Studying psychology in Europe: the degree, the licence and the gap between them

The regulation, stated plainly

In most European countries psychologist is a protected title. You cannot call yourself one, or work clinically, without being on a national register. Getting on that register is not a matter of holding a master's degree; the usual pattern across Europe is:

1. 1A university education in psychology of about five years total, at an accredited institution
2. 2One year or more of supervised professional practice
3. 3Registration with the national authority, which normally also assesses your language competence
4. 4In some countries, a further state examination or specialist training for clinical work

The European Federation of Psychologists' Associations runs EuroPsy, a certificate built on that same five-plus-one standard. EuroPsy is a quality standard and a mobility aid — it is not itself a licence, and each country's own register still decides.

⚠️ A one-year taught MSc in psychology does not make you a clinical psychologist anywhere in Europe. It is a real and useful degree. It is not a practising qualification, and this is the single most common misunderstanding in this subject.

Where English-taught psychology actually exists

The pattern is consistent and worth understanding: the clinical route in each country is taught in the national language, because clinical psychology is practised in the client's language. What is available in English is the academic and applied side — cognitive science, organisational psychology, health psychology, human-computer interaction.

That is not a lesser option. It is a different one, and it should be chosen deliberately.

What English-taught psychology leads to

• Organisational and work psychology — HR analytics, assessment, learning and development, in multinationals that operate in English
• User research and human-computer interaction — a genuinely strong, growing market, and the highest-paying exit for a psychology graduate in Europe
• Health and public-health psychology — research roles, often alongside a public-health department
• Research and a PhD — psychology is a research-heavy discipline with real doctoral funding in the Nordics
• Back in Bangladesh — counselling, NGO programme work, education and research roles

Entry requirements, honestly

• IELTS 6.0-6.5, higher for research-heavy master's programmes
• A statistics course on your transcript. Psychology in Europe is a quantitative science and the research-methods requirement filters out a lot of applicants
• A named research interest. Committees read motivation letters closely in this subject — see the SOP guide
• If your bachelor's is not in psychology, most master's programmes will refuse you outright; a small number offer conversion routes

Cost

Roughly EUR 0-5,000 a year in Italy and Hungary, EUR 3,500-11,000 in Cyprus and Malta, and EUR 6,000-16,000 in the Nordics, plus living costs of about EUR 400-1,200 a month depending on the country. Model it properly on the cost calculator before shortlisting.

What about practising in Bangladesh

Bangladesh does not operate a statutory register for psychologists in the way the Medical and Dental Council registers doctors, so what employers and hospitals actually assess is your degree, your supervised clinical hours and your supervisor's standing. That makes the supervised practice component of a European programme more important to you than the certificate on the wall. Ask any programme you are considering exactly how many supervised clinical hours it includes, and get the answer in writing.

Before you apply

1. 1Decide clinical or non-clinical. If clinical, accept that the national language is part of the price, in any of the nine.
2. 2If non-clinical, look at organisational psychology and human-computer interaction — that is where the English-taught provision and the jobs both are.
3. 3Check your transcript for statistics and research methods before you shortlist.
