What an Italian student visa really costs from Dhaka, and the number that is not a cost

In short: Three numbers, and only one is a cost. You spend roughly BDT 2-4 lakh applying, and none of it returns if the visa is refused. You evidence EUR 10,179.85, which stays your money — Italy has no blocked account. The degree then costs income-assessed tuition of EUR 0-4,000 a year plus EUR 450-800 a month to live.

"How much does an Italian student visa cost from Dhaka?" is the most-asked money question we get about Italy, and it is nearly always asked as though there were one answer. There are three, they behave completely differently, and confusing them is what makes one family panic about money they were never going to hand over while another arrives at the counter short of the money they actually needed.

The three numbers, side by side

If you remember one thing: row two is not money you spend, and row one is money you can never get back.

1. What you actually spend to apply

The application spend splits into two kinds of line item, and we treat them differently on purpose. Some we can put a dated figure on because we have checked it. The others are set by a body that changes them whenever it likes, and a stale figure reads as authoritative right up to the moment you are standing at the counter with the wrong amount.

The parts we can put a number on

Two notes. Our general Europe-wide breakdown carries IELTS at BDT 20,000-26,000, lower than the figure above, because that band reflects earlier pricing and the paper test that no longer runs here — plan on the current computer-delivered fee. And the BDT 2-4 lakh total is for one country: applying to several countries at once multiplies most of the list, because each embassy wants its own set.

The parts nobody should quote you a figure for

We do not print those figures, and you should be suspicious of any page that does without saying when it checked. Open the Embassy and VFS pages yourself, read today's number, and write it into your own sheet with the date beside it. One line item costs nothing, and it is the one people are most often charged for: pre-enrolment on Universitaly is free. It is the ministry's single official portal, anyone can register on it, and the step-by-step walkthrough is all it takes. Being charged for access to a free government portal is a red flag on its own.

Which costs come before the offer, and which after

This matters for cash flow, because families usually have the money in stages rather than all at once.

Before you have an offer you pay for: English evidence (IELTS, a medium-of-instruction letter or a university's own test — Italy's rule is B2 across four skills, not IELTS 6.0), transcripts, translation and legalisation, and recognition of your qualification through either CIMEA or a Declaration of Value. That last one is the slowest step in the whole Italian timeline, about a month, so it is also the first cheque to write.

After the offer, and only then: Universitaly pre-enrolment (free), health insurance, visa photographs, the visa fee and VFS service charge at the appointment, and finally the ticket. The type D checklist is the assembly order, and what happens after you submit at VFS covers the wait.

The sequencing has a deadline attached. For 2026/2027 the visa application must reach the consulate by 30 November 2026, and by 31 October 2027 for 2027/2028 — binding Laurea, Laurea Magistrale and Diploma accademico courses, while Master, PhD, Erasmus, single-course and foundation applicants have no national deadline. Your university's own date is usually earlier, and usually your real one. The deadline and the 20 percent validation cap explain why late money is as damaging as insufficient money.

2. The EUR 10,179.85 is not a cost

This is where most of the confusion in this market lives. For 2026/2027 you must evidence EUR 10,179.85 as means of subsistence, raised from EUR 6,947.33. You do not pay it to anyone. You do not deposit it with the embassy. You do not lock it away, because Italy has no blocked account — the single biggest structural difference from Germany, and why Italy is reachable for families who could never freeze a sum that size. What the consulate does examine is where the money came from. The circular requires lawful and traceable sources, expressly prefers accounts in the student's own name, and otherwise allows the family unit up to a relative of the fourth degree. The origin must be tested against the family's income and assets, which is why a large deposit landing three weeks before the appointment reads as borrowed rather than available. One trap worth naming: a scholarship you have applied for is not money. The circular says plainly that being eligible for, or having applied to, a regional right-to-study scheme cannot count toward your means of subsistence without an explicit attestation that it was awarded. 3. What the degree itself costs

Italian public tuition is not a price, it is an assessment. The band is EUR 0-4,000 a year, and where you sit inside it is decided by the ISEE parificato, a calculation built from your family's translated and legalised income and property documents. A low assessed band can mean roughly EUR 150-200 for the year in regional tax and stamp duty. Filing nothing puts you in the top band, commonly EUR 2,500-4,000 — students pay the maximum at universities that would have charged them almost nothing, purely by skipping paperwork. Living costs run EUR 450-800 a month:

Which end you land on is mostly a city choice. Milan is the most expensive of the five cities we cover, Bologna and Padua the most budget-friendly — Milan, Bologna and Padua have the month-by-month versions. Part-time work helps here and only here: 20 hours a week, bankable across 52 weeks to a hard ceiling of 1,040 hours a year, which is not the same as full-time in the holidays. Budget the first month after arrival separately — deposits and the permesso di soggiorno kit land before any income does.

None of it comes back if you are refused

Say this to yourself before every payment. The visa fee, the VFS service charge, the CIMEA fee, the Declaration of Value fee, translation, legalisation, courier, IELTS, insurance — a refusal returns none of them, and a second attempt pays most of them again. Italy publishes no processing-time guarantee for national study visas either; EU law sets a maximum of 90 days for a student application, and that clock only starts once the file is complete.

There is one thing a refusal does give back, and it belongs to somebody else: under the new cap, each refusal immediately frees one further pre-enrolment validation at that university. Your money does not come back. Your place in the queue does, for the next applicant. Why one all-in number cannot be right

An agency quoting a single package figure for Italy is quoting its own fee wrapped around fees it does not set, cannot discount and does not refund. The visa fee belongs to Italy, the service charge to VFS Global, the statement of comparability to CIMEA, the Declaration of Value to the embassy, the test fee to IELTS and the premium to an insurer. A package is perfectly legitimate — but ask for it split into their fee and third-party fees, and ask where each third-party figure was read and when. Who should not spend this money

If your family cannot evidence EUR 10,179.85 from sources that can explain themselves on paper, do not start paying for this file yet. The spend is front-loaded and non-refundable, and a file that will fail on funds fails after the BDT 2-4 lakh has gone, not before. The same applies if your plan depends on a scholarship you have not been awarded. And if your real goal is to earn abroad rather than to study, 1,040 hours a year will not fund this and Italy is the wrong door — a student visa is not a work permit is the honest version of that conversation.
