Start with the fact that decides it
An HSC is twelve years of schooling, and twelve years of schooling is the standard entry qualification for a bachelor's degree across all nine countries we handle. You do not need a foundation year to be eligible. Where one is offered to a Bangladeshi HSC holder, it is almost always being sold rather than required.
That is the whole article for most readers. What follows is the narrow set of cases where it is genuinely the right purchase, and the checks to run before paying for one.
What it costs when it is not needed
| Direct entry | With a foundation or pathway year | |
|---|---|---|
| Time to graduation | 3 years | 4 years |
| Extra tuition | — | EUR 4,000-12,000 |
| Extra living costs | — | EUR 4,200-14,400 |
| Total added | — | roughly EUR 8,000-20,000 |
| Post-study clock | starts a year earlier | delayed 12 months |
| Extra risk | — | progression may be conditional |
Add the year of earnings you did not have, and the real figure is larger than the fee.
When it is genuinely worth it
1. A subject prerequisite you never studied. An engineering or physical-sciences bachelor's may require mathematics or physics at a level your HSC group did not cover. A preparatory year that fills a stated gap is buying something real.
2. A language you cannot reach in time. If the programme you want is taught in the national language and you need B2, a preparatory language year is the honest route — see English-taught or local-language before assuming you need this.
3. The university itself requires it. Some institutions run their own preparatory year for applicants from particular school systems. If it appears on the university's own admission page as a requirement, it is a requirement.
Notice what all three have in common: the requirement is published by the university, not explained to you by a recruiter.
The four questions to ask before paying
- 1Who awards the final degree? A pathway provider that is not itself a degree-awarding institution is selling you access, not a qualification. Confirm on the awarding university's own website.
- 2Is progression guaranteed or conditional? Almost always conditional — on grades, attendance and a language level. Ask for the exact threshold in writing.
- 3Is the provider on the country's official register? Every one of our nine publishes one. The checks are set out in checking a private university or college.
- 4What permit does the pathway year sit on? A preparatory year is not always a degree programme in immigration terms, which can change your work rights, your renewal, and whether the year counts toward long-term residence.
⚠️ A pathway year taught on a private provider's premises, feeding into a university that has not admitted you yet, is the highest-risk version of this product. If it does not progress you, you have spent a year and a fee for a certificate nobody outside that arrangement recognises.
The cheaper alternatives, in order
- Retake or improve IELTS. If English is the only gap, six to eight weeks and roughly BDT 20,000 to 26,000 solves it. That is the cheapest year you will ever save.
- Apply to a programme that admits you as you are. Requirements vary enormously between programmes in the same country. Widening the shortlist usually beats buying a year.
- A pre-master's or bridging module inside the university, if you are a graduate rather than an HSC holder. It is shorter, cheaper and sits inside the institution that will award your degree.
- Take the extra subject at home. Where the gap is a specific prerequisite, a local course plus a strong statement sometimes closes it. Ask the admissions office directly.
What to do this week
- 1Open the admission page of the exact programme you want and read the entry requirements for an international applicant with twelve years of schooling.
- 2If it does not name a foundation year, you do not need one. Email admissions and get that in writing if you are unsure.
- 3If it does, price the whole four-year plan in the cost calculator before agreeing to anything.
- 4Run the eligibility questions on the assessment to see which programmes already accept your profile as it stands.

Common questions
Do I need a foundation year to study in Europe after HSC?+
Generally no. An HSC is twelve years of schooling, which is the standard entry qualification for a bachelor's degree in all nine countries we handle. A foundation year is only required where the university's own admission page says so, which is uncommon for Bangladeshi HSC holders.
What does a foundation year cost?+
Roughly EUR 8,000 to 20,000 once you add a year of tuition to a year of living costs, plus a year of delayed graduation and earnings. That is why it is worth verifying the requirement on the university's own page before paying a recruiter for one.
Is a pathway programme guaranteed to get me into the university?+
Almost never. Progression is normally conditional on grades, attendance and a language level. Ask for the exact threshold in writing, confirm which institution awards the final degree, and check that the provider appears on the country's official register of recognised institutions.
