Sweden does not refuse student visas, because Sweden does not issue one. You apply for a residence permit for studies, decided by the Swedish Migration Agency, and what arrives when it goes wrong is a permit refusal. That is not pedantry: it changes who decided and what you can do next.
It also changes the arithmetic of losing. In the other eight countries we work with, a refusal costs the fees, the documents and the year. In Sweden it can cost the first tuition instalment too, because a fee-paying student pays it before the permit application can be made. The money leaves Bangladesh first; an immigration officer reads the file afterwards. Nowhere else among our nine is the order that way round, and it is the first thing to understand about Sweden.
There is no refusal rate here, because no authority publishes one (why nobody publishes a success rate, what the Schengen refusal rate measures), and no top ten ranking, because a ranking claims data nobody holds.
Two decisions, and why families merge them
The university system decides whether you get a place. All Swedish admission runs through one national portal: a single SEK 900 application carries up to four ranked programmes, and the window opens 15 October and closes 15 January for the autumn intake. The January intake is small, so missing that date usually means waiting a year (applying through universityadmissions.se, what Sweden actually requires).
The Migration Agency decides the permit, after admission and, for fee payers, after the instalment. The identity step happens at the Embassy of Sweden in Dhaka, which arranges its own appointments free of charge (how Sweden handles a Bangladeshi application). Much of what this market calls a Sweden refusal is a failure at the first gate; only the second produces an appealable decision.
The failures, what they look like, and the fix
| The failure | What it looks like in the file | The fix |
|---|---|---|
| Missed the window | Nothing submitted by 15 January | Treat 15 January as hard; rank realistic programmes first |
| Sent the wrong way | An upload where the portal wants the institution to send it | Plan each document's route from the portal's Bangladesh page |
| MOI instead of a test | An MOI letter offered as English evidence | Book IELTS in the autumn; check each per-section minimum |
| Instalment unpaid | The permit application cannot be submitted | Pay from a separate account, refund policy in writing first |
| Funds sized for a year | A balance built on one year, permit longer | Count the permit's months, multiply, build to that |
| Money with no history | A large deposit weeks before, nothing behind it | Build over months; explain every large credit |
| Missing insurance | No policy on a programme under a year | Check the length, then buy cover |
| Name mismatch | Three spellings across SSC, HSC, NID and passport | Fix the documents first; the permit follows the passport |
| Unexplained switch or gap | A subject change or missing years never addressed | Add a short factual explanation with evidence |
One: the instalment you paid before anyone read your file
Start here: it reorders everything else. If you are a fee-paying student — every Bangladeshi applicant outside a full waiver is — the university wants the first tuition instalment before you can apply for the permit. Without it there is no refusal, no decision and nothing to appeal; only the year running out.
Swedish public tuition runs EUR 7,000 to 13,000 a year, so a first instalment is a serious transfer, on top of the SEK 900 application fee and the SEK 1,500 permit fee, neither refundable. Add the Bangladesh-side spend — roughly BDT 2 to 4 lakh for a single-country application, BDT 10,000 to 30,000 for attestation and translation, BDT 4,000 to 9,000 for courier — and a refused Swedish file is the most expensive refusal of our nine.
Three things follow. Get the refund policy in writing: Swedish universities generally have rules for a refused permit, but the conditions and the amount retained differ by institution. Remember that the instalment is a payment, not evidence — it does not count toward the funds you must show, so paying it from the account you meant to show weakens your own evidence (proof of funds for Sweden). And send it through a route that produces documents (sending tuition from Bangladesh, paying application fees).
If a waiver would change your answer, apply for one: those deadlines sit beside the January one, not after it — Swedish tuition fee waivers, the Swedish Institute scholarships, Nordic scholarships compared.
Two: the MOI letter Sweden does not take
This is a predictable rejection, predictable in September. Most Swedish universities do not accept a Bangladeshi medium of instruction letter, so an English test result, in practice IELTS, is effectively required. Students assume the letter travels because it genuinely works in several other European countries (which universities accept an MOI letter, the MOI certificate itself).
Be careful with the band you were quoted. On the programmes we track, bachelor entry sits around 6.0 overall and master's around 6.5 overall — our observation of programme policy, not a national rule. Swedish programmes also commonly set a minimum for each section, so a 6.5 carried by strong reading and weak writing can fail a requirement the overall score suggested it had passed (IELTS requirements by country).
Timing is the real trap: a test date is a queue you do not control, and a 15 January deadline means booking in the autumn (IELTS fees and test dates, how long a score stays valid). At BDT 29,600 for computer-delivered IELTS, and BDT 18,600 for a One Skill Retake, the test is cheap beside an instalment you cannot use. If skipping it is non-negotiable, Sweden is not an option (the best of the nine without IELTS).
Three: money counted by the month, not by the year
The requirement is SEK 10,656 a month, roughly EUR 960 at 2026 levels, and the word doing the damage is *monthly*. It is assessed for every month the permit covers, so a two-year master's is assessed across the whole period. A file built around a single year is short whenever the permit is longer — and the applicant usually does not know, because the number on the page looked right. This is the quietest of Sweden's three failure modes and the easiest to prevent: count the months, multiply, build to that. The figure is uprated, so take it from the Migration Agency on the day you apply.
There is no blocked account in Sweden, or in any of our nine (why none of them use one). That is less of a relief than it sounds: nothing is frozen, so the scrutiny moves to whether the money is genuinely yours, and an ordinary account history beats a large recent deposit every time — proof of funds, what the officer reads in a statement, sponsors and affidavits, why an inflated statement gets caught.
One thing that is not funding: since 11 June 2026 a Swedish study permit caps term-time work at 15 hours a week, relaxed over the summer. That is pocket money, not a plan, and breaching it can cost the permit (student work rules in Sweden).
Four: administrative failures, and a file that disagrees with itself
The delivery rule has nothing to do with the applicant's quality, and produces a file that is not assessed rather than refused. The admissions portal publishes a page of instructions for each country, Bangladesh included, naming the documents required and — the part people skim — how each one must reach Sweden. Some may be uploaded; others must be sent directly by the issuing institution, and a more convenient substitute produces an application that is not evaluated. Read that page before collecting anything: collecting transcripts, certified translation in Dhaka, scanning and file size rules, how long each document stays valid.
Two Bangladesh-specific traps sit beside it. Sweden accepts an apostille — Bangladesh joined the Convention with effect from 30 March 2025 — but Denmark, Finland and Greece objected, so a Nordic rule learned from one country is wrong for the others (the countries that refuse it). And the permit follows your passport exactly, so fix a name mismatch first and think twice about renewing a passport mid-application.
Underneath all of it sits one question: is this really a study project? A commerce background applying to a specialised engineering master's is not disqualifying, but with nothing explaining the move it invites the question the file should have answered. A gap works the same way — the gap is not the problem, the silence around it is (a gap explanation letter, does a gap stop you). Check the qualification early too: a four-year honours degree is about 240 ECTS and travels almost everywhere, a three-year pass degree at about 180 does not (three-year versus four-year, CGPA to European grades). And comprehensive insurance is required where the programme runs under a year (health insurance).
What the decision tells you
A Migration Agency refusal is a written decision, not a stamp. It names a ground and carries its own appeal instruction — where an appeal goes, and by when. That instruction is the only version that applies to you. Read it the day it arrives and note the date: the period runs from the decision, not from the day the news reaches Dhaka. Never take an appeal deadline from an article, including this one.
Then choose honestly between two moves (reading a refusal letter, reapplying versus appealing, appealing in Europe). Appeal when the decision is wrong about a fact — a document not considered, a figure miscalculated, a rule misapplied. Fix and refile when it is right about your file — the funds really were thin, the explanation really was missing, the English evidence really was not accepted. Appealing a correct decision rarely changes anything and burns the time you needed for the better one (what to change next time, how to reapply properly).
Sweden adds a wrinkle the other eight do not: the calendar runs once a year, and your place is tied to a start date and an instalment already paid, so an appeal that succeeds after the semester has begun may be worth less than it looks. Ask your university in writing what happens to both.
One more reason a file goes quiet: EU law gives a complete application a maximum of 90 days, and the clock starts only when the file is complete. A file missing a document is not slow — it has not started, and from Dhaka the two look identical (how long each European student visa takes, visa versus residence permit).
What nobody can promise you
No consultancy can guarantee a Swedish permit, and the clearest evidence comes from the Swedish embassy in Dhaka, which publishes a warning about individuals who falsely claim to represent it and offer, for money, an earlier appointment or influence over a decision. Embassies do not publish fraud notices about their own process unless the fraud is common. Read it as a map of which promises are worthless here: an earlier slot, a friendly officer, a guaranteed outcome. A success rate belongs on the same list, which is why we publish none (choosing a consultancy, agency versus doing it yourself, fake documents and agency fraud).
Who this page is not for
Three readers should take Sweden off the list rather than optimise a file for it. If your plan depends on an MOI letter and you will not sit an English test, Sweden will not work. If your funding quietly assumes a part-time job, the 15-hour cap and a maintenance figure assessed across the whole permit break the arithmetic before you leave. And if losing the first instalment would break your family financially, Sweden's order of operations puts a risk on you the other eight do not — a reason to choose differently, not to be braver.
For everyone else Sweden remains one of Europe's most orderly systems, with 12 months of job-seeking permission after graduation and living costs of EUR 750 to 1,100 a month: what Sweden is actually good for, what it costs from Bangladesh, can you study in Sweden for free.
The order that prevents most of this
- 1Check the English requirement for your exact programmes, section minimums included, and book the test first.
- 2Read the portal's Bangladesh instructions and note whether each document is uploaded or institution-sent.
- 3Collect, attest and translate on that timetable, working backwards from 15 January.
- 4Count the months your permit will cover and build the funds evidence to that number.
- 5Keep the instalment money and the maintenance money in separate accounts.
- 6Get the refund policy for a refused permit in writing before you transfer.
- 7Apply as soon as admission and the instalment allow; completeness is the priority.

Common questions
What is the refusal rate for Swedish student permits from Bangladesh?+
Nobody knows, and nobody publishes it. A national residence permit for studies is not part of the Schengen short-stay visa statistics, and the European residence-permit data that does exist is broken down by reason and citizenship, not by application outcome. So there is no published refusal rate for Sweden, for Bangladesh, or for Bangladeshis applying to Sweden. Any consultancy quoting you one has either misread the Schengen figures or invented a number. The useful question is not what the rate is; it is what the file is tested against, which is knowable and is the subject of this page.
If my Swedish permit is refused, do I lose the tuition I already paid?+
That depends on your university's refund policy, not on the Migration Agency. This is the part of the Swedish route Bangladeshi families underestimate: a fee-paying student must pay the first tuition instalment before the permit application can be made at all, so the money has already left Bangladesh when the decision is taken. Swedish universities do generally operate refund rules for a refused permit, but the conditions, the deadline for claiming and the amount retained differ by institution. Ask for that policy in writing, from the university, before you transfer anything.
Will a medium of instruction letter from my Bangladeshi university work for Sweden?+
Almost certainly not. Most Swedish universities do not accept a Bangladeshi MOI letter, so in practice an English test result is required. This catches people out because an MOI letter genuinely works in several other European countries, which makes students assume it travels. It does not. If your entire plan rests on avoiding IELTS, Sweden is the wrong country to build it around, and you are better off discovering that in September than in December.
Is an unassessed application the same as a refusal?+
No, and the difference matters. If a document reaches the admissions portal by a method its country-specific instructions do not allow, or arrives after the deadline, the application may simply not be assessed. Nothing is refused, because nothing was ever decided — which also means there is no decision to appeal. A permit refusal from the Migration Agency is different: it is a written decision that names a ground and carries its own appeal instruction.
How much money do I have to show, and for how long?+
The 2026 level is SEK 10,656 a month, roughly EUR 960, and the word that decides everything is monthly. It is assessed for every month the permit covers, not once for a year, so a two-year master's is assessed across the whole period. A file built on one year's worth of funds is short the moment the permit granted is longer than a year, and the applicant usually has no idea. The figure is set in kronor and is uprated, so take the current number from the Migration Agency on the day you apply rather than from any article, this one included.
Does a study gap get a Swedish application refused?+
A gap by itself is not a ground for refusal. An unexplained gap is a different thing: it leaves a hole in the story the file tells, and a file is read as a story rather than scored. Write a short, factual explanation of what you did in those years, attach the evidence — employment letters, a business trade licence, medical documents where relevant — and let the file answer the question before it is asked.
Can I appeal a Migration Agency refusal?+
A refusal is a written decision and it carries its own appeal instruction, stating where an appeal goes and by when. That instruction is attached to your decision and is the only version that applies to your case, so read it the day it arrives and note the date on it. Do not take an appeal deadline from a blog, including this one. The separate question of whether an appeal is the right move at all, rather than a corrected fresh application, is worth thinking through carefully, because the Swedish admission calendar runs once a year.
Why is my decision taking so long?+
EU law gives a complete student application a maximum of ninety days for a decision, and the phrase doing the work is complete. The clock starts when the file is complete, so an application missing a document is not a slow application, it is one that has not started. The Migration Agency publishes waiting-time statistics for each permit type on its own site, and those are the only processing figures worth quoting. Anything shorter that you have been told is a sales number.
Does Sweden need an apostille or the old consular legalisation chain?+
Sweden accepts an apostille. Bangladesh joined the Apostille Convention with effect from 30 March 2025, and Sweden is one of the countries that accepts one. Do not generalise that across the Nordics: Denmark and Finland both objected under Article 12, as did Greece, so for those three an apostille is worthless and the full consular legalisation chain still applies. Getting this backwards costs weeks in either direction.
Can an agency guarantee me a Swedish permit?+
No, and the strongest evidence for that comes from the Swedish embassy itself, which publishes a warning about individuals who falsely claim to represent it and offer, for payment, an earlier appointment or influence over a decision. Embassies do not publish fraud notices about their own process unless the fraud is common. Treat any guaranteed outcome, purchased appointment or quoted success rate as a reason to walk away. We do not publish a success rate for our own files either, for exactly the reason this page opens with.
