What Greece is actually good for, and the question to ask before you choose it

Who Greece genuinely suits

The student who wants an EU degree at close to the lowest total cost. Tuition on English-taught programmes is among the lowest in the eurozone, and living in Thessaloniki or Patras costs a fraction of Copenhagen or Stockholm. The degree carries exactly the same EU recognition. Greece markets itself far less aggressively than its neighbours, which is most of the reason it is overlooked rather than any weakness in the qualification.

The student going into shipping, maritime or tourism. Greece has a world-leading merchant fleet and one of Europe's largest tourism sectors, and its academic programmes in both are backed by actual industry rather than a prospectus. If your field is one of those, Greece is not the cheap option — it is the right option.

The student with a classical or archaeological subject. Nowhere else on this list can teach these fields on top of the material itself.

The student whose IELTS came in at 5.5. Several Greek institutions accept a Medium of Instruction certificate or run their own English assessment, so the door is not automatically closed the way it is in Sweden.

Universities such as Aristotle University of Thessaloniki have long histories and full EU accreditation, and Thessaloniki itself is a genuine student city at a genuine student price.

The question to ask before you choose Greece

What is your plan for the two years after graduation?

If the answer is "come back to Bangladesh with an EU degree" or "apply for a Master's or a job elsewhere in the EU using Schengen mobility", Greece is one of the best-value decisions available to you.

If the answer is "stay in the country and work", be careful. Greece's graduate job market is weaker than Northern Europe's, youth unemployment has historically been high, and post-study residence routes are less clearly defined than Denmark's three-year permit or Finland's two-year one. Outside the tourist economy, most part-time and graduate work also expects Greek. That is not a reason to rule Greece out. It is a reason to be honest about which of the two plans you actually have.

Money, with the trap named

Budgeting to the legal minimum is the mistake here. The law says EUR 400 a month and the consulate asks for more, so a file built on EUR 4,800 is a file built to be questioned. Plan on about EUR 7,200. There is no blocked account.

One more: Greece is one of the three countries — with Finland and Denmark — that objected under Article 12 when Bangladesh joined the Apostille Convention on 30 March 2025. An apostille does not work for a Greek file and the full consular legalisation chain still applies.

Where you would actually live

Athens has the largest catalogue and the highest rent. Thessaloniki is the classic student city — a large university, lower costs, a real student population — and Patras is cheaper again. The gap between Athens and everywhere else is the single biggest lever on a Greek budget, and unlike tuition it is entirely your choice.

Part-time work follows the same geography. In tourist areas and in the summer season, English is often enough. Outside them, and outside the season, most work expects Greek. A budget built on year-round earnings is a budget built on learning the language, so decide which of those two you are actually planning.

Do not choose Greece if

1. 1Your plan depends on working in Greece after you graduate. This is the single honest reason to choose somewhere else.
2. 2You need a wide English-taught catalogue. Provision is real and growing, and still narrower than Italy's.
3. 3You want an established Bangladeshi student community. Eurostat counted 8 Bangladeshi students in Greek tertiary education in 2024, the smallest of the nine. That is a count of enrolment, not of anyone's success rate — but it does mean arriving without a network.
4. 4You budgeted the legal minimum funds figure. Build the file on about EUR 7,200.
5. 5You planned an apostille and a fast document timeline. Greece needs the full consular chain.
