What Uppsala is
Uppsala University was founded in 1477, making it the oldest university in the Nordic countries, and it sits about forty minutes north of Stockholm by train. It is unusually broad for a research university of its standing: science and technology, medicine and pharmacy, law, social sciences, theology, languages and the humanities all sit under one institution, and the English-taught master's catalogue is correspondingly wide.
For a Bangladeshi applicant that breadth matters practically. If your subject is niche, Uppsala is more likely to have it than a technical university is — and it sits close enough to Stockholm to use the capital's employment market without paying Stockholm rents.

Housing and the student nations
Uppsala has a genuine local peculiarity worth knowing before you arrive: the student nations, thirteen long-standing student societies that run cafés, dinners, events and, in several cases, housing. Membership is part of ordinary student life there and is not merely social — nations are one of the practical routes into accommodation.
⚠️ The housing queues are the thing to act on early. Uppsala allocates a great deal of student accommodation through queue systems where your position depends on when you registered, not on when you need a room. Register the day your offer arrives. An admission letter is not a bed, and September is the worst possible month to start looking.
The honest limits
- Work is capped at 15 hours a week under rules effective 11 June 2026, and most jobs outside the university expect Swedish. Fund the degree; do not plan to earn it.
- Winter is dark. Uppsala is far enough north that December daylight is genuinely short, and this affects people more than they expect. It is a real factor in choosing between Sweden and, say, Italy or Greece.
- Post-study is 12 months to look for work, longer for research and doctoral graduates — shorter than Denmark's three years. Compare properly in the Nordic comparison.
- Medicine, pharmacy, nursing and psychology are regulated. The degree is not the licence, in Sweden or in Bangladesh.
