The fact that decides it
The University of Cyprus is the Republic's public flagship, founded in 1989, based in Nicosia, and the most academically respected institution on the island. It is also, for most Bangladeshi applicants, the wrong target — and the reason has nothing to do with your grades.
Undergraduate teaching at UCY is overwhelmingly in Greek. English-taught provision exists, but it is concentrated at master's and doctoral level. An applicant coming straight from HSC who does not read Greek will find very little to apply to, and the recruiters who list UCY alongside English-medium private universities are not distinguishing between them.

Those fee figures are per programme rather than per year and are set individually, so read the specific programme page. The general point stands regardless of the number: UCY at master's level is far cheaper than a private university on the island.
Where UCY is genuinely strong
Computer science, electrical and computer engineering, civil engineering, economics and finance, business, mathematics, and biological sciences. It runs real research centres and it participates fully in EU research programmes, which matters if a PhD or a research career is the destination. For a master's applicant with a solid technical bachelor's, it is a serious and underused option.
How you apply
- 1Search the university's postgraduate programme list and filter for English-taught programmes — do not assume from a subject name.
- 2Note the application window; UCY runs defined postgraduate calls rather than rolling admission.
- 3Submit transcripts, degree certificate, English certificate, references and a research or motivation statement.

Funding and the research route
UCY is a public university, so there is no large international scholarship fund of the kind private institutions advertise. What exists is narrower and more useful if it fits you: departmental teaching and research assistantships at doctoral level, project-funded PhD positions attached to specific research grants, and Erasmus+ mobility once you are enrolled.
The practical consequence is that UCY rewards a targeted approach. Rather than applying to the university and hoping funding appears, identify a research group and a supervisor in your field, read what they actually publish, and write to them before the application window opens. That is a normal and expected step for a funded PhD anywhere in Europe, and it is the difference between an application that is read carefully and one that is merely processed.
The honest comparison
If UCY's English-taught master's list contains your subject, it is usually a better deal than a private Cypriot university: lower fees, stronger research, and a public qualification. If it does not, be honest about the alternatives rather than forcing it:
- A private English-medium university in the Republic, such as the University of Nicosia, at a much higher fee.
- Cyprus University of Technology in Limassol, which has the same Greek-language pattern at bachelor's level.
- A public university in Italy or Hungary, where English-taught bachelor's provision is far wider and the fee is comparable or lower. Compare on the country comparison page.
⚠️ One warning that applies to everything Cyprus. The island is divided, and only institutions in the Republic of Cyprus award EU-recognised degrees. UCY is in the Republic. Universities in the unrecognised north are not, whatever their marketing says — see the Republic of Cyprus versus North Cyprus.
Before you apply
- 1Open the postgraduate list and confirm your exact programme is taught in English before doing anything else.
- 2Check whether the fee is quoted per year or for the whole programme — at UCY it is often the latter.
- 3If nothing fits, compare Italy and Hungary for the same subject rather than paying private-university fees for a similar outcome.
