A master's in Sweden from Bangladesh: one portal, four ranked choices, and only one offer

Md. Salahuddin 12 min read Last reviewed: 2026-09-20Choosing a country

In short: for a Bangladeshi applicant Sweden is in practice a master's destination — the English-taught offer is much wider at second cycle than at bachelor. The year turns on one round: universityadmissions.se opens 15 October, closes 15 January, you rank up to four programmes and receive at most one offer. A four-year honours degree travels well; the three-year pass degree is the problem case. Two things catch people late: most universities reject an MOI letter, and fee-payers pay the first tuition instalment before applying for the permit.

Why Sweden is a master's country, not a bachelor's one

Start with the fact the market rarely states plainly: most of Sweden's English-taught teaching happens at master's level, and at bachelor level the offer is narrow. The school-leaver often finds the door smaller than expected; the same student, three years later with a degree in hand, finds it wide open.

The trade-off inside that runs the opposite way to what people assume: more programmes, but a higher language bar.

LevelEnglish-taught offerIELTS band we observeThe realistic door
BachelorComparatively narrowaround 6.0 overallLimited and competitive
Master'sMuch wider — CS and IT, engineering, design, sustainability, businessaround 6.5 overallSweden's real entry point

Those bands are our own observation across files, not a national rule; every programme publishes its own. See what you can study in English in Sweden and the best universities in Sweden.

One portal, one round — and only one offer

Almost every Swedish university admits through one place: universityadmissions.se. You submit one application carrying up to four programmes, put in order of preference, and following that order you receive at most one offer.

Here is the costly misreading. Four choices are not four chances. They are a priority list: the system works down it until it reaches a programme where you are both eligible and admitted, then stops. Ranking is therefore the most consequential decision of your year — fill all four slots with equally competitive programmes and you can finish the cycle with nothing.

The mechanics are in our universityadmissions.se walkthrough, and the assessment in how Sweden handles Bangladeshi student applications.

A taught master's is not the only postgraduate route:

RouteHow you applyMoneyWho it suits
Taught master'suniversityadmissions.se, 15 October to 15 JanuaryFee-paying: 7,000 to 13,000 euro a yearA bachelor's in hand, a European degree in two years
Doctoral studyNot the portal — advertised like a jobSalaried; 12 to 18 months of permit afterResearch experience, a strong file
A second bachelor'sEnglish offer is narrowFull tuition, more yearsAlmost nobody

In Sweden a PhD really is a salaried position rather than a course you pay for — see a PhD in Sweden is a job, not a degree, and a second bachelor's versus a master's.

Eligibility is a question about credits, not years

This is where Bangladeshi applicants are least certain, and the rule is simpler than the anxiety suggests: Europe does not count the years on your certificate, it counts ECTS credits.

Your Bangladeshi degreeApproximate ECTSStanding for a European master's
Three-year pass degreearound 180The problem case — often not sufficient alone
Four-year honours degreearound 240Accepted almost everywhere
Three-year pass plus a one-year Bangladeshi master'sHigher, with more subject depthThe established, working fix

Most European master's programmes require at least 180 ECTS, so a four-year honours degree clears the bar comfortably and the worry attached to it is usually misplaced. Worry about a three-year pass degree is reasonable, and the standard answer is a one-year master's at home first — see three-year versus four-year bachelor degrees.

Where the assessment happens is also different. Documents go to the central portal, which evaluates for every university, and it keeps a separate instructions page for each country, Bangladesh included — stating not only which documents are needed but exactly how each must reach Sweden: some uploaded, some sent directly by the issuing institution. Treating that as a formality is how a file fails in December.

Start early on transcripts and certificates, course descriptions and syllabi and, for a National University or private degree, how those are treated in Europe. Good news: Bangladesh joined the Apostille Convention, in force 30 March 2025, and Sweden accepts an apostille — so you avoid the consular legalisation chain Denmark, Greece and Finland still require.

CGPA: the numbers that work, and the one nobody can promise

The honest starting point: no official universal CGPA conversion exists — anyone who tells you your 3.2 equals a precise European grade is estimating. What does exist is a working rule we see repeatedly in real files:

CGPA (on 4.0)What it means in practice
3.5 and aboveCompetitive for scholarships
Around 3.0The common threshold — most doors open
2.5 to 3.0Possible, but programmes must be chosen carefully

Treat that as a rule of thumb, not a regulation — see a low CGPA in Europe and CGPA and ECTS grade conversion.

Sweden adds a wrinkle: with only one round, a weaker CGPA cannot be offset by applying to more places later in the year. It has to be offset by programme selection and ranking — which is why the order of those four choices carries such weight.

Language: the MOI letter will not save you, and it fails late

The most expensive misconception about Sweden in this market: most Swedish universities do not accept a Bangladeshi MOI certificate. A letter from your college stating the medium of instruction was English does not work here, so IELTS — or an equivalent such as TOEFL — is effectively compulsory. At master's level we typically see 6.5 overall.

What makes the mistake expensive is timing. The student relying on an MOI letter usually discovers it does not work in December, with 15 January approaching, test dates full and results still needing time to arrive — and a test date is one of the few lines here you do not control.

The cost is worth knowing in advance. On 9 September 2026 IDP listed IELTS on Computer at BDT 29,600, a One Skill Retake at BDT 18,600, a remark at BDT 10,500 and a date change at BDT 3,000; paper IELTS ended in Bangladesh after 31 January 2026. See IELTS fees and test dates, a preparation plan, band 6 to 6.5 and IELTS requirements across Europe.

A practical rule: have your IELTS result before 15 October, not before 15 January. October to January is needed for sending and verifying documents, and you want room for a retake if the band comes in low.

The money, and the sequence that surprises everyone

Sweden asks the money question twice, and the order is unusual enough to break plans. Four figures matter, doing two different jobs.

FigureAmountShown, or spent?
Tuition (public, non-EU)7,000 to 13,000 euro a yearSpent
Living costs750 to 1,100 euro a monthSpent
Funds shown for the permitSEK 10,656 a month, roughly 960 euro (2026 level)Shown
First tuition instalmentSet by the universitySpent — before the permit application

Living costs break down to roughly 400 to 650 euro a month for accommodation, 230 to 330 for food, 50 to 75 for transport and 90 to 160 for everything else. Sweden's real currency is the Swedish krona; the euro figures are approximate.

No blocked account is required — you show the monthly amount in your own account. What replaces it is that sequence: a fee-payer must pay the first tuition instalment before the permit application can be made at all, so a large sum leaves the family before anyone knows whether the permit will be granted. See Sweden's proof of funds explained, what studying in Sweden costs and can you study in Sweden for free.

Add the Bangladesh-side spending no brochure mentions: roughly BDT 2 to 4 lakh for a single-country file, BDT 70,000 to 120,000 for a one-way ticket, BDT 10,000 to 30,000 for attestation and legalisation, BDT 4,000 to 9,000 for courier — none refundable if it fails.

Scholarships and tuition waivers at master's level

A timing trap catches people every year. Sweden's main funding routes — Swedish Institute programmes and the universities' own tuition waivers — are applied for separately, alongside or just after the admission application, with deadlines close to it. In practice, starting your scholarship search after 15 January is usually too late.

Master's level is where these are most realistic, because most schemes target postgraduates. See Swedish Institute scholarships, Nordic scholarships compared, writing a scholarship motivation letter and SOP versus motivation letter.

The timeline, counted backwards from 15 January

Sweden's calendar is not cruel, only inflexible. To someone who started the previous summer, 15 January is an ordinary date; to someone who began in December, a wall.

WhenWhat you do
Previous summerStart transcripts, certificates, course descriptions; book IELTS
September to early OctoberSit IELTS, get the result in hand
15 OctoberPortal opens — account, programme selection, ranking
October to DecemberSend and verify documents as the portal's Bangladesh page specifies
15 JanuaryApplications close
FebruaryScholarship and tuition-waiver applications
After an offerPay the first tuition instalment, then apply to Migrationsverket for the permit

The permit runs on its own clock. EU law sets a maximum of 90 days for a decision on a complete student application (Directive 2016/801), but the clock starts when the file is complete, not when it is submitted. See processing time, applying from Dhaka, entry requirements, intakes and deadlines and why files are refused.

After the degree: twelve months, and the residence mistake

A 12-month job-seeking residence permit is available after graduation, and 12 to 18 months for research or doctoral study — a real opportunity in the fields Sweden is short of.

But one hard fact belongs here: ordinary study years do not count towards permanent residence — only working years do, and citizenship now follows eight years of residence. If residence is the actual goal, a Swedish master's is the first step of a long path, not a shortcut.

Work during study is capped too: 15 hours a week during term, under the rule that took effect on 11 June 2026, relaxed over summer and for university-related work. Fifteen hours will not fund 750 to 1,100 euro a month, and exceeding the limit can cost the permit outright — see student work rules in Sweden.

Who should not do a master's in Sweden

Not every piece of advice suits every reader, and this section is deliberate.

  • Anyone holding only a three-year pass degree with nothing above it. Finish a one-year master's at home first.
  • Anyone planning to fund the degree by working. The 15-hour cap and Swedish living costs do not meet.
  • Anyone who cannot have an IELTS result by October. An MOI letter will not rescue the file, and the next round is twelve months away.
  • Anyone whose real objective is residence or work rather than study. A student permit is not a work route, and study years do not count towards settlement.
  • Anyone who would rank four equally competitive programmes. In a one-offer system that is the fastest path to no offer.
  • Anyone who cannot do the October-to-December document work. Sweden's rules are not merely strict, they are specific — how a document travels is half the test.

If one of those describes you, re-open the country decision: what Sweden is actually good for, Finland versus Sweden, Sweden versus Denmark, the three Nordic countries compared, a bachelor's abroad or a master's later, how European universities read a study gap and the Europe application timeline.

What to do next, in order

  1. 1Count your credits. Four-year honours: proceed. Three-year pass: decide on a Bangladeshi master's first.
  2. 2Book an IELTS date now, so the result is in hand before 15 October. Do not rely on an MOI letter.
  3. 3Collect the documents — transcripts, certificates, course descriptions — and check each against the portal's Bangladesh instructions.
  4. 4Choose four programmes and rank them honestly: what you genuinely want at the top, where eligibility is safe at the bottom.
  5. 5Treat scholarship deadlines as part of the admission deadline.
  6. 6Explain the payment sequence to your family early — the first tuition instalment falls due before the permit application.

Common questions

Does a Bangladeshi four-year honours degree qualify for a master's in Sweden?+

Generally yes. Europe measures a foreign degree in credits rather than years: a four-year honours degree is roughly 240 ECTS, and most European master's programmes ask for at least 180. The difficult case is the three-year pass degree, which sits near 180 ECTS but often does not stand on its own. The full comparison is in our guide to three-year versus four-year bachelor degrees.

What should I do if I only hold a three-year pass degree?+

The usual fix is to finish a one-year Bangladeshi master's first and then apply, which raises both your credit count and your subject depth. It costs a year, but it is far cheaper than a refusal — and in Sweden a refusal costs a whole cycle, because there is only one round.

When do applications open and close, and how many programmes can I choose?+

For the autumn intake the round opens on 15 October and closes on 15 January, entirely through universityadmissions.se. One application normally carries up to four programmes ranked in order of preference, and you receive at most one offer. Dates can shift slightly, so check the portal's key dates page yourself before you plan around them.

Do four choices mean four chances?+

No, and this is the most expensive misunderstanding in this market. It is one application with a priority list, not four separate applications. The system works down your ranking and stops at the programme where you are both eligible and admitted, so the order is a real decision rather than a formality. Filling all four slots with equally competitive programmes is the quickest route to no offer at all.

Will a Bangladeshi MOI letter work for Sweden?+

Usually not. Most Swedish universities do not accept an MOI certificate from Bangladesh, which makes IELTS or an equivalent test effectively compulsory. At master's level we typically see around 6.5 overall. Which universities across Europe do accept an MOI letter is covered here.

What does a master's in Sweden cost per year?+

Tuition at public universities for non-EU students is typically 7,000 to 13,000 euro a year, and living costs run 750 to 1,100 euro a month. For the permit you must show SEK 10,656 a month, roughly 960 euro at the 2026 level. Tuition and living costs are set in Swedish kronor, so the euro figures are approximate conversions.

Does Sweden require a blocked account?+

No. Unlike Germany, Sweden does not use a blocked account — you show the required monthly amount in your own account. In exchange there is an unusual sequence: fee-paying students must pay the first tuition instalment before they can apply for the residence permit at all.

Can I cover my living costs by working during the master's?+

No, and it is worth being blunt about it. A limit of 15 hours a week during term took effect on 11 June 2026, with the cap relaxed over the summer and for university-related work. Fifteen hours will not fund 750 to 1,100 euro a month, and breaking the limit can cost you the permit.

Can I stay in Sweden after graduating?+

Yes — a 12-month job-seeking residence permit is available after graduation, and 12 to 18 months for research or doctoral study. But ordinary study years do not count towards permanent residence; only working years do, and citizenship now follows eight years of residence. Sweden is not a fast route to settlement.

Sweden is in the EU and Schengen, so do I get a Schengen visa?+

No. You receive a national study residence permit, not a Schengen visa. The permit card allows short Schengen travel, but that is a separate thing and it gives you no right to study or work in another member state.
