Who Sweden genuinely suits
The student heading for research. Swedish universities are research-led in a way that reaches undergraduates: you are taught by people doing the work, assessment rewards independent analysis over reproduction, and the route from a Master's into a doctoral position is well travelled. In Sweden a PhD is a salaried job with a contract, pension contributions and holiday, not a scholarship — which is a different life from a stipend-funded doctorate elsewhere, and is set out in a PhD in Sweden is a job, not a degree.
The student applying to several programmes at once. Everything runs through universityadmissions.se: one application, several programmes ranked in order of preference, one set of documents. It is the least administratively painful application of the nine.
The technology or sustainability applicant. Computer science and artificial intelligence, sustainable engineering, data science and environmental science are genuine Swedish strengths, backed by industry with global names and by universities — KTH, Lund, Uppsala, Chalmers — with deep company links.
The student who wants to live in English. Swedish English proficiency is among the highest in the world, and Master's programmes are taught entirely in English.
What changed on 11 June 2026
Sweden used to be one of the more permissive countries on student work. From 11 June 2026 new rules cap term-time work at 15 hours a week, with limits relaxed over the summer and for university-related work. That is the lowest allowance among the nine — Finland permits 30, Italy, Cyprus, Malta and Denmark 20.
If your plan was built on part-time income, rebuild it on 15 hours. At a realistic student wage that is a contribution to groceries and transport, not a contribution to tuition. This is the honest version, and the country-by-country work comparison has the rest of it.

Because the requirement is monthly and assessed across the length of the permit, a two-year Master's is assessed on the whole period rather than on one year. That is the detail that turns Sweden from expensive into very expensive on the visa file, and it surprises people who compared only the monthly number.

The reputation is real, and so is the housing problem sitting behind it. Student accommodation in Stockholm and Gothenburg is genuinely scarce, the queues are long and are often ordered by how early you registered rather than by need, and an offer of a university place is not an offer of a room.
Register for every housing queue the day your offer arrives, and do not book a flight until you know where you are sleeping. It is a well-known problem and it is very largely solved by acting three months earlier than feels necessary. Costs by city are in the guide to Stockholm.
Do not choose Sweden if
- 1You were relying on a Medium of Instruction certificate. Swedish universities generally do not accept one. Unlike Cyprus, Italy or Bulgaria, you will need a recognised test, normally IELTS 6.5. Leave room for a retake.
- 2You missed the January round. There is one national application and no late route. Missing it costs a full year, not a semester.
- 3Your budget assumed serious part-time earnings. Fifteen hours a week is the new ceiling.
- 4Cost is the deciding factor. Sweden is the second most expensive of the nine on tuition, on living costs and on the funds file.
- 5You want the longest possible stay-back. Twelve months is respectable but Denmark grants three years and Finland two.

How many hours can a student work in Sweden now?+
From 11 June 2026 term-time work is capped at 15 hours a week, with limits relaxed over the summer and for work connected to the university. That is lower than every other destination on this list, so any budget written before that change needs rebuilding.
Will a Swedish university accept a Medium of Instruction certificate instead of IELTS?+
Generally no. Swedish institutions typically require a recognised English test such as IELTS 6.5 or an accepted equivalent. This is one of the clearest differences between Sweden and destinations such as Cyprus, Bulgaria and much of Italy, where an MOI certificate is often enough.
Why does the Swedish funds requirement feel higher than the monthly figure suggests?+
Because it is assessed for each month of the permit rather than for one academic year.
