What Swedish tuition actually costs

Sweden is free for EU citizens and charges everyone else. The fee depends on the subject, not the university, and the spread is wide:

Roughly, SEK 100,000 is in the region of EUR 9,000. Each university publishes the exact fee per programme; those ranges are for planning, not for quoting.

What a waiver is, and is not

Almost every Swedish university runs its own tuition fee waiver scheme for non-EU applicants. The tiers are usually 25, 50, 75 or 100 percent of the tuition fee, awarded on academic merit from the admission application, sometimes with a short additional motivation statement.

⚠️ A waiver covers tuition and nothing else. No rent, no food, no insurance, no travel. This is the single most misread thing about studying in Sweden, and it is misread in a specific and expensive way: a student receives a 100 percent waiver, calls it a full scholarship, and then discovers at residence-permit stage that the Migration Agency wants to see a year of living money in a bank account regardless.

The maintenance requirement, which the waiver does not touch

The Swedish Migration Agency requires a student to show a set amount per month for the period of study - recently in the region of SEK 10,000 to 11,000 a month, for ten months of each year. The figure is indexed and revised annually, so take it from the Migration Agency's own page and nowhere else, including here.

For a two-year master's you are typically showing money for the first year up front and demonstrating the rest is available. Around SEK 100,000 a year of living costs is the number to plan against - roughly EUR 9,000 - and that is on top of any tuition a partial waiver leaves you. How you apply for one

The route runs through the national portal, not the university:

1. 1Apply to programmes on universityadmissions.se by the mid-January deadline. You may rank up to four.
2. 2Pay the SEK 900 application fee. Non-EU applicants pay this whatever the outcome; there is no waiver of the fee itself.
3. 3Upload supporting documents by the early February deadline.
4. 4Apply for the waiver. Some universities award automatically from the admission file. Others open a separate short form, often in January or February, and a few ask for an extra statement. This varies by university and it is your job to check each one on your list.
5. 5Results arrive alongside or shortly after admission results in the spring.

Keeping it

Waivers are normally granted for the first year and continued on satisfactory progress - a set number of credits per year. Fall behind and the waiver can stop while you are still enrolled, at which point the full fee resumes. Plan for that possibility rather than assuming a two-year award.

An honest comparison

For most Bangladeshi applicants the waiver is the realistic instrument and SISGP is the long shot. That means Sweden is affordable only for a family that can genuinely fund around SEK 100,000 a year of living costs. Why applications fail

3. 3Not checking each university's own waiver process and assuming it is automatic.
4. 4Not paying the SEK 900 fee, which invalidates the application entirely.
