Which Swedish universities are actually worth applying to from Bangladesh

The short answer

There is no single best Swedish university for a Bangladeshi student, and the reason is structural rather than diplomatic: the question does not fit the way Sweden admits people.

You do not apply to Swedish universities one at a time. The whole sector runs through one portal, universityadmissions.se. One account, one set of documents, one fee of SEK 900 however many choices you make. Inside that single application you select up to four programmes and rank them. The autumn round opens 15 October and closes 15 January.

Then the part that changes everything: you receive at most one offer — the highest-ranked choice you are judged qualified for. Everything below it falls away.

So the question is not which university is best. It is: what order do I put my four in?

Why this is one page and not fifteen

Some sites keep a page for every Swedish university with a recognisable name. We do not, deliberately: when we measured what Bangladeshi students type, each institution name drew one or two searches and the question underneath them was the same. The ones that earn a guide of their own have one, linked below.

A ranking is answering a question you are not asking

A world ranking is assembled from research output, citations and reputation surveys among academics, none of which changes what you pay, whether you are admitted, or whether your file arrives in time. In Sweden it is less useful still, because the portal, the fee, the deadline and the admission rules are identical across institutions.

Four things are not.

1. 1Is that exact programme genuinely taught in English? Not the catalogue in general — the one course you would enrol on. Most bachelor's teaching in Sweden happens in Swedish, and the English-taught list at bachelor level is short.
2. 2How likely is a tuition fee waiver, and when is its deadline? Public tuition runs roughly EUR 7,000-13,000 a year, and nearly every university runs its own fee waiver scheme.
3. 3What does the city cost every month? A student in Sweden spends EUR 750-1,100 a month, and most of that spread is rent.
4. 4Does your transcript match what the programme names? Swedish admission leans heavily on documented prior coursework — named subjects and credit volumes — rather than on CGPA alone.

A fifth sits behind those four, and here Sweden differs from almost every other destination. The admission deadline is national and identical for everyone: 15 January. What varies by institution is the *money* deadline — the university's own fee waiver application, and the separate scholarship window. That is the date people miss, not the admission one.

The three institutions we cover in depth

All three are state universities, all three are applied to through the same portal, on the same fee and the same date.

City cost level is a position, not a price. The Sweden-wide band is EUR 750-1,100 a month; the real figure is in each city guide — Stockholm, Lund and Gothenburg. We have no Uppsala city guide yet; until we write one, treat Stockholm's figures as the ceiling and take actual rent from the university's housing pages.

One thing the table cannot show constrains more applicants than anything in it: at all three, bachelor's teaching is largely in Swedish and the English-taught catalogue is overwhelmingly master's level. That alone removes Sweden from many plans made straight after HSC, and no ranking mentions it.

How to order the four

This is the part of the decision that only exists in Sweden. Because exactly one offer will come back, give each slot a different job, and build the set so all four cannot fail for the same reason.

Four rules make that table work.

Choose four programmes, not four universities. You apply to a course, and two courses at the same university can differ in language of instruction, entry requirements and tuition.

Rank honestly. Put the one you would actually accept at the top. Place a safe option too high and you will be given it, while the choices below it are never assessed.

Keep at least one in a cheaper city. Compounded across a two-year master's, the gap between the top and the bottom of the EUR 750-1,100 band dwarfs any difference a ranking measures.

Verify each choice is really taught in English from the programme's own page, not from a course-finder summary.

The fee is paid once, so there is no reason to leave a slot empty — but an unpaid application is not assessed at all, so if a Bangladeshi card struggles with international payments, sort that out early with the application fee guide. Results come in the spring, months after you apply.

Who actually pays for you

Whether Sweden is affordable is usually decided by the money, and the two sources work on entirely different rules.

Two warnings, and both of them break plans.

A full tuition waiver is not a funded place. It covers tuition and nothing else — no rent, no food, no transport, no insurance. Migrationsverket separately requires SEK 10,656 a month, roughly EUR 960, for every month the permit covers, waiver or no waiver. Sweden uses no blocked account, which sounds like relief and is the opposite: the whole burden of proof sits on your own statement, so read how proof of funds is assessed before assembling anything, and how to read a scholarship advertisement before believing the word "funded".

The Swedish Institute scholarship is not open to fresh graduates. Its defining condition is 3,000 hours of documented work experience, roughly two years of full-time employment, so a recent bachelor's graduate is not the intended applicant whatever their results. It also opens after 15 January, which means it cannot be applied for without the university application already done — "I will look for scholarships after the deadline" is not a plan that exists. How to check any Swedish university yourself

Most readers will consider an institution we have not written about, so here is the method rather than a list. Five checks, each able to end the conversation on its own.

1. Is the programme genuinely taught in English?

In Sweden, English-taught overwhelmingly means master's; the bachelor's list is much shorter. Most Swedish universities do not accept a Bangladeshi MOI certificate, so in practice IELTS is required. 2. Is the institution on the national portal?

The public-versus-private question that dominates a decision in Italy or Cyprus barely arises here: Swedish higher education is overwhelmingly state-run and the sector admits through one central portal. So the Swedish version of the check is simpler. Is the institution listed on universityadmissions.se? If not, it is an exception, and an exception needs checking on its own terms — accreditation, what the qualification is worth, the refund policy. 3. When is the fee waiver deadline?

The admission deadline is the same for everyone. The money deadline is not. Some universities award a waiver from the admission file alone; others open a separate form with a short motivation statement. Open the university's own fee and scholarship page and write that date down separately. It is the deadline that lets someone be admitted and still be unable to go.

4. What does the city cost?

Inside the EUR 750-1,100 band, the split runs roughly: rent EUR 400-650, food EUR 230-330, transport EUR 50-75, other EUR 90-160. 5. Does your degree, and its content, match?

Swedish admission rests heavily on what you have already studied, not on grades alone: programmes list required background in named subjects and credit volumes, and your transcript is read against it line by line. So settle two things early — how Europe reads a three-year pass degree against a four-year honours, and how a CGPA converts into European grades and credits. The portal also publishes country-specific document instructions for Bangladesh, stating which documents and how each must be sent; ignoring that page is the commonest reason a Bangladeshi application is treated as incomplete. Sweden accepts an apostille, which makes the document chain simpler than it is for several other destinations.

If the name is the reason you chose it

For most Bangladeshi students the binding constraint is money and timing, not prestige. Swedish universities are not rejecting you in large numbers; a calendar, a waiver deadline and a city's rent are.

Choosing on reputation produces a predictable outcome. All four slots go to the most competitive programmes in the most expensive city, the separate waiver deadline goes unnoticed, and in the spring one offer arrives for a place that cannot be afforded — at a point in the year when reapplying means waiting a full cycle. Prestige is not worthless; it is the fifth consideration, not the first. If two programmes come out level on the four above, take the better-known one.

Who should ignore this page

If you want a PhD, none of this applies. A PhD in Sweden is a salaried job you are hired into, advertised as a post rather than admitted through the portal: a PhD in Sweden is a job.

If the plan is to pay for study by working, Sweden is the wrong country. Since 11 June 2026 term-time work is capped at 15 hours a week, relaxed over the summer and for university-related work, and breaching the cap can cost you the permit: student work rules in Sweden.

If the goal is permanent residence quickly, check the arithmetic first.
