Paying a European visa fee from Dhaka

The fee itself is rarely the problem. The mechanics of paying it from Bangladesh are, and they stop more applications in the last week than any document does.

Two payment models

ModelCountries in our nineWhen you payHow you pay from Dhaka
File lodged in Dhaka, fee at the counterItaly, Malta, Greece, Hungary, CyprusOn the day of the appointmentTaka cash at the visa application centre, plus the centre's own service charge
Application starts online with the immigration authorityFinland, Sweden, DenmarkAt the moment of online submission, before anything is assessedInternational card, in the authority's own currency

The amounts themselves are country by country in student visa fees by European country. This article is about getting the money to move.

The counter route

Bring cash. Card facilities at application centres in Bangladesh are not something to plan on, and a failed card at the counter costs you the appointment slot. Three things to know:

  1. 1The taka amount moves even when the euro fee does not. Missions set the local-currency figure against an exchange rate they revise periodically, so the number on a blog from last season is not the number you will pay. Check the centre's own fee page in the week of your appointment.
  2. 2The visa fee and the service fee are separate. The application centre charges its own service fee on top of the mission's fee, and courier, SMS and photocopying are further optional charges. Budget for all of them in cash.
  3. 3Keep the receipt. It carries the reference number that every tracking tool runs on, and you will need it to collect the passport. See what happens after you submit at VFS.

The card route, and why it fails

Finland, Sweden and Denmark want the fee at submission, online, in their own currency. This is where Bangladeshi applicants lose days.

Your card has to be able to do it. Most taka-denominated cards in Bangladesh have international transactions switched off by default. Enabling them usually means a branch visit or a request through the bank's app, and it is not instant.

The travel quota. Foreign-currency spending on a Bangladeshi card draws on the annual travel quota set in Bangladesh Bank's foreign exchange guidelines — a per-person, per-calendar-year allowance that your bank endorses before the card can be used abroad or online. Ask your bank for the current limit and for the endorsement; the process is routine but it is not the same day.

The alternatives when your own card will not work. A student file opened at an authorised dealer bank against your admission letter can remit tuition and related costs, and some banks will handle the application fee through it — see the student file route and paying application fees from Bangladesh. A relative abroad paying with their own card is common and acceptable to the authorities, which care that the fee was paid, not whose card paid it — but keep the payment confirmation with the applicant's reference on it.

⚠️ Never send a visa fee to an individual's personal bank account, bKash or a "processing agent". Fees go to the mission, to the application centre's counter, or to the authority's own online payment page. Nowhere else. This is the most common shape of the fraud described in fake documents and agency fraud.

The fee you pay is not always the only fee

Countries split the charge differently, and a budget built on one line is short.

  • Visa fee and residence permit fee can be separate. Where you enter on a type D visa and then apply for a permit in country, the permit has its own cost after you arrive — Italy's post-office kit is the clearest example, itemised in the permesso di soggiorno kit explained.
  • Where the permit is decided first, the fee is bigger and earlier. Finland, Sweden and Denmark charge a residence permit application fee at submission, before assessment, which is why a failed card there stops everything.
  • The application centre's service fee is separate from the mission's fee, and courier and SMS are separate again.
  • A family member is a separate fee. Nothing about a spouse's application is bundled with yours.

Keep the payment evidence in your own name

Two situations make this matter. If a mission asks you to prove the fee was paid — usually because a reference did not attach cleanly — a bank or card statement line is far stronger than a screenshot. And if the payment came from a relative abroad, the confirmation must carry your name or your application reference, because the transfer alone proves nothing about which application it was for. Print the confirmation, file it with the receipt, and note the reference number on the front of the file.

Things that surprise people

  • Nothing is refundable. A refusal does not return the fee, and neither does withdrawing. The fee buys an assessment, not an outcome.
  • A second attempt is a second fee. Reapplying after a refusal means paying again, in full, which is worth knowing before you treat the first attempt as a trial run. See reapplying versus appealing.
  • The fee is not the total cost of applying. Add the residence permit or card fee where it is separate, the medical, police clearance, translation and legalisation costs, and the travel to whichever mission handles your country.
  • Pay from an account you can print. If the payment ever has to be evidenced, a statement line in your own or your sponsor's name is far easier than a receipt from someone else's wallet.

A short checklist for the week before

  1. 1Confirm the current fee on the mission's or authority's own page, not from an agent's message.
  2. 2If you are paying online, test the card with a small international transaction first.
  3. 3If you are paying at a counter, withdraw the cash the day before and count it against the published figure plus the service fee.
  4. 4Photograph every receipt and keep the reference number with your file — the physical file itself is covered in assembling the physical visa file.

Common questions

Can I pay a European student visa fee by card in Bangladesh?+

For Finland, Sweden and Denmark you generally must, because the fee is taken online at submission. For Italy, Malta, Greece, Hungary and Cyprus the file is lodged in Dhaka and the fee is paid in taka cash at the counter, along with the centre's own service charge. Bulgaria is the exception in the other direction: the file goes to the embassy in New Delhi, where the fee is set in Indian rupees.

Why does my Bangladeshi card fail on a European immigration website?+

Usually because international e-commerce is switched off on the card by default, or because the travel quota has not been endorsed by your bank. Both are fixed at the bank, and neither is instant, so sort it out before the week you intend to submit.

Is the visa fee refunded if I am refused?+

No. Visa and residence permit fees are non-refundable regardless of outcome, and withdrawing an application does not return them either. A second attempt after a refusal means paying the full fee again.

Can my brother abroad pay the fee with his card?+

Generally yes — the authorities care that the fee was paid against your reference, not whose card paid it. Keep the payment confirmation showing the applicant's name or reference number, and never route a fee through an individual agent's personal account.
