The three-year permit is the headline, and it is real

Denmark grants graduates a three-year job-search period, and it is issued together with the study permit rather than applied for separately at the end. Sweden gives twelve months, applied for after you graduate.

Three years is long enough to learn functional Danish, complete an internship, take a job that is not quite the right one, and still be in the country when the right one appears. Twelve months is not. If your plan involves staying in Europe after the degree, this is the single largest difference between the two countries and it should carry more weight than a tuition figure.

What Denmark charges you for it

More money, up front. The funds requirement runs at DKK 7,426 a month, capped at DKK 89,112 for a year, roughly EUR 11,920 — the highest of the nine countries we cover. Denmark's tuition band also runs higher at the top end, EUR 6,000-16,000, and scholarships for non-EU students are genuinely scarce. Danish universities do offer some tuition reductions and there are a small number of government-funded scholarships, but there is nothing in Denmark comparable in scale to Italy's DSU or Hungary's Stipendium Hungaricum.

⚠️ Do not treat Denmark as a scholarship destination. It is a self-funded destination with an unusually good exit. Read the honest look at Danish scholarships before you plan around one.

What Sweden does better

Risk-spreading. One application through universityadmissions.se, one SEK 900 fee, four ranked programme choices at different universities. Denmark requires a separate application, and often a separate fee, to each institution. If you are applying with a profile you are unsure about, Sweden's structure is far kinder.

Breadth of English-taught master's programmes. Both countries teach heavily in English at master's level, but Sweden's catalogue is larger and spread across more institutions.

A slightly lower funds bar. SEK 10,656 a month is real money, but it is below Denmark's requirement, and the gap matters when you are assembling a bank statement.

The part both countries share

Neither is cheap, neither has abundant student housing, and in both the local language governs the ordinary job market even though the classroom runs in English. Swedish and Danish are learnable and both countries subsidise language courses, but nobody should arrive assuming part-time earnings will fill a budget hole in the first semester. Sweden's new 15-hour cap makes that even more true there.

Both are also excellent on the things that do not appear in a comparison table: public healthcare, safety, transport, and universities that expect you to argue rather than memorise.

Who should choose what

Choose Denmark if you can genuinely fund it and your goal is to work in Europe afterwards. The three-year permit is worth paying for, and it removes the single biggest source of post-graduation panic.

Choose Sweden if your profile is uncertain and you want four ranked shots in one application, you want the wider master's catalogue, or the funds gap between the two is the thing standing in your way.

Choose neither if you are hoping a scholarship will appear. Both are self-funded destinations for most non-EU students. If your budget is the constraint, Italy, Hungary, Greece and Bulgaria are the honest answers — start with the tight-budget comparison.

Next steps

  1. 1Confirm the current funds figures with Migrationsverket and SIRI; both move each year.
  2. 2If Denmark is your choice, book your VFS appointment in Gulshan early — the queue lengthens through the summer.
  3. 3Read the three-country Nordic overview so Finland is in the picture too, then run all three through the comparison tool.

Common questions

How long can I stay after graduating in Denmark and Sweden?+

Denmark grants a three-year job-search period, issued together with the study permit rather than applied for separately at the end. Sweden grants twelve months, applied for after graduation. For anyone planning to work in Europe afterwards, that is the biggest single difference between the two.

Which country asks for more money at the visa stage?+

Denmark. It requires DKK 7,426 a month up to DKK 89,112 for a year, about EUR 11,920 at the 2026 level, which is the highest of the nine countries we cover. Sweden requires SEK 10,656 a month. Neither requires a blocked account.

Are there scholarships for Bangladeshi students in Denmark?+

Very few, and none at the scale of Italy's DSU or Hungary's Stipendium Hungaricum. Danish universities offer some tuition reductions and there is a small number of government-funded awards, but Denmark should be planned as a self-funded destination with an unusually good post-study permit, not as a scholarship destination.
