A bachelor's abroad now, or a master's abroad later: the arithmetic

The two routes, priced

The living-cost line alone usually decides this. Two extra years abroad at EUR 800 a month is roughly EUR 19,200 before a single tuition euro.

The case for going after HSC

English-taught bachelor's degrees exist, but the list is short. Italy and Hungary have the deepest provision among our nine; Cyprus and Malta have workable options; Finland has a real but limited catalogue; Sweden and Denmark teach overwhelmingly in the local language at bachelor's level and in English at master's level. So the first question is not whether you want a bachelor's abroad, it is whether your subject is even offered in English at that level. Check that before anything else on our universities page.

Three or four years in-country is a genuine advantage if you intend to stay. You will speak the language, you will have local internships on your CV, and you will meet employers before you are competing for a job with a twelve-month permit ticking down.

The case for a master's later

Cost. Two fewer years abroad is the single largest saving available in this entire decision, and it comes with no loss of degree quality.

Scholarship density. The best-funded opportunities in Europe are master's-level: Erasmus Mundus joint master's degrees, the Swedish Institute awards, most university-level waivers in Finland and Sweden. A student who is not competitive today may be competitive with a completed bachelor's and a clear specialisation. See Erasmus Mundus from Bangladesh.

A fallback that actually exists. If the visa is refused, if the family's finances change, if you decide against it — you still hold a Bangladeshi degree and a life here. A student who leaves at 18 and has to return at 20 has neither.

Maturity. This is real and rarely said. Moving alone to a country where you do not speak the language, at 18, straight out of HSC, is hard. Some students thrive on it. Others do not, and the failure is expensive.

The trap in the master's route

⚠️ A three-year Bangladeshi pass degree may not meet a European master's entry requirement. Most European master's programmes expect the equivalent of a four-year bachelor's or 240 ECTS credits, and a three-year pass degree frequently falls short. A four-year honours degree usually satisfies it.

This is the single most common reason a well-planned master's application fails at the eligibility stage, and it is entirely foreseeable at the point you choose your Bangladeshi degree. If a European master's is your plan, enrol in a four-year honours programme, not a three-year pass programme. Who should choose what

Go after HSC if your family can genuinely fund three or four years abroad, your subject is taught in English at bachelor's level in a country you want, you have a realistic shot at Stipendium Hungaricum or Italy's income-assessed route, or you are certain you want to build your life in Europe rather than return.

Do the bachelor's here if funding is tight, you want the wider English-taught choice and the better-funded scholarships that exist at master's level, you want a fallback that survives a refusal, or you are not yet sure enough about the destination to commit four years to it.

Either way, do these three things now: enrol in a four-year honours degree if you stay, keep every transcript and mark sheet from day one, and build the English score early rather than in the final panic.
