The spending that happens before Europe does
Every cost article on this site starts in Europe. This one does not. Before a single euro of tuition is paid, a Bangladeshi family spends a substantial amount of money in Bangladesh - on tests, documents, stamps, couriers, fees and a flight - and almost none of it is refundable.
Here is the whole list, itemised, for one country.

The two things that double it
A second country. Applying to two destinations rarely costs twice as much, but it is not far off: another attestation set, another translation, another application fee, another visa fee and often another insurance policy. Budget BDT 40,000-1,00,000 per additional country, and considerably more if the second one is decided in Delhi.
A Delhi decision. Bulgaria has no embassy in Bangladesh, and Greek files lodged in Dhaka are decided in New Delhi. Where a personal appearance in India is required, add BDT 40,000-60,000 for travel and a short stay, plus the Indian visa, which needs its own lead time. What is spent versus what is only shown
This is the distinction that saves families the most confusion. Two very different kinds of money are involved in a student visa:

The order that saves money
Sequence matters here more than in almost anything else, because several of these costs are wasted if taken in the wrong order.
- 1Passport first. Everything else carries the passport number, and a name that does not match across documents restarts the whole chain. See getting a Bangladeshi e-passport as a student.
- 2Sit IELTS before applying, not after an offer, because the band decides which countries are open to you.
- 3Attest once, for the right country. Whether an apostille works or the full consular chain applies depends on the destination, and doing the wrong one is a wasted BDT 5,000-15,000. The rule and the country split are in attestation and apostille in Bangladesh.
- 4Translate only what the destination asks for. Translation is charged per document and several countries need fewer than people assume.
- 5Buy the ticket last. After the visa, never before it.
That last point is worth stating as a rule rather than advice: never buy a non-refundable ticket before a visa decision. A refused file with a ticket attached turns a BDT 2 lakh loss into a BDT 3 lakh one.
The agency question
Full-service consultancy fees in the Dhaka market commonly run BDT 2,00,000-2,50,000 for a single country, sometimes with a smaller file-opening charge earlier. Whether that is worth paying is a real question with a real answer on both sides, and we have written it out honestly in the real cost of an agency versus doing it yourself.
What we would say here is narrower: an agency fee is a fifth to a half again on top of everything in the table above, and it belongs in the pre-departure budget rather than being discovered halfway through it.
A worked example
A student applying to one country, filed in Dhaka, with documents from a public university:
- IELTS: BDT 24,000
- E-passport, regular delivery: BDT 5,750
- Transcripts, verification, attestation and translation: BDT 18,000
- Police clearance: BDT 5,000
- Application and visa fees: BDT 15,000
- Courier: BDT 6,000
- Health insurance: BDT 45,000
- One-way ticket: BDT 95,000
That is about BDT 2,13,000, and it assumes nothing goes wrong, no retake, no second country and no Delhi trip. Add any one of those and it moves toward BDT 3 lakh.

How much does it cost to apply to a European university from Bangladesh?+
Roughly BDT 2-4 lakh for a single country before you fly, covering IELTS, passport, transcripts, attestation, translation, police clearance, application and visa fees, insurance, courier and the air ticket. A second country adds BDT 40,000-1,00,000, and a file decided in Delhi adds BDT 40,000-60,000 for travel.
Is any of the pre-departure spending refundable if the visa is refused?+
Almost none of it. Test fees, attestation, translation, courier and visa fees are all consumed whatever the outcome. The two things you can protect are the air ticket, by not buying it until the visa is granted, and tuition, by getting the institution's refund policy for a visa refusal in writing before paying anything.
Is the proof-of-funds money part of this budget?+
No, and keeping them separate is the most useful distinction in this article. Pre-departure spending is money that leaves your account permanently. Proof of funds is money that stays in your account and is only evidenced - none of the nine countries we handle uses a blocked account or takes the money.
What order should I spend in?+
Passport, then IELTS, then attestation for the specific country you have chosen, then applications, then the visa file, and the air ticket last of all. Attesting documents before choosing a country risks paying for the wrong route, since some of the nine accept an apostille and some still require full consular legalisation.
