That last row is worth reading correctly. Eurostat counts 883 Bangladeshi students in Italian tertiary education in 2024 — it is a measure of how many people are already there, not of anyone's success rate, and not a figure any consultancy can claim.
Who Italy genuinely suits
The student whose real constraint is the fee, not the effort. Italian public universities do not charge a flat international fee. They set tuition on a bracket tied to declared family income, evidenced through a document called the ISEE. A household income that is ordinary in Dhaka is low by Italian standards, and the bracket follows. Students routinely pay a few hundred euros a year; some pay nothing.
The student who can build a case rather than pass a test. The DSU regional scholarship is need-based, not merit-only, and it covers more than tuition: a hall place, a meal card and a cash stipend. It is not a discount on a fee, it is a different cost structure.
The student who wants a degree with a specialism behind it. Engineering, architecture, industrial and fashion design, economics, and medicine are where Italy is strong, and the reputation is earned rather than marketed. Politecnico di Milano and Politecnico di Torino for engineering and design, Bologna and Padua for breadth, Sapienza in Rome for scale.
The student who wants a landing that is not lonely. Rome, Milan, Bologna, Padua and Turin all have long-established Bangladeshi communities, which changes the first three months more than any brochure feature.

The funds figure is the change most students have not caught up with. For 2026/27 it moved from EUR 6,947.33 to EUR 10,179.85, a rise of about 46 percent in one year. It is evidence of means, not a blocked account — nobody freezes the money — but the consulate looks at where it came from as well as whether it is there. Money that appears in an account three weeks before the appointment is a weaker file than a smaller balance with a two-year history.
The ISEE is what decides which bracket you land in, and for a family whose income is earned in Bangladesh it has to be produced through a process called ISEE parificato, at a CAF office in Italy, using translated and legalised income and property documents from home. It is fiddly, it happens after you arrive, and it is the difference between paying the minimum fee and paying the maximum for every year of the degree. Work and staying on, honestly
Twenty hours a week is legal. Finding those twenty hours without Italian is the hard part, and it stays hard even in Milan, even if your degree is taught entirely in English. Treat first-semester income as zero when you build the budget, and treat anything you do earn as a bonus. The rules themselves are in the part-time work guide.
After graduation you get a 12-month job-seeking residence permit, and long-term EU residence becomes possible after five years of legal residence. That is a reasonable runway — better than Hungary, nowhere near Denmark's three years.
Do not choose Italy if
- 1You need to start earning in your first six months. Without Italian, this is the single most common way an Italian budget breaks.
- 2You are starting late. Public university deadlines often fall eight to ten months before teaching starts, and Universitaly pre-enrolment is a hard gate for the visa — an offer letter without it does not get you an appointment. A student who begins in June for a September start has usually already missed the year.
- 3You cannot evidence EUR 10,179.85 with a traceable history. A sudden deposit is a risk, not a solution.
- 4You are counting on DSU to make the budget work. It is competitive, regional, and the rules differ between regions. Plan the budget as though you will not win it. If you do, that is upside.
- 5You want an English-speaking daily life. You can study in English. You cannot live, rent, or work in English.

Is Italy really the cheapest of the nine countries?+
On tuition, Italy and Greece are the lowest, and Italy can be lower still because public fees are assessed on family income rather than charged at a flat international rate. On total first-year outlay Bulgaria is usually cheaper, because its living costs are EUR 350-500 a month against Italy's EUR 450-800 and its funds requirement is smaller.
What is the single biggest reason a Bangladeshi student loses a year on Italy?+
Missing Universitaly pre-enrolment, or discovering it too late. It is a government portal step that must be completed before the visa appointment, and no offer letter substitutes for it. Public university admission deadlines are also earlier than most students expect, often eight to ten months before classes begin.
Can I count on the DSU scholarship when planning my budget?+
No. DSU is need-based and regional, the rules and amounts differ by region, and it is competitive. Build the budget on tuition plus living costs without it, and treat a DSU award as money you did not have to spend rather than money you were counting on.
