The query "greece student working hours" has a clean answer on a dozen agency websites and no clean answer on a Greek government one. That gap is the whole subject of this article.
Our own dataset records Greece as permitting part-time work under specified conditions, and it says that instead of a number on purpose. Greece consolidated its migration law into a new code that took effect in 2024, replacing the framework most older guides are still describing, and the entitlement to work is not presented as a headline weekly figure of the kind Finland (about thirty hours) or Sweden (fifteen, from 11 June 2026) publish. So we are not going to hand you one.
What we can do is more useful than a number, because the number is not what stops most students from working in Greece anyway.

The obstacle that comes before the hours
Almost every article about working in Greece starts with hours. Start instead with two acronyms, because they decide whether you can be employed at all.
AFM is your Greek tax registration number, obtained from the tax authority. AMKA is your social security number, obtained through a citizen service centre or the social security body. No lawful employer in Greece can put you on a payroll without both. A student who has neither is not in a grey area on hours — they simply cannot be employed, whatever the residence permit says.
You will also need a Greek bank account for salary payment, and opening one usually requires the AFM first. So the real sequence is:

Every one of those steps involves an office, a queue and a document you did not know you needed. Assume the chain takes a substantial part of your first semester, and plan your money as though you will earn nothing in it.
Ask about the receipt specifically
When you file a residence permit application in Greece you are typically given a confirmation that the application is pending, which keeps your stay lawful while the card is produced. Students very often assume that because they may lawfully stay, they may lawfully work.
Those are separate permissions and you should ask about them separately, in those words, at the directorate that issued the receipt. Getting this wrong is not a payroll error; undeclared work risks the permit itself. Ask, get the answer in writing if you can, and keep it.
What the language actually does
Greek is the constraint that most affects what you can earn, and it is a heavier one than students expect, because it comes with a different alphabet before it comes with a vocabulary.
For most customer-facing work in Athens or Thessaloniki — retail, cafés, reception, anything involving a conversation with a member of the public — Greek is close to a requirement. What is genuinely open to an English speaker is narrower: kitchen and back-of-house work, delivery, warehouse work, and university jobs such as research or laboratory assistance if your department has them.
Seasonal tourism work on the islands does run in English, and it is real. It is also seasonal, it is a long way from your university, and it collides with a term timetable. It is a summer plan, not a term-time one.

What we will not tell you
We will not publish a Greek hours figure, an hourly rate, or an expected monthly income. The first because Greece does not publish it as one number and a guess would be a fabrication a reader could act on. The second and third because a wage figure written here would be quoted back at us as a promise, and because multiplying a rate by hours we have just declined to state would be arithmetic on top of nothing.

What to do next

- 3Ask your university's international office which of these steps it helps with. Some Greek universities do a great deal of it for you and some do none, and it is worth knowing which before you arrive.
