What changed, and why it matters abroad
Bangladesh moved birth registration onto a central digital system run by the Office of the Registrar General, Birth and Death Registration. The certificate that system issues carries a 17-digit birth registration number, and anyone in the world can type that number into the government's own verification page and see the record.
That last sentence is the whole point. A European admissions office or immigration authority handed a birth certificate does exactly one thing with it: tries to verify it. A handwritten certificate, or an older 16-digit one that does not resolve online, cannot be verified — and a document that cannot be verified is treated as if it were not submitted at all.
Where a student actually needs it

For most single students applying to the nine countries we work with, the birth certificate is not the star of the visa file. It becomes decisive the moment children are involved, or the moment you need to correct a name.
Getting or upgrading one
Applications are filed through bdris.gov.bd, and the office that acts on them is the union parishad, pourashava or city corporation ward that holds the register — normally the place of birth, or your permanent or current address, depending on how the original registration was made.
What you will be asked for varies with your age and with whether a record already exists, but the usual set is a parent's NID, an existing family record, and for a late registration some proof of date of birth such as an SSC certificate or an immunisation record.
The fees are small. The statutory schedule is measured in tens of taka for registration and for a certified copy, with a modest charge for a correction. Anyone quoting you thousands is charging for their own time, not for the certificate. The current schedule is published on bdris.gov.bd.
Print the English version
The system can produce the certificate in English, and for anything going abroad that is the version you want. Two consequences follow, and both matter:
- 1You do not need a translation of a certificate you can simply print in English. That saves a fee and, more importantly, a step in the attestation chain — see certified translation in Dhaka for what genuinely does need translating.
- 2The English spelling on the certificate becomes a spelling you have to live with. It should match your passport exactly. If it does not, correct it now, while it is a small administrative job, rather than after an embassy has queried the file — the order of corrections is set out in fixing a name mismatch.
⚠️ Verify it yourself before you send it
Before the certificate goes into any file, put the 17-digit number and the date of birth into the government's verification page and confirm the record comes back and matches the paper in your hand. It takes a minute.
Two things fail this test surprisingly often: an old certificate that was never migrated into the digital register, and a certificate whose English spelling differs from the Bengali record. Both are fixable; neither is fixable in the week before a visa appointment.
Attestation, if your destination asks for it
Where a birth certificate has to be legalised for use abroad, it goes through the state chain ending at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and then the destination mission, in the same way academic documents do — but the pre-steps differ, because a civil document is verified by the local government office that issued it rather than by an education board. Common questions
Is an old 16-digit or handwritten birth certificate still valid?+

Do I need to translate my birth certificate?+
