Study in Sweden from Bangladesh: the January deadline, the money, and the new work rules

In short: One national portal, one mid-January deadline, one SEK 1,500 permit fee, funds of SEK 10,656 per month in your own name — and from 11 June 2026, a 15-hour weekly work cap on new permits. Sweden rewards planners and punishes latecomers more than any destination we cover except Finland.

Sweden offers research-grade education, a society that runs comfortably in English, and one of Europe's most orderly application systems. The price of that orderliness is a calendar that does not bend.

The timeline, working backwards from a September start

One application, four programmes

Every Swedish university admits through the same portal — you rank up to four programmes in order of preference. The document rules are precise (some countries' transcripts are verified directly with institutions), and applications that ignore the upload instructions are simply not assessed. Read the country-specific instructions before uploading anything.

Scholarships: the flagship is the SI Scholarship for Global Professionals — tuition, living costs and insurance for master's students — applied for in February, right after the admission application. Many universities run their own tuition waivers on similar winter deadlines.

The permit: fee, funds, family

After admission and the first tuition instalment, apply online to Migrationsverket:

• Fee: SEK 1,500, paid by card, not refunded on refusal.
• Funds: SEK 10,656 per month (2026 level) for every month of the permit — about SEK 106,560 for a ten-month academic year. The krona figure adjusts yearly; check the current amount before applying.
• Your own bank statements carry more weight than sponsor arrangements — a clean six-month history beats a large recent transfer here as everywhere.
• Bringing family? A spouse adds SEK 4,440 per month, each child SEK 2,664, and family members can apply together with you or afterwards.

Biometrics are given in person at a Swedish embassy or consulate. Sweden maintains a presence in Dhaka, but which services run locally versus regionally does change — check the mission's current instructions before booking anything.

The 2026 work-rule change, plainly

Sweden's old advantage — no formal cap on student work hours — is gone for new permits: granted on or after 11 June 2026, the cap is 15 hours per week, with exceptions only for work that is part of your education (internships) or student representation and research at your own institution. Plenty of older blogs and videos still repeat the old rule. Build your budget on the new one, and treat part-time income as a bonus, never as the plan.

What goes wrong
