Bangladesh's 55% Schengen refusal rate: what that number actually measures

This statistic circulates constantly on social media and frightens many qualified students out of applying at all. So it is worth being precise about what it measures.

Two different visas

Schengen type-CNational type-D
PurposeTourism, family visits, business tripsStudy, work, long stays
DurationUp to 90 daysMore than 90 days
Decided byConsulates, under Schengen rulesThe country's national immigration authority
Central questionWill you return? Are you genuinely going to study, and can you afford it?
Statistics publishedYes, annually by the EUNot in a comparable form

The central questions are different — which is why the outcomes are too.

Why the short-stay rate is so high

For short-stay Schengen visas the consulate's main concern is migration risk — whether the applicant will return when the visa expires. For a tourist applicant from a country like Bangladesh, proving intent to return is structurally hard: without a strong job, property, family ties and travel history, doubt remains.

The student visa asks something else. It examines whether the admission is genuine, whether the institution is recognised, whether the money exists and its source is legitimate, whether there is insurance and accommodation, and whether the plan is coherent. Every one of those is something you can control through preparation — unlike proving an intention to return.

That is the difference, and it is the encouraging part.

So what is the student visa rate?

Honestly: no reliable aggregate figure is published. Type-D visas and residence permits are issued by each country under its own system and are not reported in one place the way short-stay Schengen visas are.

⚠️ So when an agency claims "our success rate is 98%", there is no verifiable basis for it, because no national baseline exists to compare against. Those claims are marketing, not statistics. (We publish no success rate ourselves, for exactly this reason.)

What you can control

Student visa refusals almost always have specific, addressable causes:

ReasonFix
Funds insufficient or source unclearGet the bank statement and sponsor evidence right
Inconsistencies across documentsLay every document side by side before submitting
Background does not match the programmeExplain it clearly in the motivation letter
No insurance or accommodation evidenceArrange both in advance
Incoherent interview answersReview the likely questions
Forged or exaggerated documentsNever — see why

Three rules for reading statistics

The broader lesson goes beyond this one number:

  1. 1Check what the number measures. "55% refusal" is true, about something else.
  2. 2Check the year. 43.3% in 2023, 54.9% in 2024 — without the year the figure is meaningless.
  3. 3Check the source. European Commission statistics and an agency's Facebook post are not the same thing.

Conclusion

The high short-stay Schengen refusal rate is real and a genuine problem for Bangladeshi travellers. But it is not a forecast for your student visa — different process, different criteria, different question.

A strong student file can be built, and it depends on preparation rather than luck. Concentrate on the part you control.

Common questions

Does Bangladesh's Schengen refusal rate apply to student visas?+

No. The roughly 55% figure for 2024 covers short-stay type-C Schengen visas, whose central question is whether you will return. Studying for more than 90 days needs a national type-D visa or residence permit — a separate process assessing admission, funds, insurance and the coherence of your plan.

What is the real student visa success rate?+

No reliable aggregate figure is published, because type-D visas and residence permits are issued by each country under its own system. That is why an agency's claim of a '98% success rate' has no verifiable basis — it is marketing, not statistics.

How do I avoid a refusal then?+

Student visa refusals have specific causes — unclear funds, inconsistent documents, a background that does not match the programme, missing insurance or accommodation evidence, incoherent interview answers. Each is controllable through preparation.
