What we process, and what we do not
We process applications only to the Republic of Cyprus, the EU member state. We do not process applications to universities in the north of the island, and this article is written so you can tell the two apart before you pay anyone. It is the single most common mis-selling in this market and it is entirely avoidable with two minutes of checking.
The two entities, plainly
| Republic of Cyprus | Northern part of the island | |
|---|---|---|
| International status | Sovereign state, UN member | Self-declared; recognised only by Turkiye |
| EU member | Yes, since 2004 | No |
| Schengen area | No | No |
| Degree status | EU degree | Not an EU degree |
| Residence permit | EU residence permit | Carries no EU rights |
| Accreditation body for universities | Cyprus national quality assurance agency | Its own body, and often Turkiye's higher education council |
| Currency in normal use | Euro | Turkish lira |
| Main cities | Nicosia, Limassol, Larnaca, Paphos | Nicosia north, Famagusta, Kyrenia |
| Main airports | Larnaca, Paphos | Ercan, reachable only via Turkiye |
The island has been divided since 1974. The Republic of Cyprus is internationally recognised as the state of the whole island; the northern third is administered by an entity that only Turkiye recognises.
Why this matters to you, in practical terms
Your degree. A degree from the Republic is an EU qualification. Within the EU it is assessed through the ENIC-NARIC recognition network like any other member state's, and for regulated professions the EU recognition directives apply. A degree from an institution in the north sits outside that entire framework. It may still be a real education from a real university with real teaching, but it does not carry EU status, and every recognition question about it has to be answered institution by institution, country by country.
Your permit. A residence permit issued in the Republic is an EU residence permit. It gives you the rights a student in an EU member state has, including the country's post-study job-search route. A permit issued in the north gives you none of that.
Getting there and moving around. Ercan airport in the north is served through Turkiye. Entering the island through the Republic's airports at Larnaca or Paphos and then crossing to the north is possible at the designated crossing points, but the legal position on entering the Republic via the north is not, and you should not construct a travel plan on a friend's advice. Neither side is in Schengen, so neither permit gives you free Europe-wide travel.
Recognition in Bangladesh. For any degree from anywhere, the answer comes from the University Grants Commission of Bangladesh, and for medicine, dentistry, nursing or pharmacy it comes from the relevant professional council. ⚠️ Ask them in writing, before you enrol, and keep the reply. This is not paranoia; it is the only document that will matter in five years.
How to tell which side you are being sold
Agents rarely lie outright. They simply say "Cyprus" and show a photograph of a beach. Check these five things yourself:
- 1The address on the offer letter. Nicosia is in the Republic; addresses written as North Nicosia or Lefkosa, Famagusta or Gazimagusa, and Kyrenia or Girne are in the north.
- 2The currency the fee is quoted in. The Republic uses the euro. Fees in the north are frequently quoted in Turkish lira or in US dollars.
- 3The accreditation body named on the university's own website. An EU institution names the Cyprus national quality assurance agency; institutions in the north name their own body and often Turkiye's higher education council.
- 4The flight route the agent proposes. If the itinerary goes via Istanbul to Ercan, you are going north.
- 5The visa you are told to apply for. A student visa for the Republic of Cyprus is issued through the Republic's authorities. Anything else is not.
If an agent becomes vague when you ask which of these applies, you have your answer. The wider pattern is covered in fake documents and agency fraud and how to choose a consultancy.
What we are not saying
We are not saying universities in the north are worthless or fraudulent. Several are large, long-established institutions with real campuses and real teaching, and some Bangladeshi graduates of them have done well. Tuition and living costs there are genuinely lower than in the Republic.
What we are saying is that it is a fundamentally different product, and it must be chosen deliberately rather than discovered on arrival. If you go north knowing exactly what you are buying, having confirmed recognition with the UGC in writing, that is a decision. If you find out at the airport, it is a disaster, and it is one we see repeatedly.
Do this before you pay a single taka
- 1Ask the agent, in writing: is this university in the Republic of Cyprus, an EU member state?
- 2Open the university's own website and find its accreditation statement.
- 3Write to the UGC, and to the relevant council if your subject is regulated, and keep the reply.
- 4If the answer is the Republic, continue with the Cyprus country guide and the comparison with Malta.

Common questions
Is a degree from North Cyprus recognised in the EU?+
Not as an EU degree. The Republic of Cyprus is an EU member state and its universities issue EU qualifications; the northern part of the island is recognised only by Turkiye and its institutions sit outside the EU framework entirely. Recognition of a northern degree has to be assessed case by case, institution by institution, in each country.
How do I tell which side of Cyprus a university is on?+
Check the address on the offer letter, the currency the fee is quoted in, the accreditation body named on the university's own website, the flight route proposed, and which authority issues the student visa. Nicosia, Limassol, Larnaca and Paphos are in the Republic; North Nicosia or Lefkosa, Famagusta or Gazimagusa, and Kyrenia or Girne are in the north.
Does ScholarsDream process applications to North Cyprus?+
No. We process applications only to the Republic of Cyprus, the EU member state. This article exists so that a student who is considering the north does so knowingly, having confirmed recognition with the University Grants Commission of Bangladesh in writing first.
Is the Republic of Cyprus in the Schengen area?+
No. It is a full EU member state but not part of Schengen, so its residence permit does not by itself allow free short-stay travel to Italy, Greece or other Schengen countries. Neither side of the island is in Schengen.
