Study in Cyprus from Bangladesh: the entry permit process that never leaves Dhaka

Md. Salahuddin 10 min read Last reviewed: 2026-09-02Visa and embassy

In short: Send the university your complete file, let it apply for your entry permit in Nicosia, receive the visa from Dhaka, fly to Larnaca, repeat the medical tests and register for the pink slip. Budget about EUR 7,000 in evidenced funds plus a repatriation bank guarantee, and understand from day one that Cyprus is EU but not Schengen.

For a first-time applicant the hardest part of a European file is often not the university but the embassy. Cyprus removes that category of difficulty entirely — and that, more than sunshine or cost, is why it has become a common first destination for Bangladeshi students. What it does not remove is the need to check accreditation, get the medical tests right and understand exactly what kind of visa you are getting.

Choosing the university: where honesty is needed

Most international students in Cyprus attend private universities — UNIC, European University Cyprus, Frederick, Neapolis, UCLan Cyprus. The two public universities, the University of Cyprus and CUT, ask for IELTS 6.0–6.5 and have far fewer seats. Quality across the private sector varies by institution, so the useful question is never "is Cyprus good" but "is this programme accredited" — check the CYQAA register before anything else.

  • IELTS: usually 5.5–6.0 at private universities; many accept a Medium of Instruction certificate or run their own online English test
  • Application or service fee of roughly EUR 350, on top of tuition
  • Two intakes — September (main) and January–February — so a missed deadline costs months, not a year

Funds: the type of document matters more than the number

  • About EUR 7,000 for one year, set by the university (EUR 5,000–7,000 in practice)
  • Shown through a bank letter plus statement — money you demonstrate, not money you lock
  • A repatriation bank guarantee on top — a sum your bank holds as assurance of your return travel; the university specifies amount and format
  • Sponsored by a parent or close relative? Add proof of relationship and their income documents, and avoid sudden deposits — the proof-of-funds guide covers what a convincing statement looks like

The document list

  • Passport with adequate validity (the university states its minimum)
  • HSC or Bachelor's certificates and transcripts, attested — see the attestation guide
  • IELTS, MOI certificate or the university's own test result
  • Bank letter, statement and repatriation guarantee
  • Medical tests — typically blood tests (HIV, hepatitis B and C, syphilis) and a chest X-ray for TB, from a recognised laboratory, certified
  • Police clearance certificate, obtained six to eight weeks before filing
  • Health insurance (roughly EUR 150–350 a year)
  • Photographs and the entry-permit/visa fee (about EUR 60–140)

The entry permit: the university applies for you

You do not queue at an embassy. The admissions office takes your complete file and submits the entry-permit application to the Civil Registry and Migration Department in Nicosia; some universities hold a short online interview first. Once approved, the visa is issued — from Dhaka, with no trip to India. Ask the university at application time exactly how you will receive it, since the channel is occasionally revised.

Processing usually takes four to eight weeks, longer in the July–August rush. For a September start, having your file in the university's hands by June is the safe line.

After you land: the pink slip

Three tasks in the first week:

  1. 1Report to the university and complete enrolment.
  2. 2Repeat the medical tests — Cyprus re-runs the same panel after arrival; the university arranges it.
  3. 3Register with the Migration Department and receive the temporary residence permit — the pink slip (about EUR 70, renewed each year). This, not the visa, is your legal right to stay.

Work, staying on and residence: the claims versus the rules

  • Work: none in the first semester (about six months). Then 20 hours a week in designated sectors, 38 in holidays, with the contract stamped by the labour office. "Work from day one" is a sales line, not a rule.
  • After graduation: Master's and PhD graduates can obtain a one-year job-search permit; Bachelor's graduates convert to a work permit through employer sponsorship.
  • Long-term residence: five years of continuous legal residence — but study years count at half weight, and A2 Greek plus stable income are required.
  • Schengen: the pink slip does not let you travel across Europe. Cyprus plans to join; there is no date.

The mistakes that cost people

  1. 1Enrolling in a cheap programme without checking accreditation — recognition problems surface years later.
  2. 2A bank guarantee in the wrong amount or format — the file comes back.
  3. 3Medical tests from an unrecognised laboratory.
  4. 4Police clearance obtained too early — it reads as stale by filing day.
  5. 5Arriving with the expectation of Schengen travel.

Common questions

Do I need to travel to Delhi for a Cyprus student visa?+

No. The Cyprus process is university-led: your university submits the entry-permit application to the Migration Department in Nicosia on your behalf, and the visa issuance step is completed from Dhaka. There is no Indian visa, no flight and no appointment queue in Delhi. Confirm the exact collection channel with your university's admissions office, because arrangements are occasionally revised.

Is the EUR 7,000 a blocked account?+

No — Cyprus has no blocked-account requirement. You evidence about one year of funds through a bank letter (solvency certificate) and a statement. The amount is set by the university rather than by law and runs EUR 5,000–7,000 in practice, so planning on EUR 7,000 is the safe assumption. Separately, a repatriation bank guarantee is required; the university tells you the amount and format.

What is the pink slip?+

The everyday name for the temporary residence permit you receive after registering with the Migration Department on arrival — around EUR 70, renewed annually. The visa only gets you into the country; the pink slip is your legal right to stay.

Can I travel around Europe on a Cyprus student permit?+

No. Cyprus is an EU member but not part of the Schengen area, so the national Category-D visa and the pink slip do not give you entry to Schengen countries. Cyprus intends to join Schengen but no date is fixed, and we do not sell a possibility as a certainty.
