What studying in Greece costs a Bangladeshi student, including the tuition-first rule

Md. Salahuddin 8 min read Last reviewed: 2026-09-09Money and funding

Greece is under-discussed among Bangladeshi students and the numbers do not explain why. English-taught tuition at Greek public universities is among the lowest in the eurozone, living costs outside Athens are low, and the country is in both the EU and the Schengen area. The catches are procedural rather than financial, and there are three of them.

The first-year total

LineLowHighWhat moves it
Tuition, English-taughtEUR 1,500EUR 4,000Programme and institution
Living, twelve monthsEUR 5,400EUR 8,400Athens against Thessaloniki or Patras
First-year totalEUR 6,900EUR 12,400
Funds to evidenceabout EUR 7,200Legal floor EUR 400 a month; consulates ask EUR 600-700

The funds figure has two versions, and both are real

Greek law sets the minimum means for a student at EUR 400 a month, which is EUR 4,800 for a year. In practice, consulates assessing a Bangladeshi file routinely expect EUR 600 to 700 a month, which is EUR 7,200 to 8,400.

Neither number is wrong. The first is the regulation; the second is how the regulation is being applied. Plan against about EUR 7,200 and treat EUR 4,800 as a floor you should never be near. If someone quotes you the EUR 400 figure as "what Greece requires", they are quoting the law and not the practice, and a file built on it is a weak file.

The tuition-first rule

Greek institutions commonly require a share of the first year's tuition — often a third — to be paid before the visa is decided. That is money committed to an outcome you do not have yet.

Two protections, and take both:

  1. 1Get the refund policy in writing before you transfer, specifically what happens if the visa is refused.
  2. 2Send it through a documented banking channel so the payment is traceable in your own file — see sending tuition from Bangladesh.

The Greek route from Dhaka is two-tier: documents and biometrics are submitted at the visa centre in Dhaka, while the decision is taken elsewhere. The walkthrough, including who decides what, is in study in Greece from Bangladesh and where to submit your visa, Dhaka or Delhi.

And a document warning specific to Greece: Greece objected under Article 12 to Bangladesh's accession to the Apostille Convention. An apostille will not be accepted, and the full consular legalisation chain applies, exactly as for Denmark and Finland.

The English-taught catalogue is new, and small

Greek public universities were only permitted to run fee-paying foreign-language programmes by a law passed in 2022, so the English-taught catalogue is genuinely recent. That has two effects on a budget.

First, the low tuition figure is real precisely because these are public institutions setting a low fee, not private colleges discounting. Second, the choice is narrow: if your subject is not in the small English-taught list, Greece is not a cheap option for you — it is not an option at all. Check the programme exists before you price it, using the university matcher or the institution's own English-language admissions page.

The corollary is that some programmes are only a few intakes old. Ask how long yours has been running and how many students are in the cohort. A new programme is not a bad programme, but a cohort of eight people is a different experience from a cohort of eighty, and neither the fee nor the ranking tells you which you are joining.

Where the number comes down, and the honest ceiling

Greece's scholarship landscape is thin for a self-funded Bangladeshi undergraduate. There is no Greek equivalent of Stipendium Hungaricum, and most of what exists is institutional, small, or aimed at postgraduate research. The realistic picture is in scholarships for studying in Greece, an honest look.

The other thing to be plain about is the exit. Youth unemployment in Greece has historically been high, the graduate job market is weaker than Northern Europe's, and post-study work rights are less clearly defined than in Denmark, Finland or Sweden. Greek is essential for most part-time work outside tourist areas. Greece is an excellent way to obtain an EU-recognised degree cheaply; it is a poor bet if the plan depends on a local job at the end.

What to do next

  1. 1Plan against EUR 600-700 a month of evidenced funds, not the EUR 400 legal floor.
  2. 2Get the tuition refund policy in writing before you send the first instalment.
  3. 3Start the consular legalisation chain early — an apostille will not work for Greece.
  4. 4If cost is what brought you here, compare directly with Greece versus Italy, where Italy's income-assessed tuition can undercut Greece outright.

Common questions

How much does it cost to study in Greece from Bangladesh?+

About EUR 6,900 to 12,400 for a first year: English-taught tuition of EUR 1,500-4,000 plus EUR 450-700 a month to live. Separately, plan on evidencing roughly EUR 7,200 of funds, because although the legal floor is EUR 400 a month, consulates in practice look for EUR 600-700.

Do I have to pay Greek tuition before I get the visa?+

Usually a share of it, commonly a third. Greek institutions often require part of the first year's tuition before the visa is decided, which means committing money to an outcome you do not yet have. Get the refund policy in writing first, and pay through a documented banking channel so the transfer appears in your own file.

Is Greece in the Schengen area?+

Yes. Greece is a member of both the European Union and the Schengen area, so a Greek student residence permit carries Schengen travel rights under the usual limits. That is different from Cyprus, which is in the EU but outside Schengen, and the distinction is worth verifying country by country rather than assuming.

Can I use a Bangladeshi apostille for a Greek student file?+

No. Greece objected under Article 12 to Bangladesh joining the Apostille Convention, so the apostille is not accepted and the full consular legalisation chain still applies, as it does for Denmark and Finland. Italy, Cyprus, Hungary, Malta, Sweden and Bulgaria accept a Bangladeshi apostille.
