A master's in Greece from Bangladesh: the widest English door Greece has, and the slowest clock

Md. Salahuddin 11 min read Last reviewed: 2026-09-19Choosing a country

If you are considering a master's in Greece from Bangladesh, one fact should set the order of every decision that follows. Most public teaching in Greece happens in Greek. But at postgraduate level the programmes taught in English are real, specific and noticeably more numerous than at bachelor level.

That is Greece's least advertised piece of good news: the door that is effectively shut to most Bangladeshi school-leavers genuinely opens for graduates.

Now the honest part. Widest is not wide. This is a named list of programmes, not a version of the Greek university system with the language swapped out. Which makes the first question something other than the one most people ask.

The question is not whether you can study in Greece. It is whether a programme exists in your subject.

Start with the programme, not the country

The subjects where Greece is most often studied — business, tourism and hospitality, computer science, engineering, and shipping and maritime — are the sensible places to begin. Shipping and maritime deserves particular mention: it is Greece's own industry, and the case for studying it there is about more than price.

But do not reason your way to a conclusion. Look at the programme on the university's own page. An agent's list or a rankings site is not evidence: the English-taught claim is the one most misrepresented in this market. Read checking that a programme is really taught in English and English-taught versus local-language programmes before you start searching, not after.

For where to look, the best universities in Greece is the overview, with the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens and Aristotle University of Thessaloniki written up individually. Whether the country suits you at all is the job of what Greece is actually good for.

If your subject has no English-taught programme, Greece is the wrong country, and that single sentence can save a family several months and several lakh taka.

Eligibility is measured in credits, not years

This is where a master's applicant differs from a school-leaver. You already hold a degree, so the entire question becomes what that degree is worth here — and that is measured in credits.

Europe counts ECTS credits, a measure of how much study was done rather than how long it took. A three-year bachelor's is roughly 180 ECTS and a four-year roughly 240, and most European master's programmes require at least 180.

So a Bangladeshi four-year honours degree travels almost everywhere — an advantage, not merely something tolerated. The three-year pass degree is the problem case, and the arithmetic is not the whole story: 180 clears a 180 bar on paper, but evaluators place a Bangladeshi pass degree below honours. The usual fix is already available to most applicants — a one-year Bangladeshi master's on top, which lifts the file above the honours line.

The full working is in three-year pass versus four-year honours, and if the degree is from the National University or a private university, that question has its own answer. At master's level you will usually also be asked for course descriptions and syllabi so the institution can compare what you studied against its own curriculum — collecting these early saves weeks later.

On grades, no official universal conversion exists between a Bangladeshi CGPA and a European one, so treat a precise conversion as a warning sign. The working rule: 3.0 on a 4.0 scale is a common threshold, 3.5 and above competitive for scholarships, 2.5 to 3.0 means choosing programmes carefully. See CGPA and ECTS conversion, studying in Europe with a low CGPA and the best of the nine with a low CGPA.

Language: the number belongs to the programme, not the country

There is no national IELTS rule in Greece, and knowing that stops people ruling themselves out for no reason.

What we observe across Greek programmes is a minimum around 5.5 and a typical ask of 6.0; our own country guide lists 6.5 as the usual band for English-medium programmes. That spread is the real information — no single number can belong to a whole country, and the one that governs you is printed on your programme's admissions page.

Some programmes accept a medium of instruction certificate from previous English-medium study, and some institutions run their own test. Because the condition varies by programme, email admissions where the wording is ambiguous and save the reply. Band comparisons are in IELTS requirements by country in Europe; what the MOI document is and who accepts it is in the medium of instruction certificate guide.

Greek is not an admission requirement for an English-taught programme, but how much of it daily life needs is a separate question, answered honestly in how much local language you need in Hungary, Greece and Bulgaria.

The slow clock is paperwork, and it is not in your hands

The longest step in a Greek file has nothing to do with studying. It is making your documents legally usable in Greece.

An apostille does not work for Greece. Bangladesh joined the Apostille Convention, in force from 30 March 2025 — but Greece objected under Article 12, as did Denmark and Finland. An objection means the Convention does not operate between the two countries at all, so Greece still requires the full consular legalisation chain. Italy, Cyprus, Hungary, Malta, Sweden and Bulgaria do accept one; both halves are load-bearing. Read the apostille and the countries that refuse it and the attestation order, which matter more for a master's applicant than for a school-leaver because the stack of documents is bigger: SSC, HSC, the bachelor's transcript and certificate, and often syllabi too.

Add a second step you do not control: establishing that your foreign degree is recognised and comparable for the Greek institution's purposes. No processing time is published for that assessment, so anyone telling you how long it takes is guessing. There is only one sound response — start it before anything else, ahead of the personal statement and the IELTS booking, and ask the institution in writing exactly what form of evidence it wants. The ministry's own pages and Study in Greece are listed in the sources below.

Feeding the chain means collecting transcripts and certificates, certified translation in Dhaka, the attestation sequence compared and, for private and National University graduates, their own attestation route.

The last step is not in your hands either. Greece's visa application centre in Dhaka has been open since February 2026 and takes submission and biometrics — but the decision is made by the Greek embassy in New Delhi, with the file couriered there. You avoid the trip, not the Delhi timeline. EU law gives a complete student application a maximum of 90 days, but the clock starts when the file is complete. See where Bangladeshi students apply for a Greek visa, applying from Dhaka, Dhaka or Delhi and Greek processing times.

Three different numbers people treat as one

The money confusion in every Greek file is the same: what you must show, what you spend, and what the degree costs are three different figures.

What you payThe figureWhat people get wrong
Public tuitionEUR 1,500 to 4,000 a yearLow by European public standards, but not free
Living costsEUR 450 to 700 a monthHousing 200-380, food 150-230, transport 25-40, other 60-110
Funds shown for the visaRoughly EUR 7,200 a yearLegal minimum EUR 400 a month, so EUR 4,800 a year, but the embassy looks for EUR 600-700
Tuition before the visaAt least one thirdIt leaves before any decision arrives; do not budget it as refundable
Bangladesh-side spendRoughly BDT 3 to 5 lakhThe rate where the file is decided in Delhi, and none of it refundable

The last two rows are what make Greece harder than its low headline cost suggests. Inside the Bangladesh-side figure, attestation, translation and legalisation run BDT 10,000 to 30,000, courier BDT 4,000 to 9,000, and a one-way ticket BDT 70,000 to 120,000.

No blocked account is required, which changes the job: you are not freezing money, you are explaining where it came from, and a large late deposit is the most damaging single thing in a file. The mechanics are in Greece's proof of funds, proof of funds across Europe, bank statements, the solvency certificate, sponsors and affidavits and when the embassy calls your sponsor. The totals are in what studying in Greece costs, tuition fees in Greece and living in Athens or Thessaloniki.

On funding, read the honest version first: scholarships for studying in Greece. And the rule that holds everywhere — a scholarship you have only applied for is not money. Until it is awarded in writing, build the file as though it will not arrive.

The deadline shape at master's level

Greece has two intakes: October, the main one, and February. Work backwards from the intake rather than forwards from today, because legalisation and the Delhi courier leg are the two steps that cannot be rushed at the end.

The real order is: documents and recognition first, then the programme application, then the offer, then the first tuition instalment, then the visa. Keep the intake and deadline calendar and the European application timeline open together, and from offer to boarding pass for the final stretch.

Of the documents you write yourself, the two that matter most at this level are covered in SOP, motivation letter and personal statement and the statement of purpose guide, with the study plan document being particularly useful in a Greek file. To see where files break before yours does, read why Greece student visas are refused.

Work, and the question that comes after

One point needs stating plainly, because other sites will tell you the opposite: Greece publishes no weekly working-hours figure for students. Anyone quoting a specific number is guessing, and budgeting on a guess is a risk.

What is documented is the structure: a non-EU student must obtain a separate work authorisation, so there is no working from the day you land. The detail is in student work rules in Greece, and the larger truth in a student visa is not a work permit.

What follows study is conditional too, and the residence arithmetic is worth knowing before you commit: on the five-year clock, study years count at 50 percent — a two-year master's counts as one. Work years count faster. Post-study work and residence in Europe has the full picture. The genuine upside: Greece is in Schengen, so a student residence permit carries the mobility that comes with it — the conditions are here.

Who should do this somewhere else

Four groups will do better on another path.

Anyone whose subject has no English-taught programme. That is a catalogue problem, not a preparation problem, and no amount of file-building changes it.

Anyone with a three-year pass degree who will not add the one-year Bangladeshi master's. They will spend a cycle arguing with evaluators and may still lose.

Anyone whose real objective is a work permit. Work needs a separate authorisation, no hours figure is published, and study years count at half rate toward residence. A plan that only works if the immigration outcome is assumed does not work.

Any family that cannot pay one third of tuition before the visa is decided. In Greece that money leaves before any decision arrives, which makes the cash position harder than the headline cost suggests.

There is also a question few applicants ask: is a master's right at all right now? A second bachelor's versus a master's and a bachelor's abroad or a master's later weigh it. If you are comparing countries, put Greece versus Italy next to a master's in Italy — Italy accepts an apostille, which shortens the document chain considerably.

What to do next, in order

  1. 1Confirm an English-taught programme in your subject on the university's own page. If there is not one, stop here.
  2. 2Start the documents and the recognition step this week. It is the longest lead time, and an apostille will not shorten it.
  3. 3Establish whether your degree is four-year honours or three-year pass, and if it is a pass degree, decide now about the one-year master's.
  4. 4Read the programme's language sentence literally, email admissions if it is ambiguous, and save the reply.
  5. 5Build the funds file to roughly EUR 7,200 for the year, and budget the one third of tuition payable before the visa as a separate line.
  6. 6Build the calendar backwards from the intake, assuming the Delhi leg cannot be hurried. Keep the full Greece guide and Greece's entry requirements open.

On who to trust with any of this, read how to choose a study abroad consultancy — knowing the rules yourself is what makes bad advice obvious quickly.

Common questions

Can you really do a master's in Greece in English?+

Yes, and postgraduate study is where Greece's English-taught offer is at its widest — considerably wider than at bachelor level, where the door is close to shut for most Bangladeshi applicants. But the honest sentence does not end there. Most public teaching in Greece happens in Greek, and the English-taught postgraduate programmes are a specific catalogue of named programmes rather than the Greek system with the language swapped out. So the first question is never whether Greece is possible. It is whether an English-taught programme exists in your subject, and whether you can see it on the university's own page. For a good many subjects the honest answer is that there is not one.

Will my Bangladeshi three-year pass degree be accepted?+

It is the problem case, and the reason is credits rather than years. European admissions count ECTS, a measure of study volume: a three-year bachelor's is roughly 180 credits and a four-year honours roughly 240, and most European master's programmes require at least 180. On paper a three-year degree reaches the bar, but evaluators place a Bangladeshi pass degree below honours, so the arithmetic is not the whole story. The safest fix is one most applicants already have available: a one-year Bangladeshi master's on top of it, which lifts the file above the honours line and ends the argument before anyone has it. A four-year honours degree travels almost everywhere.

What CGPA do I need for a master's in Greece?+

No official universal conversion exists between a Bangladeshi CGPA and a European grade, so treat a precise cut-off from any adviser as a warning sign. The working rule across European admissions is that 3.0 on a 4.0 scale is a common threshold, 3.5 and above is competitive for scholarships, and 2.5 to 3.0 means choosing programmes carefully rather than abandoning the plan. In Greece the decision sits with the individual programme, so the number that actually governs you is the one printed on that programme's admissions page.

What IELTS band does a Greek master's require?+

There is no national IELTS rule in Greece; the number is set by the programme, not the country. What we observe across Greek programmes is a minimum around 5.5 and a typical ask of 6.0, while our own country guide lists 6.5 as the usual band for English-medium programmes. That spread is the useful information: no single number belongs to the country. Some programmes accept a medium of instruction certificate from previous English-medium study, and some institutions run their own test instead. Read your programme's language sentence literally, and if it is ambiguous, email admissions and save the reply.

Does an apostille work for Greek documents?+

No, and this is the most expensive misunderstanding in a Greek file. Bangladesh joined the Apostille Convention and it came into force on 30 March 2025, but Greece objected under Article 12, as did Denmark and Finland. An objection means the Convention does not operate between the two countries at all, so an apostille is worthless for Greece and the full consular legalisation chain is still required. Italy, Cyprus, Hungary, Malta, Sweden and Bulgaria do accept one. Both halves matter, and versions circulating in this market get one half or the other wrong.

How much money do I need to show for the visa?+

Plan on roughly EUR 7,200 for the year. The legal minimum is EUR 400 a month, which is EUR 4,800 a year, but in practice the embassy looks for EUR 600 to 700 a month, and the practical figure is the one your file has to meet. No blocked account is required in Greece, which means your job is not to freeze the money but to explain where it came from, and a large late deposit is the most damaging thing in the file. Tuition sits on top of that: at least one third of it has to be paid before the visa, which for many families is the largest single shock of the year.

How many hours a week can a student work in Greece?+

Greece publishes no weekly hours figure for students, and any site quoting you a specific number is guessing. What is documented is the structure: a non-EU student has to obtain a separate work authorisation, so there is no working from the day you land. Treat part-time earnings as support for a budget rather than a replacement for tuition or living costs, and never as a substitute for the funds you must evidence for the visa.

Does a master's in Greece lead quickly to permanent residence?+

No, and expectations about Greece are most often wrong on exactly this point. There is a route to residence after long-term lawful stay, but on the five-year clock study years count at 50 percent, so a two-year master's counts as one year. Work years count faster. That makes a master's in Greece a reasonable education decision and a slow immigration decision, and it is worth knowing plainly before spending BDT 3 to 5 lakh getting there.

Is the Greek student visa decided in Dhaka?+

Submission is in Dhaka; the decision is not. Greece's visa application centre in Dhaka opened in February 2026 and takes your application and biometrics, so you avoid the trip to India. The decision is made by the Greek embassy in New Delhi and your file travels there by courier, so you avoid the trip but not the Delhi timeline. EU law gives a complete student application a maximum of 90 days for a decision, but the clock starts when the file is complete, and the waiting before that point does not count toward it.

Who should not do a master's in Greece?+

Four groups. Anyone whose subject has no English-taught programme, because that is a catalogue problem and no amount of file preparation changes it. Anyone with a three-year pass degree who will not add the one-year Bangladeshi master's on top. Anyone whose real objective is a work permit, since work needs a separate authorisation, no hours figure is published, and study years count at half rate on the residence clock. And any family that cannot pay one third of tuition before the visa is decided, because in Greece that money leaves before any decision arrives.
