The gate that decides most of it

Before the deadlines, the documents or the odds, there is one requirement that removes most readers: at least 3,000 hours of documented work experience. Paid employment, internships, voluntary work and certain positions of responsibility can all count, but the total has to be evidenced and the bar is high - roughly two years of full-time work.

This is deliberate. SISGP is a scholarship for professionals with leadership experience who intend to go back and use it, not a scholarship for the strongest recent graduate. If you finished your bachelor's last year and have been studying since, you are not the target and the application will not be competitive no matter how good your results are.

That single fact is more useful than anything else in this article, because it saves people a full application cycle.

What it pays

These figures are set by the Swedish Institute for each round and are published on its own site. Treat the numbers above as the shape rather than the current amount.

It also does not cover family. ⚠️ SISGP does not fund dependants, and Sweden's requirements for bringing a spouse or child are separate and additional. Anyone planning to move a family on this scholarship needs to read the family guide first, not afterwards.

The two-stage timeline

This trips people up more than the eligibility does. There are two applications, to two different organisations, with two different deadlines, and the second one is only open to people who completed the first.

Two consequences. First, you pay the SEK 900 application fee before you know anything about the scholarship - it is not waived or refunded for scholarship applicants. Second, the SI window is short and comes after the university deadline has passed, so there is no way to fix a missed January date in February.

Eligibility beyond the hours

• You apply to master's programmes on the Swedish Institute's eligible programme list - not every Swedish master's qualifies.
• You must be a citizen of an eligible country. Bangladesh has been on that list; confirm it for the current round rather than assuming.
• You must not already hold a Swedish residence permit for reasons other than studies, and generally must not already be living in Sweden.
• You rank up to four programmes in your university application, and the ranking interacts with the scholarship - read SI's own instructions on this carefully, because getting the order wrong is a self-inflicted wound.

How competitive is it, honestly

Very. The Swedish Institute publishes the number of awards and the number of applicants for each round, and the ratio is the kind where a strong application still loses. There is no allocation reserved for Bangladesh - unlike Stipendium Hungaricum, where places are agreed bilaterally, SISGP pools applicants globally and you compete with experienced professionals from every continent.

So apply, and apply properly, and do not build a plan that only works if you win it.

What the application is actually assessed on

Three things, weighted toward the third:

1. 1Academic record - necessary, not sufficient.
2. 2Work and leadership experience - the 3,000 hours, and what you did with them.
3. 3What you intend to do with the degree afterwards. SI funds people who will apply the education to development in their home country. A motivation letter about your own career progress is a weaker letter than one about the problem you intend to work on and the specific role you expect to occupy.

Write it yourself. Name real organisations, real projects and real numbers from your own work.

Why applications fail

1. 1Under 3,000 hours, or hours that cannot be documented with letters and dates.
2. 2Missing the January university deadline, which closes the February window automatically.
3. 3Applying to programmes not on the eligible list.
4. 4Not paying the SEK 900 fee, which makes the university application incomplete and therefore invalid.
5. 5A motivation letter about personal ambition rather than about what you will do in Bangladesh afterwards.
6. 6No parallel plan. Results land in late April, by which point several other countries have closed.

What to do now

1. 1Count your documented hours honestly. Under 3,000, this is not your scholarship this year.
2. 2If you clear it, work backwards from mid-January and start in October.
3. 3Check the eligible programme list before shortlisting anything.
4. 4Read the tuition fee waiver guide, because a university waiver is the realistic fallback and it works differently.
