Sweden's intakes and deadlines: when to start, and what is already too late

In short: Sweden's admission door opens once a year. The autumn intake (August to September) is applied for between 15 October and 15 January, through one national portal, universityadmissions.se. Miss it and the next chance is twelve months away. And a second clock runs that almost nobody plans for: fee-paying students must pay the first tuition instalment before the residence permit application can be made at all — so the money has to be ready weeks before the permit date, not on it.

Of our nine countries, Sweden has the most orderly application system, which is exactly why it is the least forgiving. Elsewhere, being late costs you your preferred university. In Sweden it costs you the year. This page lays the calendar out and keeps two things separate: the dates an authority publishes, and the timing that is our own advice.

Sweden runs two intakes, and they are not equals

Read those two rows against each other. The spring window closes earlier than the autumn one. So "I missed the January deadline, I will go in spring instead" is structurally impossible in Sweden: spring's door shut five months before autumn's did. What spring is generally good for is set out in the spring intake, and who it suits.

Six clocks run at the same time

This is why the page needs to exist: the dates are not published in one place. Most applicants watch one clock — the admission deadline — while the other five run out quietly.

Only one of the six sits on the national portal. The rest belong to different authorities, on different timetables.

The autumn intake, worked backwards

The third column is the most honest part of this page. Published means an authority stated that date itself. Our advice means timing we see work, and you can move it.

The clock almost nobody plans for

Our country guide has carried one line about Sweden for a long time, and it is the most expensive surprise in the route: fee-paying students must pay the first tuition instalment before the permit application, and without it the application cannot be made.

Follow that through a real calendar. An offer arrives at the end of March; you accept in April, read the invoice, and send tuition from a Bangladeshi bank — which is not a single click. Three consequences follow.

Your maintenance funds and your tuition money are not the same money. The permit asks for SEK 10,656 per month, roughly EUR 960, for every month it covers, held in your own name — but the tuition instalment *leaves* that account. Keep the two sums apart, or a statement taken after the transfer shows a shortfall that was never really there. What the evidence has to show is in proof of funds and bank statements for a European student visa. Sweden uses no German-style blocked account, a distinction explained in blocked accounts.

The figures are set in Swedish kronor. The euro arithmetic you did in October will not hold in June: the rate moves and the maintenance level is adjusted annually. Take the current figure from Migrationsverket on the day you apply.

If the permit is refused after you have paid, the tuition does not come back automatically. Refund policy is the university's own, on its own pages. Read it before you accept the offer — read it afterwards and it is no longer a decision, only news. The SEK 1,500 permit fee is not refundable in any case.

Spring: a real alternative, or just a later start?

The honest answer, for most Bangladeshi applicants, is that it is not an alternative.

None of the paperwork gets lighter — transcripts, translation, attestation, IELTS, funds, all the same. Only the start date moves and the choice narrows. Spring has exactly one correct use: the programme you want is named on the spring list and you deliberately want to start later. It cannot rescue a missed autumn deadline, because it closes first.

The section almost nobody writes, and the one readers came for. Find the month you are standing in.

The wait-a-year test

Waiting twelve months is cheaper than a refusal on a rushed file, which costs the money, the year, and adds a refusal history to the next application. If two of these five are true, we say the next cycle plainly.

4. 4Funds are not yet settled in your own name, or the balance arrived last week in one transfer. Start with getting a bank statement in Bangladesh.
5. 5You cannot free the cash for a first instalment between April and June. The least discussed and hardest condition on the list, and there is no way around it.

Who Sweden is wrong for

A page that only encourages is an advertisement, not advice. Plainly: some readers should walk away from Sweden.

Anyone who needs to be in Europe within six months should — the calendar does not permit it. Anyone planning to cover tuition from part-time earnings should recalculate: term-time work is capped at 15 hours a week on permits granted from 11 June 2026, the limit is relaxed over the summer and for university-related work, and a great many Swedish jobs require Swedish (student work rules in Sweden). Anyone hoping to clear the English requirement with a medium-of-instruction letter should look elsewhere: most Swedish universities do not accept a Bangladeshi MOI, so IELTS or an equivalent is effectively compulsory (IELTS requirements by country). Five things widely repeated and wrong

"Sweden accepts applications year-round." It does not. One national round, one window, one closing date.

"You can apply late, after 15 January." Some programmes may show later openings, but for a fee-paying international applicant that is not a route to rely on: seats are rarely there and the scholarship doors have shut.

"Get the visa first, pay tuition later." In Sweden it is the other way round: instalment first, permit second.

"A permit and a visa are the same thing." Sweden issues a national residence permit for studies, not a Schengen visa — see your first 90 days and the residence permit card.

"Scholarships can wait until after admission." They cannot. The Swedish Institute scholarship is a February application, university tuition waivers cluster around the admission deadline, and the regional picture is in Nordic scholarships.

The honest summary

Sweden's calendar is not cruel; it is rigid. To someone who started in the middle of the previous year, 15 January is an ordinary date. To someone who began looking in December, it is a wall. The two are usually equally qualified — the difference is when they opened the calendar.
