What you actually need for a Swedish university and the residence permit

In short: Sweden tests five things — a qualification it recognises, documents delivered exactly the way its portal demands, English proved by a test, not a college letter, money in two stages with the tuition instalment paid before the permit application, and one application closing on 15 January. No blocked account. No VFS centre. No MOI letter.

Ask what you need to study in Sweden and you are handed a document list. That list is the output, not the requirement. Sweden tests five things, and every paper in every checklist evidences one of them — so when a document is missing, the only useful question is which of the five it was proving.

Sweden is also the most calendar-driven of the nine: nearly everything else here can be fixed in a fortnight; the deadline cannot.

1. The qualification: what it opens, and what it does not

For a bachelor the test is your HSC, and an ordinary Bangladeshi HSC clears it. The catch is not eligibility but supply: Sweden teaches comparatively few bachelor programmes in English, so a school-leaver who qualifies on paper may find very little to apply to — what you can study in English in Sweden, and a bachelor's in Europe after HSC for where the list is longer.

For a master's the filter is credits, not years. A three-year bachelor is roughly 180 ECTS and a four-year roughly 240, and most European master's require at least 180 — so a Bangladeshi four-year honours degree is accepted almost everywhere while a three-year pass degree is the problem case, usually fixed by a one-year Bangladeshi master's on top: pass versus honours. Private and National University graduates should start attestation early, because their paperwork has an extra step.

There is no official universal conversion for CGPA, so a precise table is somebody's own arithmetic. Our working rule: 3.0 out of 4.0 is a common threshold, 3.5 and above competitive for scholarships, 2.5 to 3.0 means choosing programmes carefully — CGPA to European grades, the best of the nine with a low CGPA. A gap is acceptable when you can explain it, and master's applications want course descriptions and syllabi too.

2. Delivery: the requirement everyone treats as a formality

This is the step Bangladeshi applications fail on most often, and it has nothing to do with the applicant's quality.

The portal publishes a page of instructions for each country, Bangladesh included, stating which documents are required and — the part that matters — how each one must reach Sweden. Some may be uploaded. Others must be sent directly by the issuing institution. Substituting a more convenient method does not produce a weaker application; it produces one that is not assessed. Read it before you collect anything: applying through universityadmissions.se. Everything feeding it is slower than expected — collecting transcripts, certified translation in Dhaka, scanning and file size rules.

Bangladesh joined the Apostille Convention, in force 30 March 2025, and Sweden accepts an apostille. Its Nordic neighbours differ: Denmark, Greece and Finland objected, so for those three an apostille is worthless and the full consular legalisation chain still applies. Never generalise a Nordic rule from one Nordic country — the countries that refuse it. Fix any name mismatch across your documents first, because the permit is issued against your passport exactly as written.

3. Language: your MOI letter will almost certainly not be accepted

Say it plainly, because it is the costliest wrong assumption in this market: most Swedish universities do not accept a Bangladeshi Medium of Instruction letter. An English test — in practice IELTS — is effectively required. In several other European countries an MOI letter genuinely works, which is why people assume it travels: which universities accept an MOI letter, the MOI certificate itself.

Be careful with quoted numbers. On the programmes we track, bachelor entry sits at roughly 6.0 overall and master's entry at roughly 6.5 overall — our observation of programme policy, not a national rule. Swedish programmes commonly also set a minimum for each individual section, so a 6.5 carried by strong reading and weak writing fails requirements the overall figure suggests it would pass. Compare destinations in IELTS requirements by country; if you hoped to skip the test, the best of the nine without IELTS says Sweden is not on that list.

Timing is the real trap. A test date is a queue you do not control, and a 15 January deadline means booking in the autumn at the latest: IELTS fees and test dates, a three-month plan, how long a score stays valid. Discovering in December that your MOI letter is not accepted is how a Sweden application becomes next year's Sweden application.

4. Money: tested twice, and the first test comes before the permit

Sweden asks about money twice, and the order reshapes the whole plan. Four numbers matter, doing two different jobs: one you only show, three you actually spend.

The moneyAmountShow or spend
Maintenance fundsSEK 10,656 a month, about EUR 960, every month of the permitShown, never surrendered
Application feeSEK 900, paid once, covering up to four ranked choicesSpent, non-refundable; unpaid means unassessed
Permit feeSEK 1,500Spent, non-refundable even on refusal
First tuition instalmentA portion of EUR 7,000 to 13,000, fixed by your universitySpent, before the permit application

The instalment is the one that reorders everything. A fee-paying student must pay it before applying for the residence permit — without it, the application cannot be made at all. In family terms: the money leaves Bangladesh for a Swedish university, and only then does an immigration officer look at the file. No permit in hand, no guarantee. Ask for the exact amount and refund policy in writing before transferring: sending tuition from Bangladesh, paying application fees. Waivers exist but are applied for separately, on early deadlines: Swedish tuition fee waivers, Nordic scholarships.

**On the maintenance funds, the word that matters is *monthly*. It is assessed for every month the permit covers, so a two-year master's is assessed across the whole period, not one year — the design choice that turns Sweden from expensive into very expensive on the visa file. Living costs run EUR 750 to 1,100 a month**: roughly EUR 400 to 650 for housing, 230 to 330 for food, 50 to 75 for transport and 90 to 160 for everything else. All these figures are set in kronor and adjusted, so take the current numbers from the Migration Agency and the portal.

No blocked account, in Sweden or in any of the nine (why none of them use one). Because nothing is frozen, scrutiny moves to whether the money is genuinely yours, so a clean history beats a large recent deposit: proof of funds, bank statements, sponsors and affidavits, why an inflated statement gets caught. Budget the Bangladesh-side spend too — roughly BDT 2 to 4 lakh for a single-country application decided locally, an air ticket at BDT 70,000 to 120,000 one way, attestation and translation at BDT 10,000 to 30,000, courier at BDT 4,000 to 9,000, none refundable on refusal.

5. The process gates: one portal, one deadline, one embassy

Every Swedish university is applied to through universityadmissions.se. One application, several programmes ranked by preference, at most one offer following that ranking. The autumn round opens 15 October and closes 15 January for an August or September start, with results in spring. One window, once a year: miss 15 January and the next chance is twelve months away. The portal publishes its exact key dates each year and they can shift, so confirm them there — applying through universityadmissions.se. A spring intake exists but carries far fewer programmes and closes months earlier.

Then the permit. Sweden issues no student visa but a residence permit for studies, applied for online to Migrationsverket once you accept the offer and pay the instalment. There is no VFS or outsourced centre in Bangladesh: the Embassy of Sweden in Dhaka handles the identity step itself and says permit appointments are arranged exclusively by the embassy, free of charge — how Sweden handles a Bangladeshi application. EU law allows a complete application a maximum of 90 days under Directive 2016/801, but the clock starts when the file is complete: how long each student visa takes. Insurance is required where the programme runs under a year — health insurance.

A PhD is not on that table because it is a different route entirely: a salaried job you are hired into, advertised as a vacancy and not applied for through the portal — a PhD in Sweden is a job.

What is not a requirement, whatever you have been told

A blocked account. Sweden does not use one. Anyone telling you to freeze a year of living costs has copied Germany's rule.

An MOI letter instead of IELTS. This myth runs backwards: people assume it is accepted, and in Sweden it generally is not.

A single annual lump sum. The funds test is monthly and runs the whole permit period, so a yearly number understates a two-year master's badly.

A Schengen visa. Sweden is in the EU and Schengen, but you receive a national residence permit — the card allows short trips, it is not a regional travel permit: travelling in Schengen on a student permit.

A VFS centre, a paid appointment, or an agent to represent you. None of the three exists here.

A success rate. No authority publishes one, so any percentage quoted at you is marketing: why nobody publishes one.

Who Sweden is the wrong country for

Anyone planning to fund the degree from part-time work. Since 11 June 2026 term-time work is capped at 15 hours a week, relaxed over the summer and for work connected to your own university. That is the lowest of the nine, and against tuition of EUR 7,000 to 13,000 and living costs of EUR 750 to 1,100 a month it is a contribution to groceries, not a plan — student work rules in Sweden, the nine ranked for part-time work, a student visa is not a work permit.

Anyone who cannot pay an instalment before a decision. If the family's money only arrives after a permit is granted, Sweden's order of operations does not work, and no document polishing changes it. That is not a reason to give up on Europe, but to apply where the money gates fall in a different order — Finland versus Sweden, Sweden versus Denmark.

Anyone whose real goal is settlement rather than study. Ordinary bachelor and master's years do not count toward permanent residence; only working years do, and citizenship now follows eight years of residence. Sweden grants a 12-month job-seeking permit after graduation, 12 to 18 months on research and doctoral routes, but that is a window to find qualified work in, not a shortcut: from student to work permit, what Sweden is actually good for.

And honestly: not everyone is competitive here. A large unexplained gap, weak results or thin English evidence reduces the odds, and we would rather say so at the start than after the money is gone.

The order to start in

English first, because a test date is a queue and an MOI letter will not rescue you. Documents second, off the portal's Bangladesh page rather than a generic checklist. Money third, because a traceable history takes months to exist. Then the application by 15 January, the offer, the instalment, Migrationsverket. Start at the permit end and you meet the English requirement in December, which is how a year gets lost. See our Sweden country guide and study in Sweden.

Common questions

What do you actually need to study in Sweden from Bangladesh?+

Five things. A qualification Sweden recognises, which for a bachelor is HSC and for a master's is a bachelor judged on credits. Documents delivered exactly the way the portal's Bangladesh country page specifies. English evidenced by a test result, because most Swedish universities will not accept a Medium of Instruction letter. Money in two stages: the first tuition instalment if you are fee-paying, then SEK 10,656 a month for every month of the permit. And one application through universityadmissions.se by the 15 January deadline.

Will Swedish universities accept an MOI certificate instead of IELTS?+

Generally no. Most Swedish universities do not accept a Bangladeshi Medium of Instruction letter, which makes an English test effectively compulsory for Bangladeshi applicants. This is the single most expensive wrong assumption in this market, because it is usually discovered in December, when the next available test date is already too late for a 15 January deadline. Sweden is the strictest of the nine countries we work with on English evidence.

What IELTS score does Sweden require?+

There is no single national score. On the programmes we track, bachelor entry sits at roughly 6.0 overall and master's entry at roughly 6.5 overall, and universities usually also set a minimum for each individual section rather than the overall score alone. That is our observation of programme requirements, not a rule published by Sweden. Read the specific programme page, because a 6.5 overall with one weak section fails plenty of Swedish programmes that a quoted overall figure suggests it would pass.

Do I really have to pay tuition before applying for the residence permit?+

Yes, if you are a fee-paying student, and this is the part that surprises Bangladeshi families most. The first tuition instalment must be paid before the permit application, and without it you cannot apply at all. So the family commits real money to a Swedish university before any immigration officer has looked at the file, with no permit in hand and no guarantee. Plan the money on that order, and read each university's published refund policy before you transfer anything.

How much money does Sweden ask you to show?+

SEK 10,656 a month at the 2026 level, roughly EUR 960, and the important word is monthly. The requirement is assessed for every month the permit covers, not once for a year, so a two-year master's is assessed across the whole period and the total is far larger than the monthly figure suggests. The amount is set in Swedish kronor and adjusted, so take the current figure from the Migration Agency's own page on the day you apply rather than from any article.

Does Sweden need a blocked account?+

No. A blocked account is a German mechanism and none of the nine countries we work with uses one. Sweden asks you to evidence funds, normally held in your own name, rather than to lock them away with a third party. That is a genuine advantage, but it comes with a matching disadvantage: because nothing is frozen, the Migration Agency looks closely at whether the money is really yours and really available, so a large recent transfer into an otherwise ordinary account reads as a problem rather than as evidence.

Can I work part-time in Sweden to pay for my studies?+

No, and the rules were tightened in 2026. Since 11 June 2026 term-time work is capped at 15 hours a week, the lowest limit among the nine countries we work with, with the cap relaxed over the summer and for work connected to your own university. Against tuition of EUR 7,000 to 13,000 a year and living costs of EUR 750 to 1,100 a month, 15 hours is a contribution to groceries, not a funding plan. Migrationsverket does not count expected earnings toward the funds requirement either.

Is there a VFS centre for Swedish student applications in Dhaka?+

No. The permit application is made online to the Migration Agency, and the Embassy of Sweden in Dhaka handles the in-person identity step itself. The embassy states that residence permit appointments are arranged exclusively by the embassy and are free of charge, and it publishes a warning about people who offer, for money, to secure an earlier slot or influence a decision. Anyone selling either is selling something they do not control.

Does Sweden accept an apostille on Bangladeshi documents?+

Yes. Bangladesh joined the Apostille Convention, in force 30 March 2025, and Sweden accepts one, as do Italy, Cyprus, Hungary, Malta and Bulgaria. Its Nordic neighbours differ, which is why this is worth checking per country rather than per region: Denmark, Greece and Finland objected under Article 12, so an apostille is worthless for those three and the full consular legalisation chain still applies. Separately, always follow the portal's own document instructions, which govern how a document reaches Sweden.

What happens if I miss the January deadline?+

In practice you wait a year for the autumn intake. The autumn round opens 15 October and closes 15 January, one window a year. That is the real cost of Sweden's single national round, and it is the reason this country punishes late starters more than any other on our list except Finland. A spring intake exists but carries far fewer programmes, most of them at master's level, and its window closes months earlier. Neither round has a late application route worth relying on, so the planning question in Sweden is always how early you start, not how fast you can finish.
