The nations
Student life in Lund runs through its student nations — student-run organisations that operate cheap canteens, cafés, parties, sports and, crucially, housing. Membership costs very little and it is the main door into both the social side and cheap eating. For an international student this is Lund's single biggest practical advantage.
The university
Lund University is one of Sweden's largest and oldest, strong in engineering (LTH), sciences, business, law and social sciences, with a wide English-taught master's catalogue.
Housing
Accommodation in Lund is limited and competitive, but the university arranges housing for fee-paying international students — check the terms and the extent of any guarantee on the university's own page. Beyond that there is AF Bostäder and the nations' own housing, and commuting from Malmö by train is common.
Work, honestly
A small town, so ordinary jobs are limited and your competition is other students. The realistic options are working inside a nation (bar, café, events), university assistantships, and commuting into the Malmö-Copenhagen area. Work-hour rules follow the national position; confirm on Migrationsverket.
The honest bits
- 1A small town. If you want a big city's pace, this is not it.
- 2Limited housing — the university's arrangement is the safest route.
- 3On the other side: the most affordable of Sweden's big university towns, the nation culture, and Copenhagen and Malmö within easy reach.
Before you fly
- 1Accept any university housing offer immediately.
- 2Buy a second-hand bicycle — in Lund it is a necessity, not a luxury.
- 3Read the application walkthrough and the residence permit guide.

Common questions
How much does a student need per month in Lund?+
Typically SEK 7,500-10,500, about EUR 670-930 — the most affordable of Sweden's major university towns. Because it is small and flat, cycling removes almost all transport costs.
What is a student nation?+
A student-run organisation in Lund that operates cheap canteens, cafés, events, sports and housing. Membership is inexpensive and, for an international student, it is the main route into both cheap food and social life.
Lund, Gothenburg or Stockholm?+
Lund is cheapest, then Gothenburg, with Stockholm the most expensive. For work and internships the order reverses. All three are strong universities, so choose the programme first and treat the city as the second decision.
