Studying nursing in Hungary from Bangladesh: what we can confirm, and what we cannot

The shortage is real. Europe's population is ageing, its health systems are short of nurses, and that is reported in Bangladesh often enough that families now treat nursing as a dependable way into Europe. We will not argue with the shortage. We will be careful about the door.

Here is the position before any detail. We could not confirm, from the evidence we hold, an English-taught nursing bachelor's degree in Hungary open to non-EU applicants. Our own cross-Europe nursing guide records Hungary's English-taught nursing provision as limited, and nothing in our Hungary material names such a programme, a university teaching one, an intake or a fee. We are not telling you none exists. We are telling you we will not say one does on evidence we do not have, and we would rather hand you the pages that settle it.

What we can confirm is a different subject, and that is exactly where this goes wrong. Medicine, dentistry and pharmacy are taught in English at the large Hungarian universities, with a real written and oral entrance examination in biology and chemistry taken in English, and so is veterinary medicine. Those faculties have run English-language programmes for decades and recruit hard in Bangladesh — Debrecen and Pecs are the names families already know. A reader who knows that reasonably assumes nursing works the same way. Different faculty, different rule book, different answer — and almost nobody says so out loud.

Three questions that get sold as one

Most of the damage here comes from treating these as one. They are three, decided by three bodies; clearing one tells you nothing about the next.

The questionWho decides itWhere Hungary stands on our evidence
1. Can you study nursing here? The universityNot confirmed in English. Check its own catalogue
2. Is your Bangladeshi qualification recognised? The authority holding the national nursing register — never a universityA decision about your file, not a property of your certificate
3. Can you practise as a nurse here? That same regulator, plus the language ruleHungarian, and registration

A university offer answers row one and nothing else.

Question one: can you study nursing in Hungary, in English?

Unconfirmed — and here is how to settle it yourself, rather than from any summary, ours included.

Open the university's own international admissions catalogue. Not an agency list. If a Hungarian university teaches a nursing bachelor's in English it will be there with entry requirements and a fee; if it is not there, it is not offered. Best universities in Hungary and the cheapest ones list where to start.

Search the Stipendium Hungaricum programme catalogue. It lists what the scholarship funds this cycle, by level, and is the cleanest place to see whether nursing appears at all.

Then ask the question almost nobody asks. Email the faculty and ask what language the clinical placements run in. A programme can be listed as English-taught and still put you on a ward where every patient speaks Hungarian — English-taught medical curricula in Bulgaria carry compulsory local-language teaching for that reason. Get it in writing: checking that a programme is really taught in English, then checking that an offer letter is genuine.

If an adviser names a Hungarian nursing programme, ask for the university's own page. That tests the adviser as much as the plan, and it is the same rule we apply to Hungary's student work hours.

Question two: is a Bangladeshi nursing qualification recognised in Hungary?

This is the question most readers are actually asking, and it is not a student question.

Recognition is a decision about your file, taken by the body holding the national register — never a property of your certificate, and never something a university can grant. A Hungarian university admitting you to a master's has decided you are academically prepared for that course. It has decided nothing about whether you may nurse a patient. Anyone who says a Bangladeshi BSc in Nursing is accepted in Hungary should be asked: by whom, and in which document.

We deliberately do not name a Hungarian office, because we have not verified which authority decides a third-country nursing qualification and will not invent one. Start at Study in Hungary and at the European Commission's page on recognition of professional qualifications, both linked below, and ask in writing which body holds the register and what it requires.

The answer then splits by what you actually want.

  • To study further. Your qualification is assessed as academic credit, so the usable question is ECTS. A Bangladeshi four-year honours degree, at roughly 240 ECTS, travels well; a three-year pass degree at roughly 180 is the problem case, usually fixed by adding a one-year Bangladeshi master's — three-year versus four-year bachelor's and master's in Hungary.
  • To work as a nurse. That is recognition of professional qualifications, assessed separately by each country's regulator, and it takes time. We publish no timeline, because no page we hold states one. Arriving as a student assuming the licence sorts itself out later is where this plan usually breaks.

Either way, collect course descriptions and syllabi before you leave: they are what an assessor reads, and far harder to get from abroad. Hungary accepts a Bangladeshi apostille, in force since 30 March 2025, so the paper chain is shorter here than for Denmark, Greece or Finland, which objected: attestation and apostille and who refuses it.

Question three: could you practise as a nurse in Hungary?

Only with Hungarian, and only with registration. Our cross-Europe guide records the language needed to work as a nurse in Hungary as Hungarian — the headline, not the footnote.

Nursing, pharmacy, medicine, dentistry, physiotherapy, school teaching, psychology and social work are regulated professions in every one of the nine countries we handle. The degree is the qualification; the register is the permission; different bodies grant them. A Bangladeshi nursing diploma does not let you work as a nurse in Hungary, and neither does a European nursing degree you have not finished.

Care-assistant work is not nursing. Healthcare-support roles may be open where nursing is not, but they are a different job, at a different rate, under a different permit, and any advert blurring the two is careless or dishonest. That conflation is how people here get exploited — read a student visa is not a work permit and student permit to work permit first.

Hungarian is genuinely hard, and unusually local. It is unrelated to the languages around it and offers a Bengali or English speaker almost no free cognates; daily-life Hungarian is a realistic first-year target, working-level conversation much later and only on purpose — how much Hungarian you really need. And note where English thins outside Budapest: shops, offices and healthcare, in exactly the cheaper university cities like Debrecen and Szeged. For a would-be nurse that is not a lifestyle note. It is the job.

We publish no CEFR level for nursing registration in Hungary; no page we hold states one. Ask the regulator, and keep the reply.

After graduation Hungary offers a nine-month job-seeking residence permit, applied for rather than automatic, and it does not convert itself into a work permit. Student years also do not count toward Hungary's three-year national residency calculation, and count at half for EU long-term residence and citizenship.

The money, from the published figures only

What it isThe figureWhat to watch
What a degree costsPublic tuition for a yearEUR 0 to 5,000Billed in forint, set per programme; the fee that matters is on the course page
What you must showFunds for the permitAbout EUR 6,000 a year, roughly HUF 200,000 a monthNo fixed amount is published; a sufficient-means test applies, and no blocked account
What you will spendLiving costsEUR 400 to 600 a monthHousing EUR 120 to 300, food EUR 120 to 200, transport EUR 15 to 35, other EUR 50 to 100
What the language costsHungarian, for the ward and the registerTime, not eurosThe largest item here, and the one nobody budgets for

Hungary bills in forint, so every euro figure above is a conversion that moves with the rate — a real exposure on a taka income. Before any of it comes the Bangladesh-side spend of roughly BDT 2 to 4 lakh, none refundable, computer-delivered IELTS at BDT 29,600 included. Our observed English range at Hungarian universities is IELTS 5.5 to 6.0 — our observation, not a national rule, because no Hungarian authority publishes a band: Hungary without IELTS, what Hungary costs, proof of funds, is education free in Hungary.

Hungary publishes no weekly work-hours figure, so neither do we. Term-time work is permitted on a student residence permit; how many hours is a question for the National Directorate-General for Aliens Policing, in writing, about your own permit. Budget with zero income — which student jobs actually pay.

Stipendium Hungaricum, and the part that is genuinely unresolved

This is a fair question, not a detail, because the scholarship drives the Hungarian year. It is a bilateral government programme with places allocated to Bangladesh, covering full tuition, a monthly stipend, an accommodation contribution and medical insurance. Applications close in January for a September start, and Bachelor's, Master's and PhD are all included.

Whether nursing is among the funded fields is what we will not answer from here. The available fields differ by level and change between cycles, so any field list printed in an article is stale the moment the next call opens. Search the current catalogue, at your level, for your cycle. The catalogue also carries a Hungarian language preparatory course as a non-degree option — the state itself treats language preparation as part of the offer. Read the Stipendium Hungaricum guide and why applications fail, and keep the universities' own scholarships as the parallel plan.

Who should not plan this

Not you, if you must apply in English for a nursing degree for the coming intake. We cannot confirm the route exists, and a plan whose first step is unconfirmed is not a plan. Malta is structurally different because English is official there — see the cross-Europe nursing guide, and Italy's nursing route for what a confirmed local-language route looks like.

Not you, if you hold a Bangladeshi nursing qualification and want to work rather than study. That is recognition, not admission.

Not you, if someone has offered you a nursing or caregiver placement in Hungary as a package. Nursing needs a register; care work is a different job; a study permit is not a work permit, and no consultancy converts one into the other.

Not you, if part-time earnings are load-bearing in your budget. Hungarian is close to a requirement for customer-facing work, there is no published hours figure to plan against, and the cheaper cities have the least English-language work.

Not you, if your real goal is healthcare rather than nursing specifically. Public health, pharmaceutical science and the laboratory routes admit on the record you hold, run in English and need no licence — the health routes that are not medicine. The same logic governs social work and psychology; dentistry and veterinary medicine are English-taught Hungarian routes that do exist.

What to do next, in order

  1. 1Decide which of the three questions is yours. If it is recognition, stop reading about admission.
  2. 2Open two Hungarian universities' own catalogues and search for nursing. Settle question one with a page, not an opinion.
  3. 3Search the current Stipendium Hungaricum catalogue at your level; note the January deadline.
  4. 4Email any faculty that does offer it and ask, in writing, what language the placements use.
  5. 5Ask the authority holding the nursing register what recognition requires for you — before you enrol, not in your final year.
  6. 6Read what Hungary is actually good for and entry requirements, with after HSC, intakes and the visa route for the mechanics.

Checked 21 September 2026. Programme availability, scholarship fields, language rules and registration rules are set by each university, by the scholarship administrator and by the national regulator, and change every cycle. Treat any page naming a Hungarian English-taught nursing degree without linking the university's own catalogue as unverified.

Common questions

Can I study nursing in Hungary in English?+

We could not confirm it. Our cross-Europe nursing guide records Hungary's English-taught nursing provision as limited, and nothing in our Hungary material names a university teaching a nursing bachelor's in English, an intake or a fee. That is not the same as saying no such programme exists anywhere in the country, and we will not say one does on evidence we do not have. Settle it with the university's own international admissions catalogue and with the Stipendium Hungaricum programme catalogue, both of which are current where an article is not.

Hungary teaches medicine in English, so surely nursing is taught in English too?+

That is the most reasonable wrong assumption on this page, and it is why the page exists. Medicine, dentistry, pharmacy and veterinary medicine are taught in English at the large Hungarian universities and have been for decades, with a written and oral entrance examination in biology and chemistry taken in English. Nursing is a different faculty under a different rule book, and the reputation of one does not carry to the other.

Will my Bangladeshi BSc in Nursing be accepted in Hungary?+

Recognition is a decision taken on your file by the body that holds the national nursing register, not a property of your certificate and not something a university can grant. Anyone who tells you it is accepted should be asked by whom, and in which document. We do not name a Hungarian office here because we have not verified which authority decides a third-country nursing qualification. Ask Study in Hungary in writing, and start from the European Commission's page on recognition of professional qualifications.

Can I work as a nurse in Hungary after an English-taught degree?+

Not on the degree alone. Nursing is a regulated profession in every one of the nine countries we handle: the degree is the qualification and the register is the permission, granted by different bodies. Our cross-Europe guide records the language needed to work as a nurse in Hungary as Hungarian. We publish no required CEFR level for Hungary, because no page we hold states one, and no registration timeline for the same reason.

Is nursing covered by Stipendium Hungaricum?+

The catalogue decides that, not us. Bachelor's, Master's and PhD programmes are all included in the scholarship, but the available fields differ by level and change between cycles, so any field list printed in an article is out of date as soon as the next call opens. Search the current programme catalogue for the subject, at the level you want, for the cycle you are applying to. Applications close in January for a September start.

Is a caregiver or care-assistant job in Hungary the same as nursing?+

No, and treating them as one is how people in this market get exploited. They are different jobs, at different rates, under different permits and different qualifications. Healthcare-support roles may be open where nursing is not, but no care-assistant post makes you a nurse, and a study permit is not a work permit in either case.

What does studying in Hungary actually cost?+

Public tuition runs EUR 0 to 5,000 a year and living costs EUR 400 to 600 a month, made up of housing EUR 120 to 300, food EUR 120 to 200, transport EUR 15 to 35 and other EUR 50 to 100. The residence permit is built on about EUR 6,000 a year, roughly HUF 200,000 a month, with no blocked account and no fixed published amount. Everything is billed in forint, so each euro figure is a conversion that moves with the rate.

How many hours a week can I work while studying in Hungary?+

Hungary publishes no weekly hours figure, so we do not print one either. Part-time work during term is permitted on a student residence permit; the limit that applies to you is a question for the National Directorate-General for Aliens Policing, asked in writing about your own permit. Build the first year with zero income from work, because no part-time job in Hungary pays for a degree.

What IELTS score do Hungarian universities want?+

Our observed range is 5.5 to 6.0, which is our observation from the programmes we see and not a national rule, because no Hungarian authority publishes a band. Universities tend not to waive the requirement so much as accept alternatives, such as an MOI letter, another certificate or their own interview. The programme page is the only authority for the programme you want.

Should I choose Hungary for nursing, or somewhere else?+

If you must apply in English for a nursing degree for the coming intake, start elsewhere: we cannot confirm the Hungarian route exists, and Malta's position is structurally different because English is an official language there. Hungary is worth the work if your target is one of the English-taught health routes that we can confirm, or if you intend to live in Hungary and are willing to treat Hungarian as a real project rather than a formality.
