Which Greek universities are actually worth applying to from Bangladesh

The short answer

There is no single best Greek university for a Bangladeshi student, and the ranking you were about to search for cannot produce one. A world ranking is built from research output, citations and reputation surveys among academics — none of which changes what you pay, whether you can follow the lectures, or whether your certificates clear the ministry in time.

For Greece, one fact reorders everything else, and it is the fact this market is quietest about. Teaching at Greek public universities is overwhelmingly in Greek. English-taught provision is real but narrow, concentrated at master's and doctoral level. So the honest form of your question is not which Greek university is best, but which institutions run an English-taught programme in your subject at all — a far smaller door than most families are shown.

Once you accept that, four checks decide almost the whole outcome.

  1. 1Is that specific programme genuinely taught in English? Not the catalogue somewhere — the one course you would enrol on, and the language it is assessed in.
  2. 2What does Greece's fee structure do to its price? English-taught public tuition runs about EUR 1,500 to 4,000 a year, and at least a third is paid before the visa file is lodged.
  3. 3Which scholarship body covers it, and is that deadline reachable from Dhaka?
  4. 4What is the institution's own deadline, and the slow step behind it? Greece has no national application portal, so every date is the university's own.

Why this is one page and not fifteen

Some sites run a separate page for every Greek institution with a recognisable name. We do not. When we measured what Bangladeshi students actually type, each institution name drew one or two searches, and the question underneath them was the same. Fifteen thin pages serve nobody; one page organised by the variables that decide the outcome serves everyone.

The language question, because it sets the shortlist

A change in Greek law now permits public universities to run fee-paying foreign-language programmes for non-EU students, and a number now exist. That is genuinely good news. What gets left out is the scale: the list is short, it changes from year to year, and each university publishes its own. There is no single national list you can rely on.

Neither route is wrong; choosing without knowing which one you are in is what costs a year and a lot of money. The commonest failure in this market is an applicant who believed a degree was taught in English when it was not, so check the language of instruction and the language of assessment separately — they are not always the same line. The method is in checking that a programme is really taught in English, the wider choice in English-taught or local-language programmes, and the much smaller question of daily life in how much Greek you really need.

On the test itself, our country guide records Greek programmes commonly asking around IELTS 5.5 to 6.0, and English-medium programmes frequently 6.5. Treat that as our observation of what programmes ask, never as a national rule — Greece publishes none. See IELTS requirements by European country and which universities accept an MOI letter.

The two Greek institutions we cover in depth

Two, not twenty. That is not a gap in our coverage — it is what the English-taught door actually looks like from Bangladesh, and any list of fifteen Greek universities for international students is padding.

UniversityCityGenuinely strong inCity cost levelOur deeper guide
Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (AUTH)ThessalonikiEngineering, physics, geology, biology and informatics, classics and archaeology; medicine and health sciences, taught in GreekThe lower of the two — well below AthensAristotle University
National and Kapodistrian University of Athens (NKUA)AthensMedicine, including an English-language medical degree, plus law, sciences, philosophy, theology, economics and educationThe higher of the two — a capital cityUniversity of Athens

AUTH is the largest university in Greece and the one most often misrepresented here, always the same way: an English-taught bachelor's degree that does not exist for the subject being sold. NKUA is the oldest, and its English-language medical degree is heavily marketed. Both are serious institutions, and both deserve checking on their own websites rather than in a brochure.

City cost level is a position, not a price. The country-wide band is EUR 450 to 700 a month, and the month-by-month figures are in the Athens and Thessaloniki cost guides. Across a two-year master's, where your city sits inside that band moves the total far more than anything a ranking measures.

Public, private, and what private actually means here

In Greece this question is not the one it is elsewhere, and getting it wrong is expensive.

The public universities are the state system: low tuition, the Greek-language weight, and qualifications the state recognises as a matter of course. Private colleges in Greece more often deliver a degree awarded by a foreign institution, usually British or American, through a partnership. That can be perfectly legitimate, but it moves the accreditation question: what matters is not the campus in Athens, it is who awards the degree and whether that award is recognised where you intend to use it — in Greece, elsewhere in the EU, or back in Bangladesh.

Ask for the awarding body's name in writing, then verify it with that body, not with the campus. The method is in checking a private university or college, and the offer letter itself in checking that an offer letter is genuine.

How to check any Greek institution yourself

Most readers will consider an institution we have not written about, so here is the method rather than a longer list. Five checks, each able to end the conversation on its own.

The checkWhat it changesWhere the answer lives
Language of instruction and assessmentWhether you can do the degree at allThe programme's own page
Fee and the one-third ruleEUR 1,500 to 4,000 a year, a third of it paid earlyThe programme's fee page
Scholarship body and its deadlineWhether the year is affordableThe scheme's own page
The institution's own deadlineWhether you reach the October or February intakeThe department, in writing
State recognitionWhether the degree is worth anything afterwardsThe Ministry of Education

1. The language, checked on the programme page

Covered above. It is first because it is the only check that can make the other four irrelevant.

2. The fee, and the third you pay before anyone has approved you

English-taught public tuition sits at about EUR 1,500 to 4,000 a year, and Greek-taught public degrees carry little or none. But Greek institutions generally require at least one third of the tuition paid up front before issuing the enrolment certificate your visa file needs. So the sequence is pay, get the certificate, apply, and only then learn whether the visa is granted — that money moves before an embassy has looked at you. Get the refund policy for a visa refusal in writing first. The detail is in tuition fees in Greece and the whole budget in what studying in Greece costs.

3. Who actually pays, and whether you can reach them

Greek scholarship provision for a non-EU applicant is thinner than the advertising suggests, and the state body, IKY, is not the open door it is presented as. Read scholarships for studying in Greece before building a plan around one, and how to read a scholarship advertisement before believing a percentage. If no scheme covers you Greece can still work, because the tuition is low enough that it often does — but know that before you apply, not after.

4. The deadline, and the slow step behind it

Greece has no central application portal. You apply directly to the university, so every deadline is the institution's own and you must get it in writing from the department. Intakes are October, the main one, and February.

The step that actually loses people a year is not the university's. It is recognition of your Bangladeshi certificates by the Greek Ministry of Education, a separate process on its own clock. Start it early, alongside the Bangladesh-side steps that also take months — transcripts and certificates, attestation and legalisation, three-year pass versus four-year honours and the timeline from offer to boarding pass.

⚠️ Bangladesh's apostille does not work for Greece. Greece objected under Article 12, as did Denmark and Finland, so the full consular legalisation chain still applies. Italy, Cyprus, Hungary, Malta, Sweden and Bulgaria do accept one: the countries that refuse it.

5. State recognition, and where to check it

For a public university this is normally settled, but check it when a name is unfamiliar, and always for a private college. The national authority is the Greek Ministry of Education, at minedu.gov.gr, and the state's own service for international students is Study in Greece, at studyingreece.edu.gr. If an institution appears in neither and its awarding body cannot be verified independently, you have your answer, whatever the campus looks like in the photographs.

The money the ranking never shows you

WhatFigure from our country guide
Public tuition, English-taughtEUR 1,500 to 4,000 a year
Living costsEUR 450 to 700 a month
RentEUR 200 to 380 a month
FoodEUR 150 to 230 a month
TransportEUR 25 to 40 a month
OtherEUR 60 to 110 a month
Funds to evidenceAbout EUR 7,200 a year

Three numbers get confused on the funds line. The legal minimum is EUR 400 a month, or EUR 4,800 a year; consulates in practice look for EUR 600 to 700 a month; we tell families to plan around EUR 7,200 a year. Greece uses no blocked account, so nothing testifies on your behalf and the paperwork is the only evidence. The Bangladesh-side spend runs roughly BDT 3 to 5 lakh for a file decided in New Delhi, none of it refundable: where Bangladeshi students apply for a Greek visa.

If you are choosing on prestige, please read this paragraph twice

For most Bangladeshi students applying to Greece, the binding constraints are money and timing, not reputation. A more famous name does not lower the fee, move the ministry faster, or make an unreachable scholarship deadline reachable. What it reliably does is put you in the more expensive city.

The failure looks the same every year. Someone picks the best-known institution, discovers in March that its English-taught catalogue does not include their subject, switches to a programme they did not want, lands in Athens instead of Thessaloniki, and misses the scholarship call that closed while the certificates were still with the ministry. Every step of that was avoidable, and none of it was a ranking problem.

Who Greece is the wrong country for

Three readers should look elsewhere.

If you need a broad English-taught bachelor's catalogue, Greece is a poor fit and Italy is the honest comparison: cheaper tuition here, a much deeper English catalogue there. That trade-off is the whole of Greece versus Italy; the cost ranking across all nine is the nine countries ranked by real cost.

If your plan depends on working your way through, be careful. A non-EU student in Greece needs a work authorisation — it is not work from day one — and Greece publishes no weekly hours figure at all, so any site quoting one has invented it. On the five-year residence clock, study years count at fifty percent and working years in full. See student work rules in Greece.

If you are aiming at a regulated profession, a degree is not a licence. Medicine, dentistry, pharmacy, psychology, law and teaching each need registration with their own authority, in Greece or in Bangladesh, with their own examinations and language rules. Settle that before you enrol, not after six years — the NKUA guide sets out the chain.

What to do this week

  1. 1Write down your subject, then find the English-taught programmes in it — programmes, not universities.
  2. 2Open each programme page and confirm the language of instruction and of assessment.
  3. 3Email the department for the deadline and the fee, in writing.
  4. 4Start the Ministry of Education recognition of your certificates now, in parallel.
  5. 5Only then compare the two cities, using the cost guides rather than a ranking.

Common questions

Which is the best university in Greece for Bangladeshi students?+

There is no single answer, and anyone who gives you one has not asked what you want to study. Because teaching at Greek public universities is overwhelmingly in Greek, the useful question is which institutions run an English-taught programme in your subject at all. Start from the programme, not the institution. We cover two Greek universities in depth, Aristotle University of Thessaloniki and the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, and both are linked above.

Can I do a bachelor's degree in English in Greece?+

Sometimes, but the catalogue is short. A change in Greek law now allows public universities to run fee-paying foreign-language programmes for non-EU students, and a number now exist, but English-taught provision is still concentrated at master's and doctoral level. The list changes from year to year and each university publishes its own. If someone shows you an English-taught bachelor's degree, ask for the link on the university's own site and open it yourself.

How much does a Greek university cost a Bangladeshi student?+

English-taught tuition at a Greek public university runs about EUR 1,500 to 4,000 a year, among the lowest in the eurozone, and Greek-taught public degrees carry little or none. Living costs run EUR 450 to 700 a month across the country. The figure that surprises families is not the size of the fee but its timing: at least one third is normally paid before the enrolment certificate is issued for your visa file.

Why do I have to pay tuition before I get the visa?+

Because the enrolment certificate is a required document in the Greek student visa file, and Greek institutions generally will not issue it until at least a third of the tuition is paid. So the order is pay, then get the certificate, then apply, then find out. Get the institution's refund policy for a visa refusal in writing before the money leaves Bangladesh, because policies differ and some say nothing at all.

Does Greece have a central application portal like Italy or Sweden?+

No. You apply directly to the university, which means every deadline is the institution's own and you should get it from the department in writing rather than from a third party. Intakes are October, which is the main one, and February. The step that most often costs a year is not the university's decision but the Greek Ministry of Education's recognition of your certificates, so start that early and in parallel.

How do I know a Greek private college is legitimate?+

Ask who awards the degree. Private colleges in Greece often deliver a qualification awarded by a foreign institution, usually British or American, through a partnership, so the campus in Athens is not the thing being accredited. Get the awarding body's name in writing and verify it with that body directly, not with the college. Our checklist for doing that is linked in the private-college section above.

What IELTS score do Greek universities want?+

Our country guide records programmes commonly asking around 5.5 to 6.0, with English-medium programmes frequently at 6.5. Treat that as our observation of what individual programmes ask, not as a national rule, because Greece does not publish one. The requirement that binds you is the one printed on your programme's page, and some programmes accept a medium-of-instruction letter instead.

How much money do I need to show for a Greek student visa?+

Plan around EUR 7,200 for the year. The legal minimum is EUR 400 a month, which is EUR 4,800 a year, but consulates in practice look for EUR 600 to 700 a month. Greece uses no blocked account, so nothing vouches for the money on your behalf and the documents are the only evidence. Tuition is a separate calculation on top of that.

Can I use an apostille on my documents for Greece?+

No. Bangladesh joined the Apostille Convention with effect from 30 March 2025, but Greece objected under Article 12, as did Denmark and Finland, so the Convention does not operate between Bangladesh and Greece and the full consular legalisation chain still applies. Italy, Cyprus, Hungary, Malta, Sweden and Bulgaria do accept an apostille, which is why the same document behaves differently depending on where you send it.

How many hours a week can I work as a student in Greece?+

Greece publishes no weekly hours figure, so we will not give you one and neither should anybody else. What is established is that a non-EU student needs a work authorisation, so it is not work from the first day, and that on the five-year residence clock study years count at fifty percent while working years count in full. Build your budget on the funds you can evidence, not on income you are assuming.
