Sweden does not give you a student visa
It gives you a residence permit for studies. The distinction is not pedantry: a visa is a short-stay travel document, a residence permit is permission to live somewhere, and they are applied for through different systems with different rules. Anyone who tells you they are filing a "Sweden student visa" for you is either simplifying or has not read the process. A visa admits you for a visit; a permit lets you live somewhere and study.
Who does what
| Step | Who | Where |
|---|---|---|
| Application and fee | You, online | Swedish Migration Agency e-service |
| Assessment and decision | Swedish Migration Agency | Sweden |
| Appointment, identity check, passport | Embassy of Sweden | Bay's Edgewater, 6th floor, Gulshan 2, Dhaka 1212 |
| Outsourced visa centre | Nobody | There is none for this permit in Bangladesh |
Checked against the embassy's own contact page on 9 September 2026. The switchboard runs Sunday to Thursday, and the migration line has its own narrower hours — the page lists Sunday, Tuesday and Thursday afternoons — so a call placed on a Saturday reaches nothing.
The part worth reading twice
The embassy states in plain language that all appointments relating to a residence permit are arranged exclusively by the embassy and are provided free of charge, and it publishes a warning about individuals who falsely claim to represent the Migration Agency or the embassy and offer, for money, to secure an earlier appointment or influence a decision.
That warning is unusual. Embassies do not normally publish fraud notices about their own process unless the fraud is common. Read it as a map of exactly which promise is worthless in this market: an earlier slot, a friendly officer, a guaranteed outcome.
What actually decides a Swedish student file
The permit turns on two things you can prepare and one you cannot:
- 1Admission to a Swedish programme, through the national admissions service. The mechanics are in the university admissions walkthrough.
- 2Maintenance funds for the whole permit period, as a monthly figure set by the Migration Agency and published on its site. It is uprated regularly, so take the number from the agency's page on the day you apply and not from any article, this one included.
- 3Comprehensive health insurance where the programme is under one year.
The Migration Agency publishes waiting-time statistics for each permit type on its own site, and those are the only processing figures worth quoting. Anything shorter that you have been told is a sales number.
The other thing the Dhaka embassy does
The Swedish embassy in Dhaka also handles short-stay Schengen visas on behalf of Finland. That is real, and it confuses students every year, because it does not help them: a student going to Finland needs a residence permit, not a short-stay visa, and that goes to Finland's own mission in New Delhi. See where Bangladeshi students apply for a Finnish visa.
What Sweden does not ask for
It is worth naming the things students expect and then do not find, because agents sometimes sell them.
- No blocked account. Sweden is not Germany. None of our nine uses a blocked account in the German sense; the evidence is your own funds, documented. The point is made properly in proof of funds for a European student visa.
- No outsourced centre, as above.
- No paid appointment, ever.
- No agent as your representative at the embassy. You attend.
What happens after approval
A residence permit for studies is normally granted for a defined period rather than for the whole degree, and it is renewed from inside Sweden while you are studying. Two practical consequences follow.
First, the funds evidence you show at the start covers the permit period being granted, not necessarily four years, so a longer programme means going through the money exercise again later. Second, renewals are judged partly on academic progress, which makes the first year's results an immigration matter as well as an academic one. That is not a threat; it is simply the design, and it is why a programme you can actually keep up with is a better choice than the most impressive one you can get into.
You will be issued a residence permit card carrying your photograph and fingerprints. That card, not any sticker, is what proves your right to be in Sweden.
Before you start
- Fix any name mismatch across your documents first, because the permit is issued against your passport exactly as written: fixing a name mismatch.
- Scan properly. The Swedish e-service is unforgiving about file quality; see scanning and file size rules for uploads.
- Read the country guide for fees, tuition and the deadline shape: study in Sweden from Bangladesh.
- Do not treat part-time earnings as part of the maintenance figure. Sweden's requirement is about money you have before you go, and in practice most student jobs in Sweden need Swedish.
The honest summary
Sweden is the least outsourced of our nine. That is good news for cost and bad news for capacity: there is one office, it books its own appointments, and there is no commercial centre absorbing the volume. Apply early, keep the funds evidence clean, and ignore anyone selling access to a queue the embassy says it controls itself.

Common questions
Is there a VFS centre for Swedish student applications in Dhaka?+
No. For a residence permit for studies there is no outsourced application centre in Bangladesh. The application is made online to the Swedish Migration Agency and the Embassy of Sweden in Dhaka handles the in-person step itself.
Can someone get me an earlier appointment at the Swedish embassy?+
The embassy's own site says appointments relating to residence permits are arranged exclusively by the embassy and are free of charge, and it warns about people who falsely claim to represent it and offer earlier slots for payment. Treat any such offer as a fraud indicator.
Why do people say the Swedish embassy handles Finland's visas?+
Because it does, for short-stay Schengen visas. That is not the student route. A student going to Finland needs a residence permit, and residence permit matters for Bangladeshi applicants are handled by the Finnish mission in New Delhi, not by Sweden in Dhaka.
