughly 240 ECTS against the at least 180 that most European master's programmes require, so it is accepted almost everywhere. The problem case is a three-year pass degree at roughly 180 ECTS, which evaluators place below honours — the safest fix is a one-year Bangladeshi master's on top before applying. Three-year pass versus four-year honours and CGPA to European grades go through it; as a working rule 3.0/4.0 is a common threshold, 3.5+ is competitive for scholarships, and 2.5-3.0 means choosing programmes carefully. Expect to submit your transcript subject by subject, because a master's in a named engineering specialism is judged on what you actually passed.

One word decides a year here. The Laurea Magistrale is the two-year second-cycle degree, and it is what the national visa deadline binds. An Italian Master universitario is usually a one-year professional qualification — a different thing entirely, with no national deadline. People apply for one believing they applied for the other; the master's guide is the page to read if that is new to you. Holding a polytechnic diploma rather than a degree? Start with the routes that actually exist.

Who should not choose Italy for engineering

Anyone who needs to work through the degree. Italian law allows 20 hours a week, bankable across all 52 weeks up to a hard ceiling of 1,040 hours a year — not full-time in the holidays, whatever you have read. Most student jobs want Italian, and an engineering timetable with labs and studio work is among the least flexible there is. The work rules are clear, and they do not add up to a self-funded degree.

Anyone whose real goal is a graduate job, quickly. Germany's market for engineers is simply larger, and if employment rather than education is the objective, that outweighs everything else on this page. We publish no salary figures for either country, so weigh what is checkable: Germany asks you to lock money into a blocked account, Italy asks you to evidence it. Italy versus Germany and Germany or another European country.

Anyone planning to settle by default. Time on an Italian study permit does not count toward the five-year long-term residence route; you convert to a work or family permit first. The post-study job-seeking permit is not less than 9 and not more than 12 months, and 12 is a ceiling rather than an entitlement. From student to work permit and what is actually true about that promise.

Anyone applying to a bachelor and assuming English. Read the teaching language of the specific course first. And anyone treating a famous name as the plan — the entry assessment does not know the name is famous, and a rejected application to one Politecnico with no second option is a lost year. What Italy is actually good for is the honest summary.

The order to do it in

Start the CIMEA statement or the Declaration of Value first — it is the slowest step. Decide your level and check each course's teaching language. Read each school's own admission rounds, which close months before the visa deadline. In parallel, get the income and property documents for the ISEE parificato translated and legalised; Italy accepts an apostille, in force for Bangladesh since 30 March 2025. Pre-enrol on Universitaly as early as your offer allows, because of the cap. Then evidence EUR 10,179.85 and file at VFS Dhaka well before 30 November 2026. Common questions

Is engineering in Italy taught in English?+

At master's level, widely. At bachelor level, much less. Italy sets no national rule about the teaching language, so each course decides, and what has happened in practice is that the English-taught engineering catalogue is deep at Laurea Magistrale level and thin in the first cycle. If you are applying after HSC, expect most engineering bachelors to be taught in Italian, and treat an English-taught bachelor as something you search for course by course rather than assume.

What IELTS score do I need for engineering in Italy?+

There is no national score. The circular requires institutions to verify at least CEFR B2 in the language the course is taught in, certified across all four skills — listening, reading, speaking and writing. IELTS 6.0 is what we typically observe programmes asking for, and some ask 5.5, but that is a programme's choice and not an Italian rule. Many universities also accept a medium-of-instruction letter, a previous English-taught degree, their own test or an interview.

How much does a Politecnico degree cost?+

Far less than the name suggests, because the two Politecnici are public universities and a public university's tuition in Italy is an assessment of family income, not a price. The published band is EUR 0-4,000 a year, a low assessed band can mean roughly EUR 150-200, and filing no income documents at all puts you in the top band, commonly EUR 2,500-4,000. Living costs of EUR 450-800 a month are the larger number, and Milan is the most expensive of the Italian cities we cover.

Will my four-year Bangladeshi engineering degree be accepted for a master's in Italy?+

Almost certainly. A four-year honours degree is roughly 240 ECTS and most European master's programmes require at least 180, so the four-year BSc that Bangladeshi engineering faculties award is the good case. The problem case is a three-year pass degree at roughly 180 ECTS, which evaluators place below honours; the safest fix there is a one-year Bangladeshi master's on top before you apply.

Is there one entrance exam for engineering in Italy?+

No. Unlike the English-taught medicine route, which admits through the IMAT, engineering has no single national test. Each institution sets its own entry assessment, publishes its own rounds and dates, and decides its own earlier deadline. That means the admissions page of the specific school is the only authority on what you will sit and when, and it is why applying to two Politecnici can mean two separate processes.

Can I get a scholarship for engineering in Italy?+

The one that changes the arithmetic is DSU, the regional right-to-study scheme, and it is income-based rather than merit-based — so it is open to an ordinary engineering applicant rather than only to the top of the class. It can cover tuition, a dormitory place, subsidised meals and an annual grant. It runs region by region, each with its own agency and its own deadline, which is separate from and often earlier than the admission deadline.

Does a DSU award count toward my proof of funds?+

Only once it has actually been awarded in writing. The circular says explicitly that merely applying for, or being eligible for, a regional right-to-study scholarship cannot be counted toward your means of subsistence without an explicit attestation of the award. Plan to evidence EUR 10,179.85 for academic year 2026/2027 without it.

Can I work part-time to pay for an engineering degree in Italy?+

You can work, but you cannot fund the degree that way. Italian law allows 20 hours a week, bankable across all 52 weeks up to a hard annual ceiling of 1,040 hours, and most student jobs still want Italian even when your degree is taught in English. Engineering is also one of the heavier timetables, with labs and studio work that do not move. Treat part-time income as help with the monthly EUR 450-800, not as the plan.

Italy or Germany for engineering?+

Germany's graduate market for engineers is larger, and if a fast job after graduation is the real goal that matters more than anything on this page. What Italy gives you instead is a much lower entry barrier on money: there is no blocked account, you evidence EUR 10,179.85 rather than freezing it, and public tuition is assessed on your family's income. We do not publish salary figures for either country, so compare the two on the things that are checkable.

When is the deadline to apply for engineering in Italy?+

Two different dates, and the earlier one is the one that binds you. The national visa deadline for academic year 2026/2027 is 30 November 2026, and 31 October 2027 for 2027/2028, covering the Laurea and the Laurea Magistrale. Your university publishes its own, earlier, per-course admission dates, and for engineering with an entry assessment those close months before the visa deadline.
