What you actually need to study in Cyprus: the five things Cyprus tests

Md. Salahuddin 11 min read Last reviewed: 2026-09-19Visa and embassy

The short answer

Cyprus assesses five things: your academic qualification, recognition (of your documents and of the institution, which are two entirely separate questions), evidence of English, evidence of money, and getting the steps done in the right order. There is no point memorising a document list; almost every file that fails does so against one of those five.

And one thing first, because it changes what the whole plan is worth: what you receive at the end is a Cypriot national category D visa, not a Schengen visa.

First, the fact that reshapes the decision: Cyprus is in the EU, not in Schengen

This is the most consequential thing about studying in Cyprus, and the one most often got wrong. The EU and the Schengen area are not the same club: the EU is an economic and legal union, Schengen a separate arrangement removing passport checks at internal borders. Cyprus belongs to the first, not the second.

QuestionThe answer for Cyprus
In the European Union?Yes
In the Schengen area?No
The visa you will holdA Cypriot national category D visa
Schengen travel on the permit? No — apply for a Schengen visa separately
Moving to another EU country laterA new application — nothing is automatic

Put plainly, the weekend-in-Paris picture does not apply. With a Cypriot residence card you would still apply for a visa to enter France or Italy, much as from Dhaka. See is Cyprus in Schengen, the map across all nine in Schengen or the EU, and the rules that do apply in travelling in Schengen on a student permit and type D versus type C.

One distinction that must never be blurred. This page is about the Republic of Cyprus. The northern part of the island runs a separate system, where admission, visas and recognition of the degree are all different questions: the Republic of Cyprus versus North Cyprus.

1. The academic qualification: what each level needs

LevelWhat Cyprus needsWhere it usually breaks
Bachelor'sHSC or equivalent; minimum average set per programmeSlow transcripts; a name mismatch across documents
Master'sA recognised bachelor's; the ECTS arithmetic must workA three-year pass degree, which sits at the 180 ECTS line
PhDA master's, research proposal and supervisor; conditions set by the institutionApplying before a supervisor has agreed to take you

The age floor is normally around 17 and the upper end flexible, so if you are older than most applicants, read is there an age limit rather than assuming. A gap is acceptable when explained — does a study gap stop you, writing a gap explanation letter.

On CGPA, no official universal conversion exists. As a working rule, 3.0 out of 4.0 is a common threshold, 3.5 and above is competitive for scholarships, and 2.5 to 3.0 means choosing programmes carefully — CGPA to European grades, low CGPA in Europe. Straight from school, a bachelor's after HSC; from a private or National University institution, are those degrees accepted.

2. Recognition: two questions, and people only ask one

Question one is whether your documents are recognised. Cyprus is comparatively easy here, for a specific reason. The Apostille Convention came into force for Bangladesh on 30 March 2025, and Cyprus accepts an apostille. Worth naming, because the neighbouring destination Greece objected, as did Denmark and Finland: a Greece file still needs the long consular legalisation chain and a Cyprus file does not — in calendar terms, weeks. The steps: attestation and apostille, which countries refuse it, collecting transcripts, and for private or National University graduates, attestation for those graduates.

Question two is whether the institution is recognised. That is the real selection question in Cyprus, and almost nobody asks it.

3. A private-university sector, which changes what "requirements" even means

Higher education in Cyprus is dominated by private universities, and that changes two things. The entry bar at many institutions is comparatively low, so "will they take me" stops being the meaningful question. And the fee is a real price set by the institution, not a figure calculated from family income — the income-assessed reductions some other European systems run cannot be assumed here.

So your actual question becomes whether the institution and the programme are properly accredited. Cyprus has a named body for this — the Cyprus Agency of Quality Assurance in Higher Education — which publishes the register of accredited institutions and programmes; the education ministry sets out how the sector is structured. Both addresses are below, and checking a name against that register is the highest-value five minutes in a Cyprus application.

The public side is small: tuition EUR 3,500 to EUR 7,000 a year, higher entry bar — University of Cyprus and Cyprus University of Technology. The method is checking a private university or college, with checking that an offer letter is genuine and checking a programme is really taught in English. Much sold as a "scholarship" here is a fee discount: merit scholarships at Cypriot universities. What fraud costs: fake documents and agency fraud.

4. English: there is no national band, the institution decides

Evidence of English is required. What does not exist is a national minimum binding every Cypriot university — the institution sets it. The picture our country guide publishes:

RouteWhat is typically asked
Private universities (UNIC, EUC, Frederick, Neapolis, UCLan)Bands around IELTS 5.5
Public universities (University of Cyprus, CUT)IELTS 6.0 to 6.5
A Medium of Instruction letterAccepted in many places, on prior English-medium study
The university's own test, often onlinePossible at many private institutions

A warning that matters more than the table. The figures above — 5.5 as a floor, 6.0 as normal — are our observation of the programmes we watch, not a Cypriot national rule. So when an agent says "Cyprus needs 5.5", the reply is a question: which university, which programme, on which published page? Ask in writing.

If you do sit the test: IDP listed computer-delivered IELTS at BDT 29,600 on 9 September 2026, One Skill Retake at BDT 18,600, a remark at BDT 10,500 and a date change at BDT 3,000; paper IELTS ended after 31 January 2026. The alternatives: studying in Cyprus without IELTS, the MOI certificate, who accepts an MOI letter, IELTS by country, the online English interview and IELTS fees and dates.

5. Money: plan on EUR 7,000, and no blocked account

ItemThe Cyprus figure
Public tuitionEUR 3,500 to EUR 7,000 a year
Living costsEUR 500 to EUR 800 a month
Proof of fundsPlan on EUR 7,000 a year (in practice EUR 5,000 to 7,000, set by the university)
Blocked accountNot required
Form of evidenceA bank letter with statements

By month: EUR 200 to EUR 400 for accommodation, EUR 150 to EUR 250 for food, EUR 30 to EUR 50 for transport, EUR 60 to EUR 120 for everything else. Plan for one thing early: part of the first year's tuition may have to be paid before you travel, so money leaves the account well ahead of the flight.

The Bangladesh-side spend is real too, and none of it comes back on a refusal: roughly BDT 2 to 4 lakh for a single-country application, an air ticket at BDT 70,000 to 120,000 one way, attestation, translation and legalisation BDT 10,000 to 30,000, courier BDT 4,000 to 9,000.

The paperwork: what the officer reads in a bank statement, the solvency certificate, sponsors and affidavits, sending tuition legally, loans and show money, and why an inflated bank statement gets caught — the one mistake here with no route back. Full budget: what studying in Cyprus costs.

6. The process: the order is the hardest requirement

Cyprus runs two intakes, autumn in September and spring in January and February — who the spring one suits is in the spring intake.

The sequence: offer, fees and documents settled, the immigration side opens, the national category D visa issued, then the residence permit after you arrive. Where it is lodged and what the institution does first: where Bangladeshi students apply, and step by step, study in Cyprus from Bangladesh.

One right worth knowing: under EU law a complete student application must be decided within 90 days (Directive 2016/801). The operative word is complete — the clock starts when the file is finished, not when you submitted it, so one missing document means it has not started.

The rest of the file: a one-page document checklist, police clearance, medical certificates and vaccination, health insurance, the e-passport, name mismatches, the statement of purpose. After you land: your first 90 days and the residence permit card.

What is not a requirement, despite being widely believed

  • Not a Schengen visa. You get a Cypriot national category D visa — not lesser, different, and the difference is the point of this page.
  • Not a blocked account. Cyprus does not require one. The funds are shown, not frozen.
  • Not always an IELTS certificate. Evidence of English is required; an MOI letter or the university's own test satisfies it at many institutions.
  • Not a national minimum band. The 5.5 and 6.0 figures are our observation. The number binding you is on your programme's page.
  • Not Greek, in order to study. English-taught programmes do not require it. Greek appears much later, at A2, for long-term residence.
  • Not an upper age limit. The floor is around 17; above it the rule is flexible.
  • Not an unbroken academic record. A gap is fine when explained and evidenced.
  • Not an agency. You can lodge the application yourself: agency versus doing it yourself.

Work rules: not a requirement, but where the biggest untruth is sold

"Land and work your way through it" is the most repeated claim about Cyprus, and it is wrong. There is no work at all during the first semester, roughly six months. After that, 20 hours a week is permitted in named sectors, rising to 38 during holidays, and the contract must be stamped at the labour department. So the whole first six months must be funded before you board — the real arithmetic of a Cyprus year. See student work rules in Cyprus, a student visa is not a work permit, the work-permit promise and real student pay.

After graduation, master's and PhD graduates may obtain a 12-month job-search permit; bachelor's graduates convert to a work permit through employer sponsorship — post-study work and residence routes and the nine ranked for staying after study.

Who Cyprus is the wrong choice for

This paragraph will cost us enquiries, and it stays: these mistakes are paid for in money.

  • Anyone whose plan depends on Schengen mobility. Cyprus is not in Schengen. The permit gives you the right to live on an island, not to move around a continent. If seeing Europe is a real part of why you are going, choose a Schengen country.
  • Anyone whose real objective is moving on to another EU country afterwards. The degree is European; your permit is Cypriot. Moving means a new country, a new application, new conditions — anyone selling Cyprus as a side door into Europe is overstating it.
  • Anyone whose budget assumes work from month one. There is none for six months. That sentence should end some plans before the ticket is bought.
  • Anyone counting on permanent residence after five years of study. Student years are normally counted as half, and the status also asks for Greek at A2 and stable income.
  • Anyone unwilling to verify accreditation. In a private-dominated sector that check is your only real protection, and passing off a northern institution as a Republic of Cyprus one is a known local fraud.

Who does do well is in what Cyprus is actually good for, the nearest alternative in Cyprus versus Malta, and for medicine, Bulgaria versus Cyprus. The common fields each have a Europe-wide reality check: business and MBA, computer science and IT, tourism and hospitality, nursing.

What to do next

  1. 1Check the institution and the programme by name against the Cypriot accreditation register — address in the sources below. First, not last.
  2. 2Get the English requirement in writing from the programme's own page.
  3. 3Budget on EUR 7,000 for the year and assume zero income for six months. The cost calculator helps.
  4. 4Start the documents and apostille today — the slowest item on the calendar. Work through the document checklist.
  5. 5For the country in one view, read the Cyprus country guide.

Common questions

Can I travel in Schengen on a Cypriot student residence permit?+

No. Cyprus is a member of the European Union but not of the Schengen area, so what you hold is a Cypriot national category D visa and then a Cypriot residence permit. Neither gives you the right to enter France, Italy or Germany. To visit those countries you apply for a Schengen visa in the ordinary way, exactly as you would from Dhaka. The consequences are set out in [is Cyprus in Schengen](/en/blog/is-cyprus-in-schengen).

Is IELTS compulsory for Cyprus?+

Evidence of English is compulsory; an IELTS certificate specifically is not always. Many Cypriot universities accept a Medium of Instruction letter, and many private institutions run their own English test or an online interview instead. Across the programmes we watch, 5.5 tends to be the floor and 6.0 the normal ask, but that is our observation and not a national rule — the figure that binds you is the one on your programme's own page. See [studying in Cyprus without IELTS](/en/blog/studying-in-cyprus-without-ielts).

How much money do I have to show?+

Budget on EUR 7,000 for one year. In Cyprus the university sets the figure rather than the state, and in practice it lands between EUR 5,000 and EUR 7,000, so planning at the top of that range is what stops a late shortfall. The evidence asked for is a bank letter together with statements. How to assemble it is in [proof of funds for a European student visa](/en/blog/proof-of-funds-european-student-visa).

Do I need a blocked account like Germany's?+

No. Cyprus does not require a blocked account. The proof of funds is there to be shown, not to be frozen, so the money stays in your own account and remains available to you. That is a genuine practical advantage of Cyprus, and it is one of the things families most often get wrong. The nine-country comparison is [blocked accounts, and why none of our nine use one](/en/blog/blocked-accounts-and-why-our-nine-do-not-use-them).

Can I go to Cyprus for a bachelor's straight after HSC?+

Yes. HSC or an equivalent secondary qualification is the basic entry route to a bachelor's, with the minimum average result varying by programme. The usual age floor is around 17 and there is no rigid upper limit. After SSC alone, however, the answer is no — that is covered honestly in [can you study in Europe after SSC](/en/blog/can-you-study-in-europe-after-ssc).

Will a three-year pass degree get me onto a master's in Cyprus?+

This is a Europe-wide arithmetic problem rather than a Cypriot one. A three-year bachelor is roughly 180 ECTS credits and a four-year one roughly 240, and most European master's programmes want at least 180. So a Bangladeshi four-year honours degree is accepted almost everywhere, while the three-year pass degree is the problem case; the usual fix is a one-year Bangladeshi master's on top. Detail in [three-year pass versus four-year honours](/en/blog/three-year-vs-four-year-bachelor-europe-masters).

Does Cyprus accept a Bangladeshi apostille?+

Yes. The Apostille Convention came into force for Bangladesh on 30 March 2025 and Cyprus accepts an apostille. This is worth stating precisely because the neighbouring destination Greece objected under Article 12, as did Denmark and Finland, so those three still require the full consular legalisation chain while Cyprus does not. The full picture is in [Bangladesh's apostille, and the countries that refuse it](/en/blog/bangladesh-apostille-which-countries-refuse-it).

Can I start working as soon as I land?+

No, and this is the most widely sold untruth about Cyprus. There is no work at all during the first semester, roughly six months. After that you may work 20 hours a week in named sectors, rising to 38 hours during holidays, and the contract has to be stamped at the labour department. In budget terms this means the whole of your first six months has to be funded before you fly. See [student work rules in Cyprus](/en/blog/student-work-rules-in-cyprus).

Does a study gap block a Cyprus application?+

No. Cyprus accepts a gap when it is explained, and the operative word is explained: the file needs an honest, evidenced account of what you did in those years, not an apology. The format and the kinds of evidence that work are in [writing a study gap explanation letter](/en/blog/writing-a-study-gap-explanation-letter).

Do five years of study in Cyprus lead to permanent residence?+

Not in the way it is usually sold. Long-term residence needs five years of continuous legal residence, but years spent as a student are normally counted as half, and the status also requires Greek at A2 level and stable income. So a bachelor's plus a master's can leave the clock far short of where a family assumed it would be. If anyone is charging you for a guaranteed permanent residence outcome, that is your signal to stop. The country-by-country picture is in [post-study work and residence routes](/en/blog/post-study-work-and-residence-europe).
