How long a Swedish student permit really takes from Dhaka, and why this is the expensive wait

In short: Sweden decides in Sweden. The application goes online to Migrationsverket, the Dhaka embassy only does the identity check, and EU Directive 2016/801 caps a decision on a complete application at 90 days — counted from the day the file became complete, not the day you submitted it. We commonly observe one to four months, which is our observation and nobody's promise. What makes this particular wait different: fee-paying students pay the first tuition instalment before the permit application can be made at all.

Ask the question properly and the answer becomes useful

"How long does a Swedish student visa take?" is the question everyone asks, and the honest answer is a mechanism rather than a number. For Sweden there is a better version of the question: how long will my money be gone while I hold nothing?

Because Sweden's order of operations is unusual. Sweden does not issue a student visa at all; it issues a residence permit for studies. And a fee-paying student must pay the first tuition instalment before the permit application can be made. Without that payment the application cannot be started. So the wait begins from a position where a large sum has already left Bangladesh and nothing has yet been granted in return.

None of the other eight destinations we work with puts the payment first in this way; it is Sweden's defining difference, and it turns a patience question into a cash-exposure question. That is the honest framing, and this article follows it.

Where the file goes, and who actually decides

That table has one practical consequence: the person deciding your case does not sit in Dhaka. Calling the embassy to ask how far along your file is reaches an office that genuinely does not hold that information. The full route is in how Sweden handles a Bangladeshi student application.

One more thing belongs here, because it is sold in this market. The Dhaka embassy states on its own pages that appointments relating to residence permits are arranged exclusively by the embassy and are free of charge, and it publishes a warning about individuals who falsely claim to represent it and offer, for money, an earlier appointment or a favourable decision. Missions do not usually publish fraud notices about their own process unless the fraud is routine. Read it as a map of which promises are worthless.

What starts the clock, and what quietly stops it

Sweden is an EU member state, so the students and researchers directive applies: a decision on a complete application within a maximum of 90 days. The load-bearing word is complete, and it is where most timelines are miscalculated.

A file missing a translation is not a slow file. It is an incomplete file, and its 90 days has not begun. Students count from the wrong day, then conclude the authority is breaking the law. It is not; the clock simply never started. What has already been spent while you wait

This is the part of Sweden that no agency page describes, and it is the reason to plan this route a year out rather than a season out.

Separately you must evidence SEK 10,656 for every month the permit covers, roughly EUR 960 at the 2026 level. That is proof, not spending — but the tuition instalment is spending, and the same money cannot do both jobs. What tracking tells you, and what it does not

Your Migrationsverket account is the tracking. There is no courier status page, because nothing is travelling — the file is digital from the start.

The account tells you the agency has received the application, that the fee is registered, whether anything has been asked of you, and the decision once it exists. It does not tell you your position in a queue, whose desk your file is on, or which week an answer will come.

In other words, tracking reports custody, not progress. It tells you where your papers are, never how far they have got. A status reading as under processing is not a signal, and silence is the normal condition rather than a bad sign. Meanwhile the *useful* number lives elsewhere: Migrationsverket publishes its own current waiting times for each permit type. That page moves, so we deliberately do not copy a figure out of it into this article — read it yourself on the day you apply. The authority's page today always beats a blog's number from last season, including ours.

Working backwards from a September start

The one instruction that genuinely shortens the wait

Answer a request for documents in days, not weeks.

It is the only real lever you hold. You do not control the decision speed, the seasonal volume, or how many officers are assigned. But whether you respond to a supplementary request in three days or three weeks is entirely yours — and because the clock is effectively stopped while the authority waits on you, that difference is added straight onto your decision date.

In practice this means three habits. Watch the account and that email address every day from the moment you file. Keep scans ready of everything slow to obtain in Bangladesh — bank statements, the police clearance certificate, translations — prepared to the scanning and file size rules. And fix any spelling mismatch across your documents before you apply, because caught mid-process it is the most expensive delay of all; the order to do it in is in fixing a name mismatch.

What is repeated everywhere and is not true

• "Sweden takes exactly N weeks." No authority commits to a date for your file. A firm number is either somebody's old experience or a sales line.
• "Money moves you up the queue." The embassy publishes the opposite in its own words: appointments are free and arranged by it alone.
• "The 90 days runs from the day I submitted." It runs from the day the file became complete.
• "Call the embassy and they will tell you." The Dhaka office does not decide the case, so it has nothing to tell.
• "I will pay tuition once the permit arrives." In Sweden that order is reversed, and it is this route's most expensive surprise.

Who this structure is wrong for

Bluntly, because said later it is useless.

If your family cannot raise the first tuition instalment and evidence the monthly maintenance figure at the same time, with no permit in hand, Sweden is the wrong country this year. That is not a judgement about the student; it is arithmetic about sequencing. And if the plan involves borrowing against land or gold to make the instalment, understand the exposure precisely: if the permit is refused, whether any of that comes back is your university's policy, not a state guarantee.

If you must leave Bangladesh this year, Sweden is effectively impossible. One admissions door a year, closing 15 January, and every step after it moving at its own pace. The figure we will not publish

We do not publish an average processing time for Sweden, because we do not have the data to produce one — and outside the authority, nobody does. What we will say is: the legal ceiling is 90 days from a complete file, the range we observe is one to four months, and the live number belongs to Migrationsverket's own page.

If a company has given you a specific number of days for Sweden, or told you a file moves faster through them, that is the clearest test available to you: there is no source behind the claim.
