Your HSC is enough for a Greek bachelor's. The paperwork clock is what will stop you

Yes, an HSC is enough. Greece asks for twelve years of schooling behind a bachelor's applicant, an HSC is twelve years, and no Greek university requires a Bangladeshi school-leaver to sit out a year or buy a foundation course first. If you have been told otherwise, ask which university published that rule — the only authority on it is the programme page you intend to apply to.

What stops HSC leavers is not the certificate. It is the clock. A Greek file runs on a chain of paperwork that has to begin months before the university deadline you are watching, and only one link in that chain publishes a duration at all. That gap is this page's subject, because getting it wrong costs a year rather than a document.

Twelve years, and when the certificate really is the problem

An HSC is twelve years of schooling, and so is an Alim or a set of A-Levels. That is the standard a European bachelor's is built on, and Greece is not unusual here: a bachelor's in Europe after HSC is the cross-Europe version.

An SSC is ten years, and ten years opens a bachelor's nowhere among the nine countries we work with. The two get blurred constantly by people selling the trip. The honest answer after SSC reaches a different conclusion, and if that is your situation, read it instead of this one.

A foundation or pathway year is the other thing sold hard to school-leavers. Greece does not require one from someone who already meets a programme's published entry criteria. Sometimes a pathway year is a reasonable purchase and often it is not — is a pathway year worth it works through which is which. Buying one to solve a problem you do not have costs a year and a fee.

So where does an HSC leaver actually fail in Greece? Almost never on the certificate — on the programme's language, the money sequence, or the calendar. All three are below, and the third is the one nobody warns you about.

The language question comes first, because it decides whether Greece is possible at all

Most public university degrees in Greece are taught in Greek. English-taught study exists, but it is a named catalogue of specific programmes, not the Greek system with the language swapped out. For a school-leaver that reshapes the question: you are not picking Greece and then a subject, you are checking whether your subject appears on a narrow list, and only then deciding about Greece.

Do that check on the university's own page first — checking that a programme is really taught in English explains what to look for. The trade-off is in English-taught versus local-language programmes, and the day-to-day question in how much Greek you need. We have written up the University of Athens and Aristotle University of Thessaloniki in detail.

On test scores, be careful with anyone quoting a number as fact. Greece publishes no national English requirement for international students. Across the programmes we deal with, the floor we observe is about 5.5 and the typical ask is 6.0, while English-medium programmes commonly publish 6.5. Those are our observations from programme pages, not a national rule, and nobody — including us — should present them as one. Whether a medium of instruction letter works instead is decided programme by programme: the MOI certificate and which universities accept an MOI letter. IELTS on Computer was listed in Bangladesh at BDT 29,600 on 9 September 2026, One Skill Retake at BDT 18,600IELTS from Bangladesh.

Keep two questions apart. "Does Greece accept my HSC" is about years of schooling. "Can I go without IELTS" is about the language a programme is taught in. Different answers, and conflating them is the commonest error here — study in Europe without IELTS is where the second belongs.

The apostille that does not work, and the chain that replaces it

Bangladesh joined the Apostille Convention, in force since 30 March 2025. Greece objected under Article 12, as did Denmark and Finland. An objection means the Convention does not operate between the two countries at all, so an apostille buys you nothing for Greece and the full consular legalisation chain still applies. Italy, Cyprus, Hungary, Malta, Sweden and Bulgaria do accept one. Both halves are load-bearing, and versions circulating locally get one or the other wrong: Bangladesh's apostille and the countries that refuse it and the attestation order that matters.

The chain is sequential, which is the part that costs time. Documents are collected, verified by the education board where that applies, translated where required, and attested in the correct order — and a document attested out of order has to be redone from the start: collecting transcripts and certificates, education board verification, notary, magistrate or MOFA and certified translation in Dhaka.

Underneath sit the identity documents that quietly sink files, and at eighteen they are often not ready: a name spelled differently across your documents, the 17-digit digital birth certificate, the e-passport and police clearance. Each is a separate queue, and none can be started the week before a deadline.

The calendar, which is the real subject of this page

The honest shape of a Greek timeline: one segment has a published maximum, and the other three do not.

SegmentWho controls itPublished duration? What to do about it
University application and offerThe universityDeadline published; decision time usually notRead the programme page; ask the international office
Qualification evaluationThe institution assessing your HSCNoAsk the international office in writing
Consular legalisation chainBangladeshi authorities, then the consular stepNo, and it runs in sequenceStart it the day your documents are issued
Visa decisionThe Greek embassy in New DelhiYes — a maximum of 90 days for a complete file, under EU Directive 2016/801Count back from your start date; an incomplete file starts no clock

Submission and biometrics happen at the Greek visa application centre in Dhaka, open since February 2026. The decision is made in New Delhi and your file travels there by courier, so you avoid the trip but not the Delhi leg: where Bangladeshi students apply for a Greek visa and Dhaka or Delhi.

Now the dates. Greek intakes are October and February.

If you are starting inYour file must be COMPLETE byBecause
OctoberEarly JulyThe maximum allowed for a decision on a complete file — and a maximum is not a typical
FebruaryEarly NovemberThe same arithmetic, on the spring intake

Read that as a last date, not a target. If you begin your paperwork in July for an October start, you are already late — not for the university, whose deadline may well still be open, but for the file behind it. That is the trap this page exists to name: students time everything off the university deadline, which governs only the application, while legalisation and the qualification evaluation run underneath it on their own longer, unpublished clock.

The rule that follows is simple: start the document chain when your HSC certificate and transcript are issued, not when you find a programme you like. Plan against the month-by-month timeline and offer to boarding pass, with country detail in Greece's intakes and deadlines and visa processing time, and count the courier leg.

Applying while your HSC result is still pending

These are two separate questions, and keeping them apart helps.

Whether a university will consider a pending or provisional result is that university's decision, published on its own page — ask the international office, not an agent. The other half is not in doubt: the legalisation chain runs on documents as issued. A provisional certificate does not carry that chain, so the slowest part of your file cannot start until your final documents exist. Waiting therefore costs more in Greece than where the paperwork is lighter.

The cross-Europe version is applying while you wait for your HSC result. Spend the waiting months on what does not need the result: the passport, the birth certificate, the name-mismatch fix, police clearance, the English test and the money trail.

The money, and the item that breaks Greek budgets

LinePlan for
Public university tuitionEUR 1,500 to 4,000 per year
RentEUR 200 to 380 per month
FoodEUR 150 to 230 per month
TransportEUR 25 to 40 per month
OtherEUR 60 to 110 per month
Living costs, totalEUR 450 to 700 per month
Funds to evidencearound EUR 7,200 per year

The legal minimum is EUR 400 a month, which is EUR 4,800 a year, but consulates in practice look for EUR 600 to 700 a month — which is why the planning figure is EUR 7,200 and not the legal floor. Greece does not use a blocked account, so the money sits in an ordinary account and the evidence decides: proof of funds for Greece, what the officer reads in a bank statement, the solvency certificate and sponsors and affidavits.

Then the item families do not see coming: at least one third of tuition must be paid before the visa. Money budgeted for after arrival has to move months earlier. On top of that, the Bangladesh-side spend runs roughly BDT 3 to 5 lakh where the file is decided in Delhi — attestation, translation and legalisation BDT 10,000 to 30,000, courier BDT 4,000 to 9,000, a one-way ticket BDT 70,000 to 120,000. None of it comes back if the visa is refused. Full arithmetic in what studying in Greece costs and tuition fees in Greece; city numbers in Athens and Thessaloniki. Read scholarships for Greece, honestly before counting on them.

Who should not do this

If you need to earn from the first month, this is the wrong plan. A non-EU student in Greece must obtain a separate work authorisation, because the student permit does not itself grant the right to work — and Greece publishes no student work-hours figure at all, so there is no number to build a budget on. Anyone who quotes you one has invented it, and a school-leaver planning to fund the year from part-time work is exactly who that invented number hurts: student work rules in Greece and a student visa is not a work permit.

If your family cannot document around EUR 7,200 and move a third of tuition before departure, this is the wrong plan this year. Not forever — but a file built on money that arrives later is the commonest way this route fails, and the Bangladesh-side spend is gone whether the visa comes or not. Why an inflated bank statement gets caught explains why the obvious shortcut is worse than waiting a year.

If your subject has no English-taught programme in Greece, this is the wrong country, and no amount of file preparation changes it. Check the catalogue before committing to anything else.

And if your intake is close with nothing legalised yet, aim at the next one. A rushed file is the one that gets refused — why Greek student visas are refused — and a refusal costs you the money and the intake.

The honest unknowns

Four things here are genuinely not published, and anyone quoting them confidently is guessing.

  • Student work hours. Greece publishes no figure. The Hellenic Ministry of Migration and Asylum issues the work authorisation and is the authority that answers this; your university's international office is the practical second source.
  • How long the legalisation chain takes end to end. No authority publishes a turnaround for the full sequence. The only defence is starting early and in the right order.
  • How long a qualification evaluation takes. The institution assessing your HSC answers this. Ask its international office in writing before building a plan on it.
  • Visa success or refusal rates. No authority produces one, for Greece or anywhere: what the Schengen refusal number actually measures.

One more number before you plan a life rather than a degree: study years count only 50 per cent towards the five-year clock for long-term residence, while working years count in full.

What to do first

  1. 1Check that an English-taught programme exists in your subject, on the university's own page. If not, compare countries instead — Greece versus Italy and what Greece is actually good for.
  2. 2Start collecting and legalising documents the day your final HSC papers are issued, in the correct order.
  3. 3Fix the identity documents now: the name spelling, the birth certificate, the passport.
  4. 4Build money evidence towards roughly EUR 7,200, and budget separately for the third of tuition due before the visa.
  5. 5Count back 90 days from October or February and treat that as your deadline, not the university's.

Common questions

Can I go to Greece for a bachelor's degree straight after HSC?+

Yes. An HSC is twelve years of schooling, which is the school-leaving standard a European bachelor's is built on, and Greece does not require a Bangladeshi school-leaver to wait a year first. What decides your application is the individual programme's published entry criteria, not a national rule, and the practical obstacle is the paperwork timeline rather than the certificate.

Do I need a foundation or pathway year for Greece?+

Not if you already meet the published entry criteria of the programme you are applying to. A foundation year is the most over-sold product in this market and is frequently recommended to students who do not need one. Read the programme's own entry page before you pay for anything, and treat a pathway year as a purchase to justify rather than a default step.

Does an apostille work for a Greek student visa?+

No. Bangladesh joined the Apostille Convention and it came into force on 30 March 2025, but Greece objected under Article 12, as did Denmark and Finland. An objection means the Convention does not operate between the two countries at all, so Greece still requires the full consular legalisation chain. Italy, Cyprus, Hungary, Malta, Sweden and Bulgaria do accept an apostille.

When do I have to start the paperwork for an October start?+

Earlier than the university deadline suggests. EU Directive 2016/801 allows a maximum of 90 days for a decision on a complete file, which puts a complete file in early July for an October start and early November for February. That is a last date, not a target, because the legalisation chain and the qualification evaluation in front of it publish no duration at all. Start the document chain the day your final HSC papers are issued.

What IELTS score does Greece require after HSC?+

Greece publishes no national English requirement for international students. Across the programmes we deal with, the floor we observe is about 5.5 and the typical ask is 6.0, while English-medium programmes commonly publish 6.5. Those are our observations from programme pages, not a national rule, and nobody should quote them as one. The programme page is the only authority.

Can I apply while my HSC result is still pending?+

Whether a university will consider a pending or provisional result is that university's decision and is published on its own page, so ask its international office. The legalisation chain is the separate half, and it runs on documents as issued, so the slowest part of your file cannot start until your final certificate and transcript exist. Use the waiting months on the passport, the birth certificate and the money trail instead.

How much money do I need to show for Greece?+

Plan around EUR 7,200 for the year. The legal minimum is EUR 400 a month, which is EUR 4,800 a year, but consulates in practice look for EUR 600 to 700 a month. Greece does not use a blocked account, so the money sits in an ordinary account and the quality of the evidence matters more than the balance.

Do I really have to pay tuition before the visa?+

At least one third of it, yes. This is the single item that most often breaks a Greek budget, because families plan to pay after arrival. Treat it as a pre-departure cost on top of the funds you must evidence, and remember that the Bangladesh-side spend of roughly BDT 3 to 5 lakh is not refundable if the visa is refused.

How many hours a week can I work as a student in Greece?+

Greece publishes no student work-hours figure, so there is no number to plan against and anyone who quotes you one has invented it. What is published is the structure: a non-EU student must obtain a separate work authorisation, because the student permit does not itself grant the right to work. The Hellenic Ministry of Migration and Asylum is the authority, and your university's international office is the practical second source.

Do I have to travel to New Delhi to apply?+

No. The Greek visa application centre in Dhaka opened in February 2026 and submission and biometrics happen there. The decision is still made by the Greek embassy in New Delhi and your file travels there by courier, so you avoid the trip but not the Delhi leg of the timeline.

Is Greece a good choice if I want to settle there afterwards?+

Be careful with the arithmetic. Study years count only 50 per cent towards the five-year clock for long-term residence, while working years count in full, so a degree does not move you through that clock at the speed people assume. Choose Greece for the degree and the cost, and treat anything after it as a separate decision to research on its own.
