Master's versus doctorate in Sweden: not the same process at all

If you take one thing from this article: do not go looking for a Swedish PhD in the admissions portal. It is not there. You look on the university's vacancies page, the way you would look for any other job.

Why it works this way

Swedish law sets it up deliberately. The Higher Education Ordinance provides that institutions may establish specific posts for third-cycle students so they can complete their studies — the doctoral studentship. It caps the arrangement: a person may hold a doctoral studentship for no more than eight years in total, and the total employment may be no longer than the equivalent of four years of full-time third-cycle study.

The Ordinance also protects students the other way round. A doctoral student on grant-based financing must, on application, be appointed to a doctoral studentship no later than the point at which three years of full-time study remain before the doctorate. In other words, the system is designed so that nobody spends the back half of a Swedish PhD unpaid.

The consequence for an applicant abroad is blunt: because financing must be assured, there is no route where you offer to pay your own way and are admitted for it. No place is created for a self-funded student. You are competing for a funded post or you are not going.

The money, as of 2026

Each university publishes its own doctoral salary ladder, tied to progress through the degree rather than negotiated individually. Starting salaries in 2026 sit broadly in the region of SEK 31,000-38,000 a month gross before tax, rising in steps as you pass the degree's checkpoints, with pension and standard Swedish employment benefits on top.

Treat that range as an orientation, not a quotation. The authoritative number is the one in the advert for the specific position, and every advert states it. Sweden also taxes that salary at normal Swedish rates, so the take-home is well below the gross — build your budget on net, and use the cost calculator for living costs in the city concerned.

Teaching, and why four years becomes five

Many doctoral posts include departmental duties — teaching, lab supervision, administration — usually up to 20 per cent of full time. Where they do, the employment is extended proportionally, so a four-year degree runs to about five calendar years. This is normal, it is paid, and it is genuinely useful if you want an academic career afterwards.

The permit, which changed in June 2026

Sweden reformed its rules for researchers and doctoral students with effect from 11 June 2026. The practical points:

• Doctoral students with a hosting agreement can now apply for a residence permit for research, the same permit as other researchers, rather than a study permit.
• The post-study job-search permit is now 12 to 18 months rather than a fixed 12.
• Permanent residence can follow three consecutive years on a research or doctoral permit, rather than the longer path that applied before.
• Family members can apply independently for a permit linked to research or doctoral study.

The Swedish Migration Agency's own guide asks a short series of questions and tells you which permit your situation needs. Use it rather than guessing — getting the permit category wrong at the start is expensive to fix.

How to actually get one

1. 1Have a research master's with a thesis. A taught master's with no research component is a weak application for a Swedish PhD.
2. 2Find the position, not the university. Search the vacancy pages of the institutions in your field. Positions appear year-round and each has its own deadline.
3. 3Read the project description properly. Most Swedish posts are attached to a funded project with a defined topic. Fit matters more than general excellence.
4. 4Contact the supervisor before applying, briefly and specifically, referencing their actual work. This is expected, not pushy.
5. 5Write to the advert. Swedish selection panels score against the stated criteria. Address them in order.

What the salary does not stretch to

A doctoral salary is a real income, but it is an entry-level Swedish one taxed at Swedish rates, and Stockholm, Gothenburg and Lund are expensive cities. It supports one person comfortably and a family only with care — bringing a spouse and children raises the housing requirement sharply, and a partner's right to work is a separate question to check with the Migration Agency rather than assume. Budget on the net figure for the city concerned, not the gross in the advert.
