Where Bangladeshi students apply for a Cyprus student visa, and why the university files first

Start with the thing everyone gets wrong

Cyprus is in the European Union. Cyprus is not in the Schengen area. Those are two different memberships and the difference decides your paperwork. A Schengen visa does not let you enter Cyprus as a student, and a Cyprus permit does not let you travel freely through Schengen. If a page or an agent uses "Schengen" and "Cyprus" interchangeably, that is a reliable sign they have not read the rules.

The same distinction runs the other way elsewhere: Ireland is in the EU and outside Schengen, while Norway and Switzerland are in Schengen and outside the EU. Bulgaria, another of our nine, joined Schengen fully on 1 January 2025 and adopted the euro on 1 January 2026.

The order of operations

Cyprus reverses the sequence students expect. You do not apply and then get accepted; the institution applies for you.

Cyprus's own Migration Department states the principle directly: a third-country national accepted by a recognised higher education institution may enter with an entry permit issued by the Civil Registry and Migration Department, provided that the application is submitted by the institution. Checked 9 September 2026.

What that means for you in practice

Your leverage is with the university, not with a consulate. Almost everything that goes wrong on a Cyprus file goes wrong in the institution's submission — a missing attestation, an unverified transcript, a bank document in the wrong form. So:

  • Ask the admissions office, in writing, for the exact document list they will submit and the date they intend to submit it.
  • Ask them to confirm where you will complete the consular step, and to put the office and city in the email. This is the question this article cannot answer for every institution, and it is the one that decides whether you travel.
  • Keep every attestation receipt. Cyprus accepts a Bangladeshi apostille, which shortens the chain; the order is in document attestation and apostille in Bangladesh.

What we could not confirm, and why we are saying so

Several commercial pages state that Cyprus applications from Bangladesh are lodged at a visa application centre in Dhaka and forwarded to New Delhi for issuance. We could not find that arrangement stated on any Cypriot government page, and the service provider's own Bangladesh section had no Cyprus page when checked on 9 September 2026.

What is documented is that the High Commission of the Republic of Cyprus in New Delhi is the mission accredited to Bangladesh. What is not documented, from Cyprus's side, is a Dhaka submission point. Treat the difference seriously: a wasted appointment at the wrong counter costs a day, but a plan built on a route that does not exist costs an intake. Get the institution to name the office.

The broader picture of which files leave Bangladesh is in the European countries with no embassy in Dhaka.

The rest of the Cyprus file

  • Funds and fees. Cyprus institutions are largely private and tuition is a real number rather than an income-assessed one. The country guide has the ranges, and the cost calculator puts them beside the other eight.
  • English. Many Cypriot programmes teach in English and set their own entry level, which is why Cyprus appears so often in searches about studying without IELTS. Verify the requirement with the institution rather than an agent.
  • Health cover as required for the permit.
  • Honesty about the north. Institutions in the northern part of the island are not in the Republic of Cyprus, are not covered by this process, and their qualifications are not recognised the same way. If a name you are offered does not appear on the Republic's list of recognised institutions, stop and check.

What happens after you arrive

The entry permit gets you in. The residence permit is a separate step taken in Cyprus, at a local immigration unit, usually within a set period after arrival and usually organised in part by the institution. It typically involves registration, a medical examination, and evidence that you are enrolled and insured.

Two things to know before you go. First, the medical requirement is real and it is done locally on arrival, so it is a cost and a diary item rather than a formality. Second, the permit is tied to your enrolment: if you stop attending, the basis for the permit stops with it. That is true across all nine, and it is stated here because Cyprus's institution-led process can make a student feel that immigration is somebody else's job. It is not.

Working, honestly

Cyprus does allow employment for students under conditions, in defined sectors and with a limit on hours, and the conditions are narrower than the internet suggests. The realistic planning rule is the same one that applies everywhere in this series: do not put first-semester earnings into the budget you show anyone, including yourself. A job may come; the tuition instalment will certainly come.

The honest summary

Cyprus is the least self-service of our nine: the university drives the immigration step and you supply the evidence. That makes choosing a properly recognised institution the single most important decision on this route, and it makes one written email — asking exactly where and when your consular step happens — worth more than any checklist.

Official sources — check for yourself

Rules and figures change. We review these articles periodically and show the date above, but always confirm the current requirement with the official source before you act on it.

Common questions

Is a Cyprus student visa a Schengen visa?+

No. Cyprus is an EU member state but is not in the Schengen area, so a Schengen visa does not admit you as a student and a Cyprus permit does not give free movement in Schengen. Any source that treats the two as the same has not read the rules.

Who submits the Cyprus entry permit application?+

The higher education institution does, on the student's behalf, to the Civil Registry and Migration Department. Cyprus's Migration Department states that a third-country national accepted by a recognised institution may enter with an entry permit issued by that department provided the institution submits the application.

Is there a Cyprus visa application centre in Dhaka?+

We could not confirm one from any Cypriot government source when we checked on 9 September 2026, and the service provider's Bangladesh section had no Cyprus page. What is documented is that the High Commission of Cyprus in New Delhi is accredited to Bangladesh. Ask your institution to confirm the exact submission office in writing before making travel plans.
